THE tOUTHEBB SPIRIT. Tomorrow the remains of Jeff. Davis A MUCH NEEDED OEOAHIZATIOS. We are by no means the only ones who advocate that there should be a well- Young Men's Christian Association in this city. Frequently we hear the statement made that there is a good field here for work of this character, and surprise is expressed that not long ago such an organization was started.

It is to be regretted, also, that so little interest is manifested in this matter, whi-U, it seems to us, is of great importance. A large number of active, intelligent young men are growing up around us and no effort is mide outside of what the church directly does to lead them into right channels and to provide other places of resort and recreation outside of the secret club and pool rooms, the saloons and even more questionable places. This ought not to be. Rev. Kephart in giving to his congregation some of the impressions which he received while at General Conference, last Sunday morning, incidentally alluded to the Y.

M. C. A. and expressed himself in the following words: "The general conference met in the spacious hall belonging to the Young Men's Christian Association, located about one-half square from onr publishing house and affording ample room for the large crowds that gathered from time to time to hear the discussions of this body. And here yon will pardon me for turning aside to say something in relation to this organization, which has made a considerable impression upon me.

They have a fine building in the city of Dayton, and are recognized throughout as a fine organization, and they certainly deserve to be noticed among the great evangelistic methods. "Our city of Lebanon should by all means have an institution of this kind. Some years ago when the question was brought up it met with opposition on tho part of those who should have given it Both the method and respite Eyrup of Figs is taken; it is pleasant and refreshing to the taste, and acts gently yet promptly on the Kidneys, Liver and Bowels, cleanses the system effectually, dispels colds, headaches and fevers and cures hahitual constipation. There is a large field be reinterred at Richmond, for snch work in our midst, and while it is with the pomp and display tho South not perfect in its way.and permits things and enthusiasts will been- that it ought not to permit, it keeps from other places moon worse and from other societies where they are influenced, I may say, and where young men are being led down into paths of death and shame. 'A city the size of this with no Y.

M. C. A. well shows that we have here some to prepare. There cannot be so objection to this.

The Southern people have been taught to worship the Wry name of Jefferson Davis, although In truth it can be said he wae their worst There would not be so much objection to all the display these people if it were not for the fact that those among them who are more intelligent and know better did not aim to tweh the yonnjf Southerners that the ouue in which they were engaged was worthy one. Treason is nothing but odious; worthy. An effort to the Union is nothing but rank treason and is detested, abhorred by every tras American. Jeff Davis and the work which he did, the ends which he sought to accomplish, were entirely in the di- TCOtion of disrupting the Union, and his name cannot, therefore, be otherwise than ahnnned and detested by all loyal citizens. For this reason the newspapers of the South commit grave errors because they strive at keeping up the old rebel spirit.

It is indeed, a matter of regret, there is cause for severe condemnation, that the day after the graves of heroes, who fell to save the country, are decked with flowers, there should ba such ostentatious display over the bones of the man who more than any other single man BO many noble, precious lives to This act on the part of tho boast of their submission, makes our 'Memorial Day exercises almost a mockery. It would altogether, If it were not for the thousands of true, hoaest hearts who in all reverence and sincerity cover the graves of loved soldien with the bright garlands of spring. We should not say a word on this subject if the South manifested a nobler spirit. They need not bow to is not required of But they should at all times show a true, loyal spirit of devotion to the country. So long they teach their children that Jeff Davis and his confederates were in the right, their professions of loyally and patriotism are a sham, and sound like brass or a mere tinkling cymbal.

There be consistency. Christian men who set themselves in opposition and prevent an institution of this kind. I wish that the day might come in this city when we shall be permitted to enjoy snch a blessing." THE "Exposition Flyer" is a special train put on the New York Central railroad yesterday to carry passengers from New York to Chicago in the shortest possible time. The distance will be covered in twenty hours, which is four less than the fastest time heretofore made, and on the first trip made yesterday reached Chicago four minutes ahead of time. The ntmoit oare should be taken by the conductors of street oars when they croM railroad tracks in this city. The require that all cars come to a full and the conductor run ahead to see whether track is clear before be allows tho wtorman to start the car. So Car we tbir rule is observed, but it should be rigidly and strictly enforced. Only a few days ago a serious accident occurred in Buffalo from this-causo and yet the Rime rule is in force there. A Ltckftwmna train, running at a speed ol over twenty miles an hour, crashed into electric car and killed two persons and injured several.

The conductor had to run ahead for this one time to whether the track was clear and mod the neglect resulted fatally. Conductors of street, cars cannot afford to take such chances; there is too much involved. Then, too, we have an ordinance forbidding trains to be run through the city at a higher rate of speed than six or ht an hour, and we fear this is often violated. The safety of the public demands that these rules be ob- in every instance, for one neglect may prove disastrous. We are not aware of sny dereliction of duty on the part of any of the railroad employees, but it is to call special attention to the sub- jwtoocaaloaally.
