PARSONS JOLLYWOOD, Jan. 9 (INS) "The Defiant Ones." which is Stanley Kramer's first on his six-picture contract with United Artists starts March 15 with Tony Curtis and Sidney Poiticr as the stars.

That gives Tony a pretty tight schedule because he won't finish "The Perfect Furlough" until the end of February, and "Defiant" precedes "Porgy and Bess" for Poiticr. I asked Stanley to tell me something about "The Defiant Ones." He said, "it's exactly as its title indicates, a story of the defiance of youth in our society today. The principals are a white boy and a Negro chained to one another as both try to escape from a chain gang." The script is by Nathan E. Douglas and Harold J. Smith and it's a very dramatic story which gives both actors an equal chance." "VIRGINIA PA LANCE tells me she has never been more excited in her life.

She'll leave for Paris the first of next month with the three children, to play one of the top femme roles in "The Extra Edge," the picture Jack Palance is making with Jeff Chandler. She said Jack intends to stay in Europe for two years and she and the children will take a house outside of Paris. Mrs. Palance will use her stage name of Virginia Baker. "I was an actress for many years, you know," she told me, "before I married Jack, and I hope to resume my career again.

"How is everything going?" I asked her. "Everything is all right at the moment," she said, "but I never know. I just have to do the best I can." fpiE OPENING of the two Tennessee Williams plays, "Suddenly Last Summer" and "Something Unspoken" at the York Theater in New York, was a triumph for Warner Le-Roy, son of Mervyn LeRoy and Mrs. Charles Vidor. Warner is the producer, and he had an elite audience of first nighters.

Mervin, of course, was there beaming and so were Doris Vidor, his uncle Milton Sperling and Bob Taplinger. Later, Nedda and Josh Logan gave a party for the talented young man and it was old home week with much interest centering around the bride and groom, Natalie Wood and Bob Wagner. Roz Russell and Freddie Brisson and many other Hollywood folk who had a chance to congratulate Warner. Princess Gaetani, Mrs. LeRoy's daughter, was escorted by Aly Khan.

There has been so much talk about Ava Gardner's beautiful face being badly scarred after her accident in a bullring in Spain that I am glad to be able to say the doctors believe she will be able to start her picture "Goya" in March. It's the same bloodstream, whether in finger or arm.

The drop or so taken from the finger can be tested In many ways by what we call the "micro method." Not all doctors or laboratories are equipped to do this, so they take a larger sample from the arm and use other methods of getting the same information. If your doctor still takes blood from the arm for a blood sugar test (for diabetes) don't think he's old-fashioned. He's not. It is still a very common method. Sold Out Thru Sat.

"Dear Dr. Molner: I wish you would write about goiter if it can be dissolved. Mrs.

It would be nice and it would be fine with me! if we could "dissolve" some of the enlargements or lumps or crystals in the body. But it isn't that simple. You can drop a lump of sugar in a cup of tea, and the sugar will dissolve. If you let that cup of tea sit, the water will evaporate and in time you will find that the sugar has solidified again. It is still there! And so with the body.

For a moment, let's talk about some other things that we keep hoping we can "dissolve," like gall stones and kidney stones. What happens basically is this: There is a certain amount of solid material already dissolved either in the bile of the gall bladder or the urine in the kidneys. If this liquid passes off quickly enough, the solids dissolved in them are carried off, too. That is the way nature intended it. But if the gall bladder is infected, or if it is sluggish, the dissolved bile salts start to crystallize.

They will form crystals like tiny snow-flakes at first, and then gradually grow into larger flakes, and in time become "stones." The same sort of thing occurs with kidney stones. There is no practical way to dissolve these stones. Any- thing that will dissolve them I will be too strong, and will damage the body tissues. However, experiments are going on. It has been found that the bile of dogs and other animals in test tubes will dissolve a human gall stone.

How to get such bile into the human gall bladder, however, is another question, Still, it is a step forward and perhaps out of this work will come a simpler answer for gall stones. With kidney stones, proper diet (altering either the acid or alkaline balance) will in part prevent the growth of stones, but here we have come only part of the way, I don't know what the future holds for us, but I have a feeling that in a few more years we can expect some very useful advances. So now let's talk about "dissolving" a goiter. A goiter is a thyroid gland which has grown too lare. In this case we can't "dissolve" it.

A thyroid gland which is enlarging because it is forced into too much effort can be controlled with drugs. The actual size of the gland, however, may still increase, so the goiter "grows." They patient, however, is improved. In some cases, such as the colloid goiter" of adolescence, the goiter may recede in size after administering suitable amounts of iodine, but to say that the goiter is "dissolved" is not quite the right word. Once the nodules of the thyroid expand, they usually stay that way, and nothing short of surgery will reduce the size. "Dearer.
