At San Francisco, Cleveland Gary scored three touchdowns to help the Rams prevent the two-time defending Super Bowl champion 49ers from what would have been an NFL record 19th straight victory. "When you give the ball up a lot, that's the kind of thing you can't do against a team like the Rams," 49ers quarterback Joe Montana said after throwing three interceptions. "No matter what their record." The Rams, 4-7, forced four first-half turnovers to race to a 21-7 halftime lead, and then survived a 10-point San Francisco third quarter. Montana threw a 23-yard TO pass to Harry Sydney on a screen pass and Mike Cofer added a 42-yard field goal but Gary capped a 90-play drive that took 10:37 with a 1-yard run to put the Rams safely in front Buford McGee ran for a TO and threw a 22-yard halfback option pass to Gary for another to help the Rams to their halftime lead. The 49ers would have clinched their fifth straight division title with a triumph.

After an exchange of 3-point shots, however, the Gamecock defense turned stingy again, forcing a combination of bad Scawolf shots and turnovers that iced the win for them. Guards Barry Manning and Jo Jo English, both 6-4 juniors, led South Carolina scoring with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Forward Joe Rhett, a 6-8 junior, pulled down 13 rebounds as well as tossing in 11 points. Alaska-Anchorage was paced by 6-4 junior forward Jackie Johnson, who had 11 points along with a team-high seven rebounds. So says Penguins orthopedic specialist Charles Burke. Burke said Sunday that Lemieux is essentially pain-free. But the doctor says Lemieux still needs "a lot of time for the healing to go on." "The worst thing would be to bring him back too early and have his pain come back," Burke said.

"Then we'd be right back where we were before." Burke said Lemieux still is working on a three-month time frame and Dec. 19 is three months. The two-time National Hockey League scoring champion underwent surgery July 11 to repair a damaged back disc. In late September, doctors said he also had a disc-space infection. Lemieux has not played a game since last March 31.

"It's nice to break into the secondary. I hadn't done it for so long. It's the first time I went deep this year." The fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns, once an annual participant in the Cotton Bowl, clinched their first trip to Dallas in seven years Saturday with a 23-13 victory over No. 25 Baylor.

"Early in the season, I didn't expect us to go this far," said Texas quarterback Peter Gardere, who passed for 127 yards and a touchdown in leading the Longhorns to their first Southwest Conference title since 'I'm glad to be here, though it's a lot of fun." Butch Hadnot also ran 19 yards for a touchdown and Pollak kicked three field goals for Texas, 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the WC with one regular-season game remaining next week against Texas The Longhorns trailed 10-0 after the first quarter before using a 17-point third period to win at Baylor for the first time since 1982. 1 'We showed we can come back after being down 10-0," Texas Coach David McWilliams said. "The defense had played well, and I think we got some momentum when Michael Pollak kicked that 56-yard field goal at the close of the first half. That gave us a real boost." McWilliams agreed to a five-year contract extension after the game. His job was believed to be in jeopardy before the season after the Longhorns suffered consecutive losing seasons for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Longhorns were held to minus-6 yards rushing in the first half but recovered in the third quarter. Chris Samuels ran 28 yards to the Baylor 32, and three plays later Gardere found Keith Cash behind a fallen Charles Bell for a 31-yard touchdown pass. "We changed some pass protection blocking schemes at the half and they worked real well in the third quarter," Gardere said. The Bears grabbed a 10-0 first quarter lead on a 15-yard run by Robert Strait and a 19-yard field goal by Jeff Ireland. "We do this every week (fall behind)," Cash said.

"We knew we'd get in there eventually." After the game, Baylor Coach Grant Teaff promoted the Longhorns for the national championship. 'I've voted for them No. 1 two times and I did that with honest feelings," Teaff said. "I take my vote very seriously. I'll do it again this week.

I want them to win the national championship." Baylor finished its season 6-4-1 and will stay home for the holidays, after Teaff turned down an ultimatum from the Independence bowl earlier in the week. Blazers Struggle Past Spurs After Blistering Start It's nearly impossible to achieve absolute perfection in a basketball game, but the Portland Trail Blazers came pretty close in the first quarter of Sunday night's game against the San Antonio Spurs. After seeing the Blazers outscore his team 49-18 in the opening period, San Antonio coach Larry Brown said Portland could have beaten an all-decade team.

But one quarter hardly makes a game, and Portland had to struggle over the remaining three quarters to pull out a 117-103 victory. "That was an awesome first period by Portland," Brown said. "I've never seen anybody have a quarter like that. "But then when I looked up at halftime on the Scoreboard and saw that we were only 14 points down, I thought il was a message from God." The Blazers are now 11-0 and arc the only undefeated team in the NBA. They have won 15 regular season games in a row dating back to last season.

Portland was paced by three players with 20 or more points. Center Kevin Duckworth led the way with 22 points while Terry Porter had 21 and Clyde Drexler added 20. San Antonio's David Robinson led all scorers with 26 points. Without question, the difference in the game was the first quarter. It was even more impressive that the effort came against a team as good as the Spurs, who saw their season record drop to 7-3.

Portland dominated in every aspect of the game in that period. They hit 88 percent of their field goal attempts (22-of-25), and all five of their 3-point attempts on the way to a team-record 49 points. In the process, Portland also limited the Spurs to 18 points, which was the number of points the Blazers scored in the period off San Antonio turnovers. The Blazers were able to extend their lead-almost every trip down the floor in that quarter, and finally pushed their advantage to 31 when Cliff Robinson hit a 3-pointer with five seconds left The period also featured 10 assists by Porter, which is a team record for a quarter; and 15 points and four blocked shots by Drexler. Porter finished with 16 assists and Drexler had 14 rebounds in the game.

"I've never seen any team play a better first quarter in my life," said David Robinson. "If they're doing that against other people, it's going to be a- scary season for the rest of us." Elsewhere in the NBA Sunday night, Detroit overpowered Sacramento 105-92, Houston thumped Minnesota 107-91 and the LA Clippers routed Orlando 119-91. Pistons 105, Kings 92 At Auburn Hills, James Edwards scored a season-high 26 points and Mark Aguirre added 17 to help the Pistons extend their winning streak to seven games. The triumph enabled the Pistons, 10-2, to tie the club's best start in history. Detroit, which had six players in double figures, won 10 of its firs? 12 games in the 1988-89 season.

The Kings dropped their third consecutive game. Rockets 107, Timberwolves 91 At Minneapolis, Akeem Olajuwon scored 27 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and blocked four shots to lead the Rockets. Houston snapped a two-game losing streak in winning their first game in Minneapolis after going 0-2 in 1989-90. It was only the Rockets second win in seven road games this season. Clippers 119, Magic 91 At Los Angeles, Charles Smith scored 21 points and Benoit Benjamin added 18 and grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds to lead the Clippers, who have won three of their last four games.

Terry CaOedge led Orlando with 16 points and Sam Vincent added 14 to pace the Magic, 3-10, which suffered its fourth straight loss..
