Public response was not overwhelming, the auditorium being less than half filled. Musically, the concert was a rare bargain, for it offered the complete orchestra in a program of symphonic caliber, and at popular prices.

Moreover, the music selected, having been played at recent Philharmonic concerts, went with an exuberance and technical assurance that came from thorough familiarity with it. Two the pieces were played last Thursday at the regular evening Philharmonic concert. These were the concerto for violin and orchestra by the British composer, William Walton, with Millard Taylor, the orchestra concertmaster as soloist, and the Richard Strauss tone poem, "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks." The first half of the program was given over to the Prokofieff Sixth Symphony, which the orchestra played on Nov. 10. A second hearing of the Walton concerto confirmed this reporter in the view that this is indeed one of the important works of its kind in the contemporary field.

It was commissioned by and first played in 1939 by Jascha Heifetz, to who it was dedicated. It has an abundance of material for both the violin and the orchestra, and while written in modern style, with few well defined themes, is consistently pleasing and has emotional power. FESTIVAL POSTSCRIPT: Why Lasky Remembers Rochester How Curators Turned Producers Where Rosson Came Into World By JEAN WALRATH STARDUST from the First Festival of Film Arts, Eastman Theater, Nov. 19, 1955: THIS WASN'T the first visit to Rochester for Producer Jesse L. Lasky, nor his first visit to the Eastman Theater. He was there for celebration that opened the theater and recalls "shaking the hand of your great George Eastman." Moreover, he recalled Saturday that it was in Rochester that he found Rouben Mamoulian, the now distinguished film director.

He plucked him from the Eastman School of Music staff. Mamoulian told him where he could get another director from Rochester. He did. That was George Cukor, also at the top of his field in Hollywood today. An extremely profitable trip to Rochester it was, said Lasky.

ANYONE WHO HAS ever staged a full scale festival would find this to believe, but the small' staff of George Eastman House did it along with its regular work of running a film library--and this is not the kind of work that librarians and scholars are accustomed to doing. They rolled up their sleeves and worked like crazy for six weeks at every kind of a job from hunting up movie stars all over two continents to hunting up lost overcoats and rubbers at the very end. HAL ROSSON, the cameraman who won one of the "George" awards, let it slip during his acceptance speech that he first saw the light of day in this vicinity. He was born in Geneseo. YOUTHFUL CHARLTON HESTON (31) was one of the most commanding personalities of all on the Eastman stage last Saturday night.

The tall actor with resonant voice and elegant diction stepped up to take an award for Cecil B. DeMille. Lasky said he feels DeMille's "Ten Commandments" will be Timetable DOWNTOWN MOVIES Loew's Joan Crawford in "Queen Bee." 12:50, 3:50, 6:50, 9:55. Here were the votes: Richard Barthelmess: "Tol'able David," which he said was his own baby and financially backed by the man who is now governor of New York State, W. Averell Harriman. He mentioned also "Brocken Blossoms" because it. was the one that put me in the money, so to speak." Cameraman Arthur Edeson: "Three Musketeers," "Robin Hood," "Thief of Bagdad" and "Stella Dallas." Director Frank Borzage: "Humoresque." Harold Lloyd "Grandma's Boy," "Safety Last" and "Freshman." Marshall Neilan, Long Legs," "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" and "Stella Maris." CHARMING ACTRESS Mae Marsh told the audience at the Eastman that she has a small grandson who had boasted to his playmates that his grandmother was a movie star, The playmates, upon seeing her, had expressed eloquent disbelief, for Grandmother is 60. But now, she said, she has the "George" award to prove it.

"I'm going to put it on she said, "And my grandson can say: 'See, she was a movie star, but in the olden days'." MARY PICKFORD'S remarkable memory for details of the past makes her an invaluable friend of the Eastman House, and last Saturday film curator James Card and assistant curator George Pratt put her to work on remembering things for their archives and straightening out some confusion on details. One of the episodes Mary was remembering the other evening was the first meeting held at her house to discuss the idea of establishing an Academy Award.
