Wrestling By Phillip Brents Sports Editor Nine South County mat men have been selected as members of the 20-man San Diego County All -Star Team that will compete at Saturday's California State Games Wrestling Championships in Concord. Last year, the South Bay contributed just three mat stars to the team. This is the fourth year for competition in the state association-style championships, which features a one-day preliminary and finals-round. The tournament is considered second in stature only to the high school state meet. Eligibility is restricted to wrestlers who participated during the past high school season (grades 9-12).

The selection of the team ended a month-long series of challenge matches. Montgomery High led the local field with three qualifiers: Rudy pounds)i Sergio Enloe (154) and Richard Corpus (165). Bonita Vista and Chula Vista high schools each qualified two wrestlers: Jeff Hambrick and Joel Martinez, both at 114.5 pounds, from Chula Vista; and Jason Harrison (123) and Mike Joel Martinez Rudy Plasencia 1 Both qualify for second straight State Games Photo by James Brammcr Bonita Vista's Jason Harrison, in action against Ohio's Gerry Scott, qualified for second straight county all-star team. Other returners to the squad include four grapplers from Poway High Steve Lee (105.5), Ricco Morel (143), Jason Barker (154) and Sean Malliet (191.5) -and Grossmont High's Todd Bell (143). Rounding out this year's roster are Poway's Rich Salo (132); Lincoln Prep's Willie Jones (165); Ramon a's Atti Toth and Rancho Bernardo's Dan Dressel, both at 178 pounds; Kearny's Mike Gamble (220) and Hoover's Mohammed Fahra (275).

The team's head coach is San Diego High's Greg Dixon. Assistants are Poway High's Wayne Branstetter and San Diego Wrestling Association president Dick Bailey. Two years ago, San Diego's All-Stars placed a very close third in the team standings, and last year were fifth. Returning placers besides Martinez and Plasencia in clude: Lee (third), Barker (fourth) and Morel (fifth). Ten members of the State Games all-star team also qualified for the 1991-92 CIF-State Meet: Mendoza; Corpus; Lee; Salo; Morel; Barker; Bell; Dressel; Toth and Gamble.

Bell placed second at the state finals. Notepad Both Harbin, an incoming sophomore, and Bonita Vista's Harrison and Mendoza, both incoming juniors, are earning duty on their second all-star team within a week. All three competed on last Friday's San Diego All-Star squad that dropped a 1 2-9 decision to the touring Ohio All-Stars at Valhalla High. Harbin won both his matches by pin while Harrison and Mendoza also were victorious. The Ohio All-Stars featured live state champions, four city champions, three regional and four national place-winners on their roster.

How tough did the competition rate?
