(T Notre Dame Balk On Top In UPI Pall THE DAILY NEW Dame, Coming off a victory that left its'coach more worried than satisfied, nonethe- tess returned to the No. 1. position Sunday in the United Press International college football ratings. 4. The Fighting Irish, who had occupied the No.

1 position for four weeks earlier this season before losing to Stanford, outpointed Washington as the ratings underwent a major shakeup after four of the top six teams last week were upset. Notre Dame received 38 of 58 first-, place votes cast by the 59-member UPI Board of Coaches and finished with 828 of a possible 870 points, the largest point total by any team this season. Washington received 18 first-place votes and 805 points, while No. 3 Colorado was at the top of two ballots and earned 697 points. Notre Dame, 7-1, ascended two positions to the top spot on the heels of its 52-31 victory 'over Navy, a win in which the Fighting Irish scored 21 third-quarter points to pull away from a 10-10 tie at halftime.

But the runaway victory left Coach Lou Holtz stewing over the state of his defense heading into a stretch run that finds the Fighting Irish finishing against Tennessee, Perm State and Southern Cal. "We cannot be a great football team unless we play great defense," Holtz said. "To score 52 points and not be ablc to play your second team is an for Notre Dame." Washington, 8-1, rose three positions after it clinched a Rose Bowl berth "by hammering Arizona 54-10. The Huskies are 6-0 in the Pacific-10 and have outscored league Toes 263-64. i- "Our guys have played just so much better than I ever thought we could," 'Washington Coach Don James said.

"We just took five real good teams 'apart. I'm amazed with the scores -we've posted." Since suffering their lone loss to Colorado, Washington has posted wins of 38-17 over Oregon, 52-16 over Startr lord, 46-7 California and 54-10 bver Arizona. The Vulcans scored four times in the first quarter and cruised home from there to improve their record to 4-4-1, a whopping 634 total yards on 'offense, 429 rushing.

Hoover racked up 147 yards rushing km 12 carries and scored twice on runs of three and 77 yards while Meier shredded the Bald Eagles for 205 yards "on 16 carries and scored TDs on 62 and 19 yard blasts. LHU, who fell to 1-9, scored on a pass from Jim Broadway to Hol- freshman Dave Wyland, a 'successful PAT, and a safety for its points. James said. "We've had sand kicked in our face over the last few years, but now oup guys have experience." Colorado, 8-1-1, moved up four places after its 28-12 over Nebraska, in which the Buffaloes held Nebraska without a first down in the fourth quarter Eric Bieniemy scored four touchdowns in the period. 7 Georgia Tech jumped seven places after knocking off previously top-rated Virginia 41-38 on a Scott Sisson field goal with seven seconds left. No. 8 Tennessee moved up two spots, while No. 9 Virginia and No. 10 Nebraska both dropped eight positions.

The Steelers, featuring outstanding defense, handed the Falcons a 21-9 setback. Rutledge Rallies Skins Past Lions In Overtime Clippers Win On Field Goal As Time Expires i LOS ANGELES (UPI) Ken Norman hit an 18-foot turnaround jumper as time expired Sunday night, rallying Los Angeles Clippers to a victory over the Golden State Warriors. Chris Mullin, who led the Warriors with 26 points, tied the score 107-107 with an 18-foot jumper with 32.6 seconds left. Norman, who led the Clippers with 26 points, then sealed the outcome with his game-winning shot.

"That's a shot I feel really comfortable with," said Norman of his game- winning shot. "I gave him (Warriors forward Tom Tolbert) a pump fake, he didn't go for it. Then I felt I could go over him. I had a clear shot, but it was a tough shot 1 Gary Grant added 18 for the Clippers, which rallied from a 34-16 first- quarter deficit. Tim Hardaway contributed 18 and Milt Richmond had 16 for the Warriors, Mullin's two free throws with 1:35 left in the game gave the Warriors their last lead, 105-104.

When Tolbert was called for an illegal defense, Bo Kimble made the free throw to lie the score 105-105 with 1:04 to play. Norman then hit a turnaround jumper to give the Clippers a 107-105 lead with 48.1 seconds left. "I think if one thing has been established, it's that the Los Angeles Clippers will not give up," Clippers Coach Mke Schuler said. "I always told the team at every opportunity, that we could win the game. r.

"I looked in their eyes at timeouts, I 'knew that they were really in-tuned with what we were doing. I know I had their full attention." Golden State went in front 28-9 with 3:18 to play in the first quarter, with Mullin scoring 13 points in the run. The Clippers rallied to within 58-47 with 1:01 to play in the half on a pair of Jeff Martin free throws. But the Warriors scored the final five points of the half and led 63-47 at halftime. By DAVE RAFFO UPI Sports Writer On a day when six games were lopsided, Jeff Rutledge lifted the Washington Redskins to the biggest comeback in the NFL this season.

Rutledge came off the bench to replace Stan Humphries with the Redskins trailing 35-14 early in the third quarter. He completed 30 of 42 passes for 363 yards and a touchdown, ran 12 yards to a TD that sent the game into overtime and led Washington into position for Chip Lohmiller's 34-yard overtime field goal. Lohmiller's field goal gave the Redskins a 41-38 road victory over the Detroit Lions. "It's something I'll always look back on if I never play another game," said Rutledge, who played hi only one game each of the last two seasons while with the New York Giants. "To be able to come to Washington (as a Plan free agent) and get the chance to play is a dream come true.

