The Star-News, Sunday, June 29, 1986 TUESDAY EVENING JULY 1 'Monday Night Baseball' gets going this week By Wendy Wallace Most of the week's schedule centers on the Fourth of July Statue ot Liberty Centennial celebration and the accompanying hoopla, but ABC will attempt to divert viewers lor a lew hours when its perennial winner, "Monday Night Baseball," premieres June 30. Al Michaels joins ABC's "Sunday Baseball" host, former Baltimore pitcher Jim Palmer. Tim McCarver and Keith Jackson will do the play-by-play and color lor the back-up game. Arm Jillian, Melba Moore and Ben Vereen. An escapist film, "Poison Ivy" (NBC, June 29) might help influence reluctant kids to go to camp.

It features two of NBC's top teen idols, Michael J. Fox and Nancy McKeon, as a reluctant college-age counselor and an assistant nurse, respectively, at an unpredictable summer camp. America celebrates both Independence Day and the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. Not only has the statue been exten-. sivejy refurbished for this event, but hundreds of Amerl-' can companies, not to- mention Individual businessmen, have tried to develop, profitable tie-Ins to the gala Has the celebration of what should Ideally be a people's egalitarian event become too commercial? Is the American flag red, white and blue? Take the case of television. ABC has paid $10 million to the Statue of Liberty Foundation for to cover the celebration. Most of the celebration Is being staged for the benefit of the cameras.

Mega-event producer David Wolper "The Tiiorn Birds," "North and has taken a simple celebration and It Into four days worth of glittery star-studded events that could have been dreamed up only In Hollywood. Names like Liza Minnelll, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson and Whitney Houston will adorn the massive opening and closing ceremonies. Zubln Mehta and Pla-cido Domingo willheadline a classical concert. Mary Lou Retton and Dorothy Hamlll will lead the sports salute to the statue. And there are many, many more scheduled events and plenty of other big names wilj appear, like John Denver, Johnny Cash and Barry Marulow.

All of this is practically guaranteed to bring the folks in from the Fourth Of July barbecue and even pull the kids out of the pool. It will also make ABC a nice profit. The revenues brought in by commercials during the net work's planned 17-and-one-half-hour special coverage of the four-day event have been estimated to be about $16 million to $18 million. After plentiful expenses (ABC estimates about $14 million), there will still a nice hefty $2 million to $4 million profit. And what could be more American than making money? But American television should not be completely condemned.

Ironically, its coverage wiU be providing the only bit of democracy for the common man who can't afford to shell out $250 for live tickets to Woiper's production.
