Near Corners IN REGULAR AICT AT 78 Colonel Gilbert Thought to Be Oldest Officer in It. Discussion In military journals seems to lead to the conclusion that Lieutenant-Colonel William Wallace Gilbert, of this city, not stationed at Houston, is tlie oldest officer in the regular army of this country. He was 7S years old on March 3d. Colonel Gilbert Is one of the few men now In active service entitled to wear tha service badge of the Civil "war, a strip of half blue, half -gray, and of these few he Is prplmbly the only one who fought all through the rebellion. He entered the army while a seuior-'at he University of Rochester early in '61 and for the last three years served as captain and regimental adjutant of the Nineteenth Regular Infantry iu the Army of the Cumberland.

He also wears te service badge of the Spanish-American war, of the Philippine insurrection and of the Philippine reconstruction, for lie served actively In "08 an.i throughout all thetrouble in the Philip- pines" and returned again for the reconstruction period. He was retired In 1904 be ause of age, but was again called to active duty last July 18th and was assigned to Houston, Texas. Lieutenant Colonel Gilbert was at one time professor of classics at the University of Rochester and for several yeare he was United States commissioner at Rochester. He resided at No. 20 Arnold park.
