He once ran into the Devil and convinced him to turn himself into a coin so he could buy a drink. Then he dropped the coin into a ocket next to a silver crucifix, rendering Satan powerless. another occasion Jack con- inced the Devil to climb an apple ree.

Why Satan fell for this after the coin trick I know. Once the Devil was up the tree, Jack carved a cross on the trunk so the Devil could not climb down without touching it. Eventually, Stingy Jack died and applied for admission at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter looked over the old record and decided he the type for Heaven.

Jack found himself at the ates of Hell. Satan, remembering he coin incident and the business of the apple tree, turned him away. Instead, Stingy Jack was doomed to wander the world at night, lighting his way with a candle in a hallowed out gourd or beet.
