Sibley's Downtown OPEN MONDAYS and THURSDAYS 9:30 to a paradox which Shaw himself would have relished by reason of a performance which durinf the first scene seemed likely to be its ruin. The Professor Henry Higgins of Rex Harrison is the most theatrically compelling, the amusing, the crispest-spoken, the most phonetically-passionate and the most touching Higgins I have ever encountered." So much for "My Fair Lady" and now we'll be waiting to hear from France about musical "Gigi" but we'll take an optimistic tip-off from Maurice Chevalier who was discussing his life the other day on his 70th birthday. He confirmed what the Americans have always thought the French thought was of prime importance affairs of the heart.

And said Chevalier: "The only regret I have is that I have not taken love seriously tnough." Ah Shaw, on the other hand, was innocent of any such notions in his approach to his heroine. He once said that if he had to choose on grounds of intellect and passion he'd "recognize that intellect is a passion far more indispensable than physical ecstasy or reproduction." So really, you see, Shaw and Colette probably had very little in common. But Lerner, Loew and Beaton have in common two hits. I 4 London newspapers on the reception for "My Fair Lady" with Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the leads. It will be recalled that the play opened on London's West End on May 2 to one of the most excited audiences that had assembled in the memory of living critics.

"JHE CLIPPINGS were brought back from England by Mrs. Harry L. Segal of 30 Stoneham who bought all the papers the next day, eager to explore the critical English slant on an American interpretation of British Mr. Shaw's play. The praises all enwrapping like a London fog, but the Sunday Times did clear a little spot for a word or two but not manjr-for a cool look at the thing.

To quote, in part: "'My Fair Lady brought off a near-miracle. It actually overtopped expectations. It is not merely as good as we have been told; it is better. The key-line of Shaw's play has, through a misunderstanding of the nature of dramatic 1 1 1 1 been changed; the music, though catchy, is less good than that of or of 'South Pacific'; Julie Andrews acting, though not her singing, has no interest whatever; the scenery is unimaginative, opulent and vulgar; the author of the book, Alan Jay Lerner, has foisted onto the most piercing and unsentimental intellect of the English theater the outlook of a Charles Garvice or a Berta Ruck; the direction has so little knowledge of class and period that the romantic Freddie does not lift his hat when he meets a lady; and the attention to detail is so casual that Colonel Pickering is shown reading a 1912 copy of The Times which could not possibly have been printed earlier than 1931." But, continues the article "JN SPITE of all this, 'My Fair Lady' is a joy and a triumph. And it is so, through GIRL WHO MAKES GOOD Kim Stanley stars in "The story of a star's rise to fame, at Fine Arts tomorrow.

1 1 $lww JimsLSu Jvjdcuf By JEAN WALRATH QNE of Brodaway'j purveyors of what-do-youknow-about-that information flashes the word that as of tomorrow night, "My Fair Lady" will be in ninth' spot in the history of all long-run musicals. In only two more years, if she lives that Jong on Broadway, she will have surpassed "Oklahoma!" to become the musical hit of all time and there are those who will bet she'll make it. "Fair Lady," now 2M years old, has never played to anything less than a sold-out house. The musical, which played to eight sold-out houses in Rochester when a first-anniversary road show came here in March of 1957, is reported returning next March and undoubtedly 20,000 more Roch-esterians will see it and again an equal number will be turned away. But in the meantime Rochester is to see "Gigi," which as movie musicals go is the biggest hit so far on Broadway.

Since the opening last March 16 the Royale has sold every seat for showings seven nights a week and two afternoons. Leslie Caron plays Gigi and Maurice Chevalier an aging charmer. THE FILM, with book and music by Lerner and Loew and settings by Cecil Beaton, the artists who put together "My Fair Lady," arrives in Rochester on Oct. 9, and then we shall see whether the people of our city fall as much in love with "Gigi" as the moviegoers in New York. Americans made them into hits, but it was the French and the English who provided the inspiration, both themes having escaped from the pens of native persons of letters George Bernard Shaw in England and Colette in France.

Both had the rags-to-riches notion in mind. Shaw's Cinderella was a flower girl who escaped her lowly class by acquiring phonetical perfection while Collette's was the winsome young lady who escaped courtcsanship, her fate by training and inheritance, by falling in love. Both found rich and charming men. We haven't heard from France how the French like what the Americans have done to the film version of "Gigi," but one of our treasures, acquired this summer, is a batch of clippings from I DOWNTOWN MOVIES Lotw't Glenn Ford and Red Buttons in "Imitation General," 12:55, 3:55, 6:55, 10. KISCO, N.Y., Sept. 28 (VP) The wife of Hollywood producer Joseph L. Man-kiewicz was found dead yesterday in their summer home here. Police said a nearly indecipherable note was found in her hand. She was the former Rose Stradner, 45, a one-time motion picture actress from Vienna.

A caretaker found the body lying on the floor next to a writing table. Police listed the death tentatively as natural pending an autopsy. Mankiewicz, also a writer and director, said he had last seen his wife Friday night when he left here for New York to work on a forthcoming Broadway play. She appeared in good spirits at the time added. Miss Stradner wed the film executive in 1939.

She retired from film work in 1944! Her last movie was "The Keys of the Kingdom." Earlier she had appeared in "Blind Alley" and "One Hun- dred Days of Napoleon."
