Page 4 THE DAILY HERALD, Tyrone, Monday, October 29, 1990 McCartney, Blue Devils Swat Green Hornets 32-6 By BOB MILLER Herald Sports Correspondent ALEXANDRIA Juniato Valley tried to get in a. little early Halloween trick or treating Saturday afternoon, but Bellwood-Antis refused to let a slow start hurt themselves. The Blue Devils controlled the second half for a 32-6 victory, boosting their record to 7-2. With a quarter-and-a-half played, the Blue Devils were surprisingly locked in a 6-6 tie after Juniata Valley had driven for an 18-play drive that resulted in a game-tying touchdown. That was to be the only scoring threat the Blue Devil defense would allow the Hornets all afternoon, however, while Bellwood- Antis was rushing for 302 yards on the ground and four more TDs.

Bellwood-Antis took advantage of a Hornet fumble which B-A lineman Gerald Whi taker pounced on to give the Blue Devils the pigskin at the JV 21 yard line early in the opening quarter. Senior quarterback Jason Commesser hooked up with slotback Bo Lardieri behind the Hornet secondary for a 17 yard touchdown heave and a 6-0 Blue Devil lead with four and a half minutes to play in the first quarter. Juniata Valley then took seven minutes off the clock to run a long drive of their own for the tying TD. Junior quarterback Jason Anders capped the march with a six yard blast for the score on a second effort after it seemed the B-A defense had him stopped at about the two yard line. Homel running backs Buddy Claar and Adrian Galloway took turns ripping off big yardage on end sweeps to move the ball downfield on the drive.

Bellwood-Antis made an adjustment however and the rest of the contest belonged to the Blue Devils. B-A head coach John Hayes explained after the game, "We moved people out wider to compensate for their success running outside and had our defensive linemen take a different angle and put more pressure on their quarterback." The B-A defense, led by interior linemen Chris Himes, Andy Mock, Gabe McClellan, Gerald Whitakcr, Jamie Gummo and Chris Holes limited Juniata Valley to just 56 yards total offense for the rest of the game. Bellwood-Antis tallied twice more in the first half to take a 19-6 lead at half- lime. First tailback Chris McCartney dashed 43 yards for a TD and Gummo booted the extra point. Then McCart- ney capped an eight play drive by crashing in from three yards out for another score.

Key plays in the drive were an 11 yard jaunt by Bo Lardieri, which pushed Lardieri over the 1000 yard mark in his high school career, and a 13 yard scamper by McCartney to move the sticks for first downs. The drive had been set up by a Karl Montanaro interception of a Hornet aerial. A shanked punt and a personal foul' penalty gave Bellwood-Antis the ball at the Juniata Valley 12 yard line near the end of the third quarter. The Blue Devils took advantage with McCartney covering all the yardage on four plays for the TD. The B-A defense, which forced the Hornets to punt on five straight second half series, then held Juniata Valley and took over on their own 27 yard line.

McCartney broke through the right side of the line and outraced his pursuit for a 73 yard romp for his fourth TD of the afternoon and 22nd of the season. McCartney led all rushers with 238 yards on 24 carries. This gives McCartney three 200 yard-plus rushing performances in his career at B-A. Only Don 'Booker' Moore has more than one, in addition to McCartney, having turned the trick twice in 198S. Coach Hayes was pleased with the final result, butnot with the early going.

"We were flat in the first half. Maybe it was because of playing on Saturday afternoon, but we just weren't playing with the kind of enthusiasm that we needed." When asked about the Blue Devils rather skimpy chances of making the district playoffs, Hayes are trying to keep going in a positive tone, to win our game next week and then the Mid-Penn playoff, but we arc disappointed that right now it looks like we just won't be able to qualify for the districts. We feel that we are capable and good enough to qualify for one of the playoff spots, but the way it is drawn up it doesn't seem like we will make it." Bellwood-Antis returns home this Friday evening for their regular season finale with Bedford for senior night. (UPI) No. 24 Perm State saved its defensive best for last Saturday, ending a 10-year scries against Alabama by handing the Crimson Tide its first home shutout since 1955. Limited on offense to three Craig Fayak field goals, the Nittany Lions used their defensive muscle to record a 9-0 victory and break a three-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide. Pcnn State intercepted five passes, two of which set up Fayak scores, and held Alabama to only 141 total yards. The Crimson Tide's six yards rushing were the lowest ever for an Alabama team and the shutout was its first in Tuscaloosa since Texas Christian posted a 21-0 triumph in 1955.

