Anderson, a professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a counselor on medical education ly, died of cancer Sunday at the Car- ol Woods retire- I ment community in Chapel Hill, N.C. He was 82. Dr. Anderson was dean of the medical school and director of the UR Anderson Medical Center 1953 to 1966.

He remained with the university until his retirement in 1978. The UR medical school's current dean, Dr. Marshall Lichtman, joined the faculty in 1966 just as Dr. Anderson stepped down as dean i and was elected president of the national Fund for Medical Educa-. tion.

"He was an outstanding person and a fine dean, and the school really thrived under his leadership," Lichtman said. After the robbery, a man was seen running from the bank into the parking lot of the mall, said the Ontario County Sheriffs Department The man was later observed re-entering the mall at another entrance. Sheriffs deputies, state police and FBI agents set up road blocks at all mall exits and searched the parking lot and the mall. Cherokee leader receiving Geneva colleges' honor GENEVA Hobart and William Smith Colleges will present their distinguished Elizabeth Black-well Award to Wilma Mankiller, the first woman elected to lead a major American Indian nation. Mankiller will be the 30th recipient of the award, which was first given in 1958. The award is given to women whose lives exemplify outstanding service to humankind.

It is named for Blackwell, the first woman in the United States to receive a doctorate in medicine. Blackwell graduated from the Geneva Medical College, now Hobart College, in 1849. As leader of the Cherokee Nation, Mankiller increased tribal rev Expel FROM PAGE IB Last month, school officials and the Lamies mutually agreed that Chelsie needed some time away from school to recover. Notre Dame granted the teen-ager a leave of absence until the end of January, Colleen Lamie said. But, according to Chelsie Lamie, when she dropped by Notre Dame to pick up some of her belongings, the principal and assistant principal took her aside.

Ferrando wanted to talk about Lamie's letter, which appeared in The Daily News of Bata-via a few days earner, said Lamie. "Mr. Ferrando said he was not happy with my letter. He said he wanted students to be walking in pro-life rallies with Lamie said. She said the principal also questioned her involvement with AIDS education.

Lamie had attended local seminars on AIDS and planned to enroll in a community class to become an AIDS educator. She hoped to travel to local schools and colleges, where she would answer questions about AIDS and distrib- ute condoms. Lamie had recently picked up 200 condoms in anticipation of those lectures. About one week after that conversation, Ferrando called the girl -and her mother into his office. in of a a medical school, said Dr.

Anderson pushed the medical school toward more research. "He catapulted the medical school into the front ranks of the very good research medical schools the country," Joynt said. "He responded with the creation new things in the curriculum and new approaches in clinical care." Dr. Anderson was born in New York City. He received his medical degree with high honors from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1939.

After a residency in pathology and medicine and staff positions in hospitals in New York and Boston, he held faculty posts at the Columbia and Boston University medical schools. Dr. Anderson became involved in the distribution of penicillin nationwide. In 1945, at the age of 32, he was appointed dean of the Boston University Medical School, making him one of the youngest men to hold such a position. Over the years, Dr.

Anderson was member of the President's Science enue and services and developed a comprehensive health care system for tribal members. robbery in January 1993. Arguments will be heard in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan. The Melkite-rite priest is serving 51-month prison sentence in connection with the $7.4 million heist at Brink's depot, 370 South Ave. He was convicted in November 1994 of conspiracy to possess stolen cash.

Also convicted of the same charge was Samuel Ignatius Millar, an ex-rebel from Northern Ireland. Millar was sentenced to five years in prison and is not appealing. Troopers keeping special watch for drunken driving State police will make an extra effort to enforce highway laws this weekend as part of a national drive against hazards caused by impaired and intoxicated drivers. The troopers kick off National Holiday Lifesaver Weekend tomorrow by keeping their headlights on all day. "Lights On For Life" is a commemoration of people who are killed and injured in alcohol- and drug-related crashes each year.

Motorists are encouraged to show their support of the enforcement effort by keeping their headlights on, too. Correction A report on Page IB of yesterday's Democrat and Chronicle was incorrect The Rev. Thomas Dubbs, pastor of Cottage City United Church, gave the eulogy at the funeral of Cassandra, Louis and Douglas Mastin. "He said, 'Her views are not the same as Notre and he didn't see how it would be good for the school or her to continue there," Colleen Lamie said. Ferrando said he "indicated that this wasn't working, that it would be best that she not be here." But he denied that the teenager's views on abortion or her goal to become an AIDS educator was the reason.

"We have a diverse population and we support that," he said, adding that "we don't go around asking" students their views on topics such as abortion. As for AIDS, Ferrando said that Notre Dame "absolutely" provides information to students about AIDS. "I don't know what to say about that I honestly don't know what that is all about," he said, referring to Lamie's charge that her interest in becoming an AIDS educator ran contrary to the school's philosophy. Notre Dame students questioned about Lamie's dismissal said they don't know what to think. "Maybe if I had more information, I could form an opinion," said Annemarie Volpe.

Mahoney said the CLU will continue to investigate whether legal action against the school is possible. And Colleen Lamie said her daughter won't give up. "She is a tough cookie," Lamie said. "I think Notre Dame underestimated her."
