diet Hoff, the only southpaw John Ganzel has ever allowed to draw pay for any length of time since he took charge of the 'Rochester team in 1909, twirled magnificently against Providence yesterday afternoon at Baseball Park and resultantly to-day the Hustlers find themselves once again occupying the top rung of the pennant ladder. The score was 3 to 1, but Hoff, as did Hughes on Thursday, deserved credit for a shut out. Only one hit was registered off him and that didn't figure in the Providence run column. A two-base muff by Messenger put the Grays in a position to score after Hoff had passed a batter. It wa3 Hoff's inclination to wildness that made for the only drawback to an otherwise almost immaculate'exhibition of the twirling art.

HOFF DOESN'T NEED FIELDING SUPPORT. The southpaw did even better than Upham and Hughes had previously accomplished when each whiffed ten of their opponents by causing an even dozen Grays to strike out. Hoff in the last four innings whiffed two in each inning, and after the fourth inning he was so invincible that not one of his valiant supporters was credited with an assist. When he wasn't striking them out, Hoff wa3 making the Grays lift easy flies to the fielders, Platte, the only one not to do either, twice dribbling1 the ball to Pipp. TWICE HAVE THREE MEN STRANDED.
