Whipple, commissioner of the Forest, Fish anil (innie Hcptirliuonl of the State of New York, addressed the ttieu of this villtise last night in the village, building on the -subject of "Forest preservation in tile Slate of New York." The meeting whs under the auspices of the Men's Club of the Presbyterian Church. Vpon reaching tlio village yesterday afternoon Mr. Whipple was taken to the home of V. S. Gooding, where supper wns served to a delegation of the men's club consisting of 'twenty and to Mr.

Whipple. Mr. Gooding's son is in the employ of the Forest, Fish and Game Department, and he accompanied the commissioner to this The meeting was called to order at 8 o'clock by President West fall, of the club, ami after two selections by the male quartette, consisting of Messt. lUwloy, l-'raley, Toole and Wilson, Mr. Whipple was introduced.

In his address Mr. Whipple said that twelve years ago when he entered his department the number of tish raised yearly for the stocking of the streams was but 0110 million. Lout year the number hatched was twelve millions. The reasons given by the commissioner for restocking the streams of this state were that tih in the F.mpiro State were becoming leas plentiful and that the fish purify the water to a certain extent. Without birds every forest in the statej of New York would die within tive years, said Mr.

Whipple. There were at the present time in the state of New York o78 known species of insectivorous birds, which was equal lo the number in any other state and more than was found in many. These birds, Mr. Whipple said, destroyed great numbers of those insects so injurious and dangerous to plant life. The robin, which steals a cherry from the tree in the garden, takes on an average of one hundred and lifty insects day to its nest for the young.

The pheasant, said Mr. Whipple, which is being complained of In this county for taking a kernel of corn now and then, yearly destroys more potato bugs than those that reach tho plants. If it were not for the birds of the state, then, tho leaves on the trees would be eaten. The leaves being the part of the plant and tree which feeds the body, would cause the food to be shut off, and the natural result would be Ihe death of the tree. Although a vote will be tnken on the proposition to pave Kim street from Main to Keuka street, it is again claimed that if it should be carried the vote will not be a valid one because of insufficient notice through publication in newspapers. The board of trustees has all along been neutral in the matter, neither advocating opposing the proposition.

The petitioners who requested that such a vote be taken were told when tho petition was presented that it was a little late in the day, but the petitioners thought otherwise, it is said, and so the board has presented the matter to the taxpayers. There appears to be no questiou in the miuds of those In a position to know the law in the matter that the vote will not be blinding.
