The elated old nobleman suddenly dies. Still Hugh shows no love for her, and she turns to an old friend of his, the Earl of Carstairs (Knowles). Then Hugh has a sudden change of heart, declares, unconvincingly, that he does, love her and takes a high-handed course to win her. Miss Goddard gives a skillful, glittering performance as Kitty, and takes rank with the top actresses. She is facile, resourceful, expert in shading and effective in both humor and drama.

Hugh doesn't give Milland big range, but he makes the fellow honestly contemptible. Miss Collier's Lady Susan is a gem of a character sketch, and Kellaway's Gainsborough is delightfully done. Knowles strikes the right notes as Lord Carstirs, and He jy's Selby is ably done. Owen is natheticallv and ironically comic in heir-birth sequence. A student of Arthur Kraft, she is a candidate for her performer's certificate and the degree Master of Music in Music Literature. Gratefully, there is not the slightest sign of wobble in her singing. Everything was voiced steadily and well focussed, there was no faltering in intonation and her breath support and control were evident.

Her program was varied and admirably short, too, opening-with Aire's "By Dimpled Brook." Cesti's del ben che acquistero (II Porno D'Oro)" sung with the quality of long vocal line, was followed by Zelter'a "Rastlose Liebe" and "Wandrers Nachtlied." Miss Schwendeman's feeling for the dramatic was shown in Schubert's "Der Erlkonig" and in the aria "Dich Teure Halle" from Wagper's "Tannhauser." The aria came off quite brilliantly, with broad, full top tones, showing ample breath support from the diaphragm. In fact, it was almost heroic singing. She has a sympathetic quality too, a natural sounding voice, with mezzo voce quite delightful. Her other numbers were Gaubert's "Quatre Ballades Francaises," Bax's "Eternity," Barber's "I Hear an Army," Barlow's "Communion and Carpenter's "Light, My Light." In the matter of diction, considerable cleaning up could be done, for this was the variable quantity. Jane Stull provided highly acceptable accompaniments.

But why should itt as entertainment today? One must acknowledge that it is done with a deal of cleverness; in fact, it is notably strong in satire and irony, and it is acted up to the hilt by Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Patric- Knowles, Cecil Kellaway, Reginald Owen, Constance Collier, Dennis Hoey and others who turn in admirable sketches.

The thing is likely to tickle the palate of the sophisticated, but it is unsavory, and It has no redeeming moral aspect. Too, it ends weakly, unconvinc-ingly. At the, finish it is disappointing that as thorough-going a heel as the screen has presented should have his way and win to romance. The picture borrowed its basic idea from Shaw's "Pygmalion," and though the theme is not developed so clearly and? adroitly as it was in that play, it nevertheless is handled with a deal of humorous and ironical effectiveness. It is bscd on a novel by Rosamond Marshall, and the veteran Mitchell Leisen directed with his familiar skill and sense of pungent humor.

Kitty (Miss Goddard) 'is a London guttersnipe of the time, to put it charitably. When she tries to steal the silver shoe buckles of Thomas Gainsborough, the noted painter, he perceives beauty in her dirty face and dress. He induces her to pose for him, and the resulting painting Is called "An Anonymous Lady." It reveals her beauty strikingly, and at an exhibition it creates a stir, despite the flaw-picking of Sir Joshua Reynolds, a jealous rival painter. Old and amorous Duke of Mal-munster (Owen) is delighted by it and demands an introduction to the lady. Gainsborough says that he cannot reveal her identity, but Sir Hugh Marcy (MillandJ, who saw her posing, devises a fanciful tale for the Duke, telling him that Kitty is his aunt's niece and ward, and now is traveling.

He agrees to in troduce her to the Duke when she returns. His purpose is to ret money and to regain the place in the Foreign Office from which he has been ousted. Hugh is a cheap bounder. He takes charge of Kitty, and with the aid of his tippling aunt, Lady Susan (Miss Collier), trains her to act like a lady. She comes to love him, but he resolves to exploit her charms selfishly by marrying her to the old puke.

He's chucked into a debtors prison. Kitty marries ai rich, middle-aged iron magnate, Selby, to get money to free Hugh. She breaks into Selby's strong box to get funds, and when he f-ebukes her, a peVvnnt she has befriended kills him, and herself. Widowed and rich as she is, Hugh now plans to marry her to the Duke. She does become the duchess, and bears him a phony It's Friday Again!