I didn't know if I'd ever get to play I may never get to play again, but you can't take away today," said the 13-year veteran from Alabama. "I told my wife earlier in the week I thought I was going to get a chance to play. I don't know why. I just had a gut feeling. Maybe it was wishful thinking." Rutledge led Washington to 12th straight victory over the Lions and kept the Redskins, 5-3, in the NFC wild-card race lead.

He also won a starting job. "I think I'd be hung from something if I didn't start Jeff next week," Redskins' Coach Joe Gibbs said. Rutledge led Washington on five scoring drives. He hit Gary Clark on a 34-yard strike in the fourth quarter before scoring on a quarterback draw with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter. There were another half dozen teams that could have used Rutledge-like heroics, although even he likely could not help Cleveland Sunday.

The Browns were trounced 42-0 by Buffalo, suffering their worst home loss ever and worst beating anywhere in 21 UPI Ratings years. Thurman Thomas scored three TDs and Darryl Talley returned his second interception 60 yards for another TD to lift Buffalo, 7-1, to its sixth straight victory. The Browns, 2-7, lost their fourth straight and added fuel to speculation coach Bud Carson will be fired soon. Even Carson said he feared the end was near. "Absolutely," he said when-asked if he was worried about his job.

"I've got to go home and think about it myself. To be honest with you, the last thing I want to do is be part of a football team that can't win. If I'm that part of it, then I'll know it and I'll step away from it." Five other games Sunday were decided by 15 or more points. Miami slammed Phoenix 23-3, Chicago slapped Tampa Bay 26-6, Philadelphia bombed New England 48-20, San Diego trounced Seattle and the NY Jets ripped Dallas 24-9. On'Monday night, Indianapolis is home against the New York Giants.

MURPHY UPI Sports Writer The Los Angeles Kings traded a first- round draft pick to obtain Daniel Berthiaume. Sunday night, the goaltender proved there was some merit to the exchange. Berthiaume stopped all 40 shots Sunday night and Luc Robitaille snapped a scoreless tie early in the second period, leading Los Angeles to a 2-0 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks. "Berthiaume stood on his head tonight," said Blackhawks' winger Steve Thomas, robbed by the 24-year- old goaltender on numerous occasions. Chicago, which snapped its three- game winning streak, outshot the Kings 40-24 overall and 14-2 in the final period.

Berthiaume recorded his fifth career shutout and first since early last season when he was with Winnipeg. Berthiaume improved his record to 6-1 on the season, his first victory with Los Angeles since being acquired from Minnesota Sept. 6. "He played extremely well, but I felt both goaltenders had an outstanding game," Kings' Coach Tom Webster said. "We gave up a first- round draft pick for him.

He came into training camp very determined, and tonight he certainty put on another tremendous performance." Steve Kasper added an empty-net goal with one second left "When you have no goals against and 40 shots, it has to be one of your best games," Berthiaume said. "But I think it was one of the biggest wins for the team so far this season. 1 After a thrilling but scoreless first period, the Kings connected for the game's first goal on the power play at 6:44 of the second. Los Angeles failed to score with a two-man advantage, but Robitaille finally broke through with defenseman Chris Chelios still in the penalty box for cross-checking. Todd Elik dished a perfect feed in front that Robitaille buried past Bef- lour's glove side for his eighth tally of the season.

Wayne Gretzky got the other assist 'That's the kind of play we practice every day," Robitaille said. "I probably take 1,000 shots every day, and I take about 500 like that. I just had to walk in and bury it in the comer." "Berthiaume played a great game, and he got a couple breaks," said Chicago goalie Ed Belfour, equally brilliant for Chicago before a sellout crowd of 18,472. Facing Gretzky for the first time in his career, he stopped the Great One on a breakaway midway through the first period. Gretzky picked off a pass at center ice, moved in alone and tried to beat Belfour with a backhander, but the rookie slid to his left and blocked the shot with his pads.

Facing Belfour, the NHL's leading goaltender in wins and goals- against average, Berthiaume knew he would have to be at his best "I thought if we could put a couple in, maybe he would get shaky," Berthiaume said. "But he was awesome and made some really good saves. I closed the door on my side, and that's all I can say." Webster complimented Gretzky on his defense. 'He was committed," Webster said. "He came back, worked down low with the defensemen in some unknown territory that he hasn't been before.

It was tremendous." Elsewhere in the NHL, Buffalo beat Calgary 2-1, Minnesota and Montreal tied 2-2 and Philadelphia blasted Toronto 7-1. Sabres 2, Flames 1 At Buffalo, N.Y., Dave Snuggerud's goal early in the second period broke a 1-1 tie and Clint Malarchuk stopped 34 shots to help the Sabres remain undefeated in their last five games. Calgary, which outshot Buffalo 35-21, had their five-game victory streak snapped. North Stars 2, Canadiens 2, OT At Montreal, Andrew Cassels scored his first goal of the season at 12:54 of third period to lift the Canadiens to the tie with Minnesota. Cassels took a pass from Mathieu Schneider at the blue line, skated in and fired a high shot past goalie Jon Casey.

Flyers 7, Leafs 1 At Toronto, Scott MelUnby had two goals and an assist and Tim Kerr set up three goals, powering Philadelphia..
