MONDAY, JUNE 4, 2001 DAILY HERALD SECTION 4 PAGE 3 Wireless com sanies hit obstacles in launching high-speed services Associated Press all the glitches and delays overseas with cool new technologies for mobile phones, you may have hoped the kinks would be worked out in time for a smooth launch here. But so far it doesn't look very promising. Cingular Wireless, which had been planning to roll out the first of the new services in June, has postponed its U.S. introduction until late surh- i mer. And phone makers and wireless carriers, which love to show off their latest handsets well in advance, have paraded precious few in public.

Nevertheless, top wireless players insist they are on schedule to introduce advanced wireless services by year-end. Their main goal is to provide speedier connections for mobile phones so they can rece ve e-mail and Web content faster, or even be hooked up as a wireless computer modem. The first versions of these next-generation, or 3-G, services promise to provide download speeds five times faster than current wireless networks and phones. But new technologies usually come with bugs, and the wireless industry has been buzzing all year about difficulties with network upgrades and new handsets. "These are the most complex handsets that have ever been made short of some military equipment.

So you're trying to bring out super advanced technology at a consumer price," said Ray Jodoin, analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group. Companies want to roll out these services as soon as possible to get subscribers to use more minutes to offset the huge investment cellular companies have made to expand and upgrade their Perhaps that's why Cingular held out so long before scrapping plans to grab an early lead by introducing of next-generation services in California and Nevada. It wasn't until Thursday that Cingular acknowledged that the June launch was being delayed. Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS and Wireless have been more sketchy about their plans, but all three maintain they'll launch next- generation, services during the sec- ondhalfof2001. In the United States, Cingular and are adopting a next-generation technology known as GPRS, the standard that most European carriers are going with.

Verizon and Sprint are using the next-generation of CDMA, the dominant wireless format in the United States and Korea. i Roots: A hobby you never finish Continued from fbge 1 genealogical information," said Gehring, Ancestry.com product in charge of the site's databases. "Since we add new databases toViur subscription every day, a cus- torner's subscription becomes more valuable all the time." touts itself as the i Web's third largest paid-subscription Consumer Reports Online (operated by Consumers Union of the United States Inc.) and Wall StreetVurnal Interactive (operated by Dowfones Co. Ancestry.com currently has more than 350,000 paid subscriptions. Subscriptions-are MyFamily.com's main revenue stream, according to spokesman Rahn Rarnpton.

Site users pay $19.95 for a quarterly site subscription and $59.95 for an annual subscription. For their money, these users gain access to more than 1 billion names in about 3,000 genealogical databases. Starting June 15, Ancestry.com's annual subscription to the main databases will be $69.95. A separate subscription allows users to access original census images online instead of at a library. Ances- try.com's subscription includes the 1790,1880,1910 and 1920 census images.

The company's goal is to have the entire census collection (datasets for every 10 years from 1790 to 1920) online and indexed later this year. "Scans of original documents allow us to deliver a lot more genealogical data to our customers," Gehring said. "It's like broadband for genealogy. As faster transmission speeds and more storage space become available, we "Scans of original documents, allow us to deliver a lot more genealogical data to our customers." Jake Gehring, Ancestry.com can reliably deliver terabytes of image data to our users and stay within a cost structure that makes sense for our business." (A terabyte is a unit of measurement for physical data storage equal to 2 to the 40th power, or the equivalent of 1 billion business letters that would fill 150 miles of bookshelf space, according to Newton's Telecom Dictionary.) Ancestry.com began as a publishing company in 1984, expanding online in 1996. It publishes Ancestry magazine subscribers), Genealogical Computing quarterly journal, CD- ROM data collections and various books.

The number of recipients of the company's e-mail newsletter, the Ancestry Daily News, and its digest-form weekly companion has quadrupled in the past year to more than 1.2 million readers. "Every time we mention something in the Daily, it drives sales home, "said Daily News Editor Juliana Smith of Hammond, Ind. "The newsletter educates people on how to do genealogy. The more they learn, the more they stay on the site, because genealogy is a hobby that is never finished." Ancestry.com's greatest competition comes from Genealogy.com, pro- ducer of Family Tree Maker software. The company has changed hands several times since its creation in 1989 (concurrent with the software's birth).

best known through its History and Biography TV channels, completed its acquisition of Genealogy.com in February for an undisclosed sum. brings us a stability we haven't had before," said Chris Andersen, vice president of marketing. sees us as being an integral part of extending its Biography and History brands." Beginning in the third quarter, Ge- nealogy.com plans to begin promoting its Internet presence on television programs through ads and show sponsorships. One plan will integrate family history with the TV show Biography. On specific weeks, Genealogy.com will research and provide family trees of the celebrities and historical figures featured on Biography.

The approach with this campaign, as Andersen explained, is to make people say" to themselves, "This person has a great family story. I wonder what mine is." Andersen said Genealogy.com's revenue is balanced between software sales and its online and CD-ROM data projects, most notable of which is the 1900 census images and the index to that database that Andersen said will be completed by die end of May. Genealogy.com's World Family Tree is positioned as the largest user- contributed database online with 130 million names. Its access is limited to subscribers, who pay $19.99 per month peryearto search the names, which are submitted by site users.
