Jiggs Unhurt By 60-Ft. Fall LOS ANGELES, May Jiggs was back in his stall contentedly munching oats today after an experience such as few polo ponies have survived. The 9-year-old horse fell 600 feet into a Calabasas Mountain canyon and lived to munch grass on the bottom. The canyon has no mouth and the last horse to fall in stayed there seven years. W.

D. Dubrock, the owner, was not to lose his favorite mount, however. He sent four cowboys to dig a foothold up the steep mountainside. With ropes and special belts, they tugged and pushed the pony 600 feet back up to the trail. Jiggs was little the worse from the fall or the rough journey back up.

LOS ANGELES, May (U.P,) A 142 by Olin Dutra stood out today as the best of six players qualifying in sectional rounds for the National Open golf tournament in Detroit. June 10. Others were Fay Coleman, 144; Fred Morrison, 146; Willie Hunter, 147; George von Elm, 150; Bud Oakley, 150. Through Les Madison qualified with 146 and Stanley Kertes with 149, neither could make the trip so Von Elm and Oakley were substituted. Olin Dutra Class of Field in Golf Play Romero Gets 6 Mons.

For Poor Ring Effort LOS ANGELES, May (U.P.)John (Bandit) Romero of San Diego today was under six months suspension from California prizefighting rings for his poor effort against Gus Lesnevich of New Jersey at the Hollywood arena Friday. The State A Athletic Commission acted on Romero yesterday. The San Diegan, favored 2-1 in the betting, was floored three times before the referee stopped the fight. NAMED ASSISTANT CANYON, May Anthony Dougal, former Temple University tackle and present high school coach at Smethport, Pa. today was named assistant athletic coach at West Texas State College.

It seems that Eddie Laikowski, 23, was caught off base by an employee, of was Greenwich climbing Street through resthe transom and pleaded guilty to a charge of illegal entry. When he was called for sentence yesterday his team mates went to bat for him, with letters to the judge explaining how tough it would be if the First Warders had to start their season without Second Baseman Laikowski. Judge Donnellan suspended sen- tence. GOLD BADGE STOLEN PHILADELPHIA, May his Lou Wilgarde, Mayor's secretary, reported for work today without his gold badge.

L. track coaches have been asking this question all week until they were blue in the face. But is Kemp through? The great Uni speedster who equaled the O. A. L.

mark of :9.9 for the 100- yard dash early in the season, has looked terrible in losing his last two races in the fair times of :10 flat and :10.2. The coaches are worrying over the fact that Woody Allison might be up to some last-minute tricks in having Kemp tr lose. Without Kemp as a winner, University hasn't a chance in the big meet. It he is at top form he can gain 30 points for the Cubs in the sprints alone. As things stand today, Technical appears to be the squad to beat.

But Technical was the team to beat last year, until they faded badly in the last few weeks. OAKLAND GREEN Oakland, winner last season, has a green team that is coming fast. 11 the boys from the Park Boulevard school come through as expected the meet can go.to Fremont will also be up in the money. The Tigers have a terrific all-around strength, that extends three deep. If the boys all click at once, Fremont will be right around the top.

The strange irony of the meet seems to hang over. the remaining four teams of the league Castlemont, San Leandro and McClymonds. It any records are to be broken, Castlemont, Roosevelt and San Leandro seem to have the best chances. Clayton Baldwin of Castlemont's 6 feet inch mark will certainly go smash- and a majority of dopesters think that Clayton will do the smashing. Tommy Sedell of San Leandro is the only pole vaulter in the league capable of going higher than 12 feet 2, which is the O.

A. L. record. MILE RACE CLOSE Either Ernie or Dave Knops of Roosevelt and Ross Miller of Oakland can hang up a new mark in the mile. The old mark of 4:32.7 is one of the fastest records in the State, but if the boys pace themselves right, any one of' the trio can set new mark.

The scoring this season will be the same as last. The class division will. score the winner as 5. second place 4, third place 3, fourth place 2, and last, 1. The class division will be scored double for each place.

Therefore, 10 will be given first place, 8 for second, 6 for third, for fourth and 2 for last. On the same scale class A will give 15 points to a winner, 12 for second place, 9 for third, 6 for fourth and 3 for last. It will almost be impossible to pick a dope sheet as the coaches will be shifting men from division to division in order to pick up more points. However, tomorrow we do the impossible. That is, pick dope sheet.

Seven Dogs Race At El Cerrito Tonight On May 4, 20, good greyhounds started eliminations for the $1500 pot at El Cerrito Dog Track. All that remains of this list today are seven game hounds. which have survived five blistering heats. These seven run tonight in the semi-finals, which, incidentally, offer the smallest field to appear at El Cerrito this year. When they're through racing fivesixteenths of a mile tonight, only will temain, one being elimihated.

The six go back Tuesday night, May 25, with the $1500 at stake. The dope shows Sierra Snow and Agricola Queen as the best money performers. Sierro Snow has won two straight and has a second and two third places. Agricola Queen has won twice and has three second places. Johnny Dell is the dark horse, with two seconds and two thirds.
