Rochetter SUNLIGHT, WIND LOOKS LT'-J AFFECT HOMES When selecting a lot and developing a house plan, give due consideration to sunlight and prevailing breezes. The living room and bedrooms should be located so that they will have sunlight some part of the day, and the kitchen should be protected from the hot afternoon sun, if possible. It is desirable to have the bedrooms and kitchen so placed as to receive the benefits of the prevailing summer winds. This is especially true of dwellings in the South.

The landscape plan and the house plan be considered at the same time, and the garden and lawn treated as outdoor rooms. Advantage should be taken of natural features, such as a group of trees, or a particularly fine view, and the house and garden should be located to secure the greatest benefits from them. 4 Materials for Stock Cut Building Costs When moldings, kitchen cabinets, doors, and window sash are supplied from stock, they usually cost less than when made to special design. To keep the costs down, it is advisable to check with the contractor and see what items can be obtained from the local millwork company or, lumber dealer. LIGHT IMPROVEMENT Dark stairs can be improved by placing windows at the bottom, side, or top of stairways if the construction of the building permits.

Here's Key Question List To Help Select Home Site At first glance a building lot may appear to be an attractive place on which to build a home but all to often a casual inspection fails to reveal many hidden sources of worry and expense. tf4li 15. Is the lot well drained or is there danger of water standing on the surface during heavy rains. 16. Has the lot sufficient area to permit building of the house of desired size and still leave ample expanse for light, air, privacy, gar dens, and recreation grounds? 17.

Is there any danger of nearby improvements, such as industrial plants, being the source of objectionable smoke, fumes, odors, or noise? Wegman's Food Markets Inc. will open a new super food market at 815-817 Dewey near Driving Park Ave- nue, within the next few weeks. John F. XVEUMAX pieces of prop- in the rear, also have been purchased to be used as a free parking area. The parking lot will have two entrances, one from Finch Street and one from Driving Park Avenue. Alterations and modernization of the building will begin at once, Wegman said. It is hoped to open the new store early in October. Counters and display cases which will fill the large sales floor will be built of white porcelain, stainless steel, and glass with modern istic motifs used In the trim.

The front of the building will be white Vitrolite with black and chromium trim. Lighting fixtures will employ latest developments in commercial Illumination. "The need of a super-market of the Wegman type has long been felt in the Dewey-Driving Park section," Wegman aaid. "The new store is another step in the Weg' man program to serve all sections of Rochester with our type of super-market." From a small vegetable and fruit store, the Wegman stores have grown to seven, employing more than 500 Rochesterians. The first store was opened in 1917 at 72 Main St.

Months Gains $700,000 Rochester is on the way to a highly encouraging year of rest dential building. The seven-month valuation for work-and-materiate contracts was more than $700,000 ahead of the corresponding 1939 record.

Dodge Reports, the daily con struction news service, revealed that five of the first seven months had larger residential dollar totals than the same months of last year, in Rochester. The January-through-July period accumulated $2,766,000 in residential building contracts, throughout the Rochester metropolitan area, In cluding all Monroe County. A year ago the total was $2,019,000. In 1938, the total was $1,330,000. The contracts awarded during July were valued at $393,000.

That month of 1939 had a total of 000. The gain is rated at 8 per cent April had the highest residential building valuation of any 1940 month, Dodge Reports continues. March was second highest, followed by May. The lowest level of the seven months was touched in Janu- ary. The average costs of one-family houses are declining, according to an analysis of the 37 states east of the Rocky Mountains by Dodge Reports.

Houses built for the owners' occupancy and for sale or rent have increased in number and decreased in cost since 1937, with a consequent rise in the total money expended. The owner-to-occupy classification had an average house-cost of $6,050 during the first seven months of 1940. One year ago the average was at $6,160. The costs were higher in 1938 and 1937 as indicated by the averages of $6,730 and $7,360, respectively. The declining costs of houses built for the owners' occupancy have been paralleled by increased business in this important part of the building field.

The number of houses included In the contracts of the first seven months of this year in the 37-6tate area was 14 per cent greater than it was at the same point of 1939. The valuation of the contracts moved up 21 per cent. WET BASEMENTS CURED PERMANENTLY MADE BONE DRY BY MARVELOUS, NEW SEAL SEEP WATER PROOFING SYSTEM, APPLIED TO INNER SURFACE WRITTEN GUARANTEE. R. French i of the Roches ter Home Build ers Association There is a par ticular type of a rchltec ture suitable for the pe rso nality of leach family unit. The builder i 1 en ce the purchaser as HOMER J. KKE C'H to what is ad visahle not only for his present reeds, but also for future ones Each minute detail should be care fully worked out in the development of a fine home so that all the requirements of the family can be taken care of. Color alone cannot make or break a home, says French, but there should be an appeal to the eye of the pas6erby. After the color scheme has been selected for the outside, the purchaser should see that the tones on the inside carry out the basic exterior color program.

For example, if the exterior of the home is cream with blue trim, the interior trim and walls should vary from the lightest cream to a deep gold and the blues should vary in the same manner. Exposure of the house should be given due amount of thought. The lot that will satisfy one's own personal taste is the one to purchase. Remember that the view, sunlight, and shade are free; make the best u.e of any such "extras." Cool, Gay Tone Exposure of the room should govern the choice of the appropriate colors. Those on the southern and western sides should be kept in cool tones while warm, gay colors nhould prevail over rooms facing the east or north.

Lighting is a problem which must be skilfully handled, through the placement of plenty of windows in such an arrangement that cross ventilation of air is provided together with copious rays of sunlight. Avoid extremes in the placement of windows. Enough large wall-spaces should be provided so that furniture may be rearranged In a variety of ways. The living room should be spacious in its proportions and where the purchaser has a corner lot or a delightful view In the distance, the corner window is a new feature which will give an added perspective and flood the room with additional light. Dining rooms which face the southeast usually radiate good cheer because they receive sunlight during most of the day.

Here as In all other parts of the house the trim should be finished to a lustrous 'satiny" finish for the iake of appearance and as an aid in cleaning. A smooth finish docs r.ot collect dust as readily as a rough one, and requires far less elbow-grease when It docs become dusty. I'ses for a Study French believes that every home Fhould have a study, if it can possibly be afforded. Such a room can serve many purposes. It can be the home-office of the man cf the house or the children can find solitude there where they can study their homework.

Then, too, this "handy may serve as a bedroom when unexpected guests arrive. A studio couch is advisable for the latter purpose. The kitchen belongs to the lady of the house and should be planned to meet her needs. It should be large, livable and provided with a number of shelves and cupboards. Every appliance and piece of equipment ehould spell convent erre.

There are two general types of homes: contract and speculative. French has found that the people who have positive Ideas on homes are the ones who should build homes by contract. For the others who find blueprints and rough sketches a nuize of puzzling Une3, it is better to search for speculative and model homes until they eventually find the home of their dreams. 4 Surveys Advised On Appliance Outlets Prospective home owners should rot take it for granted that their rew homes will have proper elec tric lighting and sufficient con venience outlets for the Use of appliances.
