14 14 MONEY RUSHES BACK TO BANKS AFTER HOLIDAY 61 Millions Added To Reserves In Week New York-(P)--Money clinked back into bank tills to the extent of $61,000,000 in the week ended Wedensday, Federal Reserve statements made public yesterday resealed. The inward flow of currency from circulation, expected at this time of the year as the holiday expansion is further curtailed, helped to boost the Federal Reserve member banks' excess reserves to $3,090,000,000, up 000 during the week. The rise since the low point just before Christmas now aggregates $390,000,000. The total of circulating currency $5,722,000,000. The rise latest, in excess reserves back toward the high of $3,310,000.000 reached in the second week of December was also promoted by a $14,000,000 lift in the monetary gold stock, and by the deposit of gold certificates by the Treasury with the reserve banks.

The deposit was more than specifically required by the incerasing gold supply. Statements of member banks in New York City showed money conditions there settling back into the more stable situation to be expected now that the year-end payments are over. Correspondent banks increased their deposits with the New York institutions by $56,000,000, probably reflecting a return to the money market of funds which had been taken home for annual statement "dressing," and necessity of finding employment. for growing deposits through the country. Loans and investments of the New York banks increased 000 in the week and other items showed similarly narrow changes.
