Dear Heloise: When my daughter was home, she was the one selected to make potato salad for a crowd of about 100 people.

She has long fingernails and, therefore, was puncturing the tips of Jier rubber or plastic gloves. I told her to put a small cotton in the tip of each finger of her gloves. SPORTS MEDICINE Caffeine no help in exercise Dear Dr. Donohue: I've got a running buddy who downs a cup of extra-strong coffee before a run. He says it makes his heart rate go up before exercise to maximize aerobic benefits.

Does this sound like a good idea to you? J. in C.S. Dear Your friend's theory of a benefit from caffeine-induced acceleration of heart rate is one I cannot buy. The heart beats faster from caffeine stimulation, not from the demands of exercising muscle. That caffeine-induced rise in heart rate does not enhance aerobic benefits.

The entire caffeine story in sports is one charged with strong feelings by caffeine aficionados and caffeine abstainers. On the plus side, caffeine releases fatty acids. The body uses them as a source of energy. That conserves muscle glycogen and reputedly increases endurance. A cup of coffee does not bestow resounding benefits.

If your friend feels it does, fine. He's probably profiting from a placebo effect. DR. PAUL DONOHUE North America Syndicate Dear Dr. Donohue: My doctor thinks I might have fi- bromyalgia.

I'm pooped all the time. My body aches from head to toe. I can't fall asleep at night. The doctor suggested I exercise. Now, I ask you, how can I exercise when I can barely crawl around? M.R.

Dear M.R.: For a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, a person must suffer from widespread muscle pain that lasts for three months without finding any other cause for the pain. Secondly, a person must have so-called "tender points" 18 body sites where moderate finger pressure elicits a yelp of pain. Doctors have charts that show the locations of the tender points. As farfetched as it may sound, exercise is an essential part of a treatment program. Naturally a fibromyalgia patient shuns exercise.

Body pain encourages rest. But rest deconditions the body and worsens fibromyalgia. Your doctor doesn't want you to run a marathon tomorrow. Start out gradually. A beginning target might be walking one block, for example.

Slowly increase the distance until you're walking 30 minutes four times a week. Results can be surprising. The body feels better because it's becoming reconditioned. Exercise often restores refreshing sleep, something a fibromyalgia patient desperately needs. The brain pours out a supply of endorphins, which assuage pain and induce a euphoric state.

Dear Dr. Donohue: When I run or climb stairs, my knees make popping noises. Is something terrible happening to my knees? The noise attracts a good deal of attention. S.K. Dear S.K.: Painless popping noises almost never indicate serious problems.

Irregular joint surfaces rubbing against each other, pressure changes in a joint or ligaments gliding over bones produce the popping symphony. If there is pain along with the popping sounds, then your doctor should have a look at your joints. Dear Dr. Donohue: I have a bodybuilding 'boyfriend who spends hours at the gym. He looks great, but you can see large veins on his arms and legs.

Does that mean anything serious? M.E.D. Dear M.E.D.: It goes with the territory. When a person lifts weights, veins become engorged with blood. Spending long hours in the gym all but guarantees vein enlargement. It's nothing to worry about.