"I thought the defense played very, very smooth," Penn State Coach Joe Paterno said. "We thought going into the game that it was going to be a tough defensive game and we knew it was not going to be high scoring." Fayak kicked field goals of 34, 50 and 34 yards, the first and last set up by Darren Perry interceptions, as the Nittany Lions won their fifth straight game after opening the season with two losses. The game was the last in an intersectional rivalry that has been played annually for the past 10 years.

Alabama had won eight of the 12 previous meetings in the series, which included three bowl clashes before the decade-long series. "We just never could get anything going offensively," Alabama Coach Gene Stallings said. "I thought defensively we played tough. But the running game sputtered and the passing game was worse than that." Penn State forged a 3-0 lead in the first half on the strength of its defense. Perry intercepted a Gary Hollingsworth pass on the third play from scrimmage to set up the Nittany Lions at the Alabama 29.

The drive stalled at the 17 and Fayak kicked a 34-yard field goal for the only score of the half. Alabama missed a chance to tie the game when Philip Doyle was wide on a 43-yard field goal attempt that came after the Crimson Tide recovered a Leroy Thompson fumble on the Nittany Lion 23. Penn State got a chance to add to its lead when a 46-yard punt return by Tiffen Thomas gave the offense the ball at the Alabama 33. But three plays failed to pick up a first down and Byron Holdbrooks blocked a 46- yard attempt by Fayak. Alabama took over on the Penn State 45 and drove to the 30 on a fourth-and-1 pass from Hollingsworth to Kevin Turner, but Turner fumbled on the next play and Penn State recovered on its 20 and ran out the half.

Tom Bill came off the bench to replace quarterback Tony Sacca in the third quarter and promptly led Penn State on a nine-play, 43-yard drive for its second score a 50-yard field goal by Fayak, the longest of his career. Bill had a key two-yard run to convert a third down, then ran 19 yards on the next play to the Alabama 30 to set up Fayak's kick with .3:12 left in the period. Perry's second interception and 8-yard return to the Alabama 42 set up Fayak's third field goal a 34-yarder with 11:44 left that came after the drive stalled at the 17. "Coming in, I knew both defenses would be good so it might come down tome," Fayak said. "Toget three field goals in a game like this is a big confidence booster to roe." Alabama drove to a first-and-10 at the Penn State 38 midway through the fourth quarter, but Frank Giannetti intercepted a short Hollingsworth pass to kill the Crimson Tide's final threat Bodybuilding Achim Albrecht of Germany was crowned "Mr.

Universe" at the 44th World Amateur Bodybuilding Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The San Francisco 49ers survived a scare Sunday to stay undefeated but because they got one, Bud Carson may have survived another week as coach of the Cleveland Browns. San Francisco, 7-0, escaped with a 20-17 victory when Mike Cofer kicked a 45-yard field goal with five seconds remaining. The loss dropped the Browns to 2-6. Owner Art Modell implied Carson's job hung on a solid effort.

Although they struggled, the Browns rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the score with 70 seconds left. The comeback came after starter Bemie Kosar was benched in favor of Mike Pagel, who completed 13 of 21 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The Browns crept within 17-10 with 9:13 left when Pagel threaded an 11-yard scoring strike through linebacker Keena Turner's hands to Webster Slaughter. Felix Wright intercepted Joe Montana at the San Francisco 27 to set up the drive. Pagel engineered a 66-yard, 11-play drive to tie the score with 70 seconds remaining.

He hit Ozzie Newsome with a 4-yard toss on a fade pattern in the end zone to make it 17-17. Montana completed just 17-of-37 passes for 185 yards, one touchdown and a pair of interceptions that led to 10 Cleveland points. It was the worst afternoon Montana had since he went 17 of for 222 yards and one touchdown in a loss to Denver in 1985. Montana was 6-of-18 for 70 yards and two interceptions in the second half but on the final drive, completed a 35-yard strike to Mike Sherrard and a 5-yard pass to Jerry Rice to set up the kick. "We feel like we're probably one of the best teams in the league when it comes down to the two-minute drill," said fullback Tom Rathman, who scored on a 1-yard dive in the first half.

And we didn't even have two minutes today." The 49ers came into the contest so thin at wide receiver that backup quarterback Steve Young was used as wide out when they went four wide. Then in the fourth quarter, Sherrard broke his right ankle and was lost for four to six weeks. He missed nearly two seasons recovering from a twice broken right leg. The 49ers recorded four sacks, forced three turnovers, held the Browns twice inside the 20 on fourth down and gave up just 38 yards on 18 attempts on the ground. "The bottom, line is that it doesn't matter if you get beat by 3 or 30," Pagel said.

"You still lose the ball game." It remains to be seen if anyone loses their job.
