In fact, for a while it appeared the Power would suffer the worst pummelling of Chicagoans since the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. The Blackhawks outshot their visitors from the Midwest by an outrageous margin of 28-2. However, the 'Hawks could manage only a pair of first-half goals, had a few other close calls, and otherwise had trouble finishing their scoring opportunities.

"Certainly, I am disappointed with the overall results, but a win is a win, especially in a cup tie. Of course, we're in a slump where we're having trouble finishing, but I hope we can take advantage of tonight's positives," said Black-hawk head coach Laurie Calloway. "It's not like we haven't been trying we're working as hard as we can on finishing from close range but we're in a slump and we'll eventually snap out of it," added Blackhawk and United States National Team midfielder Dominic Kin-near, the subject of high praise by Power defender Bret Hall. Chicago head coach Pato Margetic was very diplomatic after the match, though his team had been swamped by the APSL's current third-place club and its defending champions. "We were overwhelmed tonight by a very good, technical team," said Margetic, who also plays at striker for his club.

The veteran of outdoor and indoor soccer in the U.S. also said he felt that his team was fortunate to allow only two goals, adding that the Power "will be ready" for the Blackhawks when the teams face off in the second leg of the series August 19 in Chicago. Sweeper Danny Pena got the Blackhawks on the board in the 19th minute. After a Kinnear cornerkick had been parried around by a few Blackhawk and Power players, Jorge Salazar settled the ball at the near touchline about 1 5 yards from goal. His far-post cross then proceeded to find Pena quite unmarked for a 1 -0 lead.

Pena's goal was the Blackhawks' first since Mike Masters tallied early against Miami in a 2-1 loss July 4 some 277 minutes of playing time. The Blackhawks' second goal, tallied in the. 38th minute, was a "gimme" goal by virtual definition. In fact, it was in-dicative of how things went on the ing for Chicago. Salazar positioned 30 yards from goal on the left touchline chipped a "dump" pass toward the left wing.

As the ball found space, it bounced twice, which left a pair of Power defenders dazed. Midfielder Paul Holocher ran under the semi-airborne sphere and tucked it under Chicago goalkeeper Markus Roy's right side for a 2-0 edge. Besides those goals, Pena, Peter Isaacs and Joey Leonettl each hit one kind of post or another. The Blackhawks racked up 10 corners to the Power's four. Roy, youngest son of former Sting coach Willy Roy, was called on to make nine saves while Dave Salzwedel, an alumnus of Cal-Lutheran University, recorded one save to notch his first professional shutout.

In the 77th minute, Chicago's Vilmar "Vava" Marquez split between a pair of defenders to enter the penalty area alone on Salzwedel, who then stopped the point-blank shot. The Blackhawks swing back into APSL action Sunday night, July 26 against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers at San Jose's Spartan Stadium. APSL Notepad: The Tampa Bay Rowdies crushed the Miami Freedom, 8-2, Saturday, July 18 at the Orange Bowl to vault past the Blackhawks and Colorado Foxes into first place. The carnage didn't set a league record (the all-time APSL rout was Seattle's 1 0-2 pummeling of visiting Arizona on June 2, 1990) but the Rowdies certainly were thorough.

Tampa Bay defender Steve Trittschuh scored the first goal in the fourth minute, and the Rowdies built a 4-0 lead before the Freedom rallied less than two minutes before the half on goals by defender Luis Medina and veteran forward Derek Sanderson. That, however, was Miami's last look at the game as Tampa Bay scored four unanswered goals in the second half. The Rowdies' trio of former Maryland Bays stars led the way: Forward Philip Gyau scored three goals and chipped in an assist to earn Player of the Week honors; midfielder Kevin Sloan added a goal and two assists and forward Jean Harbor -jumped into the lead in the APSL scoring race with two goals (six goals, two assists for 14 points overall). In addition, Trittschuh scored a second goal, and defender Ralph Black recorded two assists to take the league lead in that category with five. Coaches' Poll: The Blackhawks and 19-year-old Taifour Diane of the Foxes were the favorites of the APSL head coa-, ches in an informal mid-season poll conducted by the league.

The Blackhawks were rated No. 1 in three of five team categories and Diane paced two of six individual player categories. The Blackhawks were voted No. 1 in best team attack, best team skill and best team fitness while Diane took top honors in best technical player and toughest player to mark.
