A PrrArrTntG City Hew Yohk Rixgs nr Nkw Jerskt Tmt Doo Show Fanciers-Sib Walter Scott's Htvs or Doos ROS IKKJ Ro U8SE AC Lo OF Dots How Moset is Madk. Ccrretpondciice of the lmocrat and New York, April 3, ISTfl. On the first ot the month the city of defaulted on its interest to the amount of 10, OOO and is now oonfiidered bankrupt. It be aaid that it is to a large degree ty iiew York influence. When the place wan merely Elisabeth town and under Jersey rule, it waa noted for solid wealth.

The rapid advance of our tmburban towns and their headlong irjeream of debt is due to the introduction of metropolitan cutstoms. inchidmg the habit of speculation. The entire district called 44 thirty miles from New York, which once wan a scene of rural prosperity, now afflicted with half-built villages and overgrown towns, ail encumbered with debt. Almost every owner wants to sell, but taxes and improvement are so high, that piirrhaaers are not to be found. When ever one diiOTAses the advantages of such a place, the first thing favorable to be mentioned is 4 that it in so near New York.

1 So near indeed, it may be replied that New York spe-iilation has proved ruinoiw. Every village Lias its ring patterned after metropolitan fraud. Elisabeth is a sad Ulustration of the New York system. It has been plundered by speculators. There is one reason why suburlian pronerty is now avoided as much an possible and the elevated road will lead multitudes to return to this city.

It will require a quarter century for Elizabeth and many other towns to recover from the damage inflicted by New York aliarperm, THE DOO SHOW. Gilmore's Garden has ceased to be the scene of a pedestrian mil is now under re-Iteration for a dog show. The last efforts of the women walkers were a painful ispectacle and such a contest should never again be encouraged. It was not a pecuniary success and this indeed could hardly have U.en expe-tl. The ds-g show, however, will no doubt be a source of profit.

The prenent tran.sformat.on of the place recalls the fact that Uiltnore's gnnlen has wittwssed a greater variety of changes than any other structure in America. It was first a railway depot, after which it became distinguished as Haruum's hippodrome. Then it was selected as the most fitting place for the Moody and Sankey effort, where thousands gathered in solemn worship. It was also the scene of the Hebrew fair, whose success as of so marked a character. Then it was turned into a winter garden and afterwards it contained the 1 Cfjngress of beauty.

It has lecn tlie favorite spot fur athletic contexts of highly exciting cliaracter, then it was a skating rink and also the st-ene of a rat fair. It has witnesstd the marvelous pageantry of the Arion masquerade and also a grand musical performauce, and now xuee i the dog show, the only from which music is riaturallv de- i barred. What a strange variety of purpose Speaking of the coming fair. it may at lirst be tnirprtsing to s.e the enthusiasm of some dg fam-ern. yet when one realises the tJie power wnicn thw animal exercises over human race, it is not ho much a matter of wonder.

A man who cannot love a dog would be by some considered deficient, almost in a moral point of view. OTHER CAMXr. FEATt'RE. Speaking of dogs one is reminded 'of a cor-re ticn which a modern tragedian i Henry. Ir-vingi has made in SlmktwpeAre.

When Irving visited the place he saw Boatswain and mentions him with admiration in his sketch of the ably. In connection with this subject, it may be added that Koossoau was to a marked degree subject to the influence of his favorite dog, Hume said the latter hail great contnil over his master, ''whose atUstion for it was beyond all ex-prewion or conception." Another instance of tl.e love of uien of geuius for such animals was foumi in Cowiier's sT-ianiel "Heau. Pope had a canine favorite called Bounce, 1 whose he uitHirned with deep telernesa. It as in this caunecU(n that he said, "History is more full of examplea of the fidelity of dons than of frieniUt. Byron said: How many there are Uiat will sym-Iathise with Uii Mntuneut.

To bring thse rertectiou tt) a close it may be said that the exhibition of a thousand vanetiea of (bigs at the approaching show will prove one of the great attraction of Uus svason. rOCW ANO BATH, Speakirg on this subject I am reminded tliat rat terriers are now in constant deratnd by reason of Uie increasing appetite for cat baiting. K. Sluuif'ird. UlM-onaln Trout nlture. To the editor of the Democrat and Llironicte: Sib: This season the state of Wisconsin hatched about BOO, 000 brook trout fry, and they have lost a large percentage of them, it is claimed, hv the superintendent, Mr. Welsher.

I hope the i-oninmnny win not censure Mr. Welsher too harshly until they have heard both sides. He lias not had much experience in handling young brook trout and has had to take the advice of others. There are some of the most successful trout farmers in the state of Wisconsin that there are In any country. I told Mr.

Welsher that he bad better see them, and If he could get their manner of treating the young fljJi, that he had better adapt their practice rather than ours, as the practice in ona locality may fail tn another. He saw the parties that were succewful trout growers, and supposed he had got their manner of treatment of the uuiilS try anu iaueo. Mr. elsher knows how to take salmon trout and white Ash spawn and hatch and raise the young as well as any man in the country. I believe he is the only man that has ever raised white fish, fed artificially, until they were two years old.

I know he is one of the shrewdest and closest observers that has ever been in mv employ. He was with me for several years and was one of the best men 1 ever had. If he had followed my practice I think he would not have had any trouble, as what we told him would have lieen to the best of our knowledge. Uf all the kinds of ash that fish culturists have yet undertaken to raise, brook trout are tlie hanlest. Kearly all writers on the subject say that they are easy to raise.

I say they are not. It is a very difficult thing to do. There are not ten suoi-essf ill trout grow -ers in the country. Krrn 0 UKCx. liochestcr, April 4.

Ileallnr Hallroad Cars. New York Heral One great problem which the railroad com -panes have been endeavoring for years to solve la the question of heating the tars with the greatest mfety and least discomfort passengers. The starve at either end of each car has not only failed entirely to supply the want, but in cases of disaster has proved fatal. Mr. MiCrea, division superintendent of the Kew York and Philadelphia branch of the Pennsylvania railroad, and several sentlemen interetfed in railroad matters and memtier of the preaa of this city and Philadelphia, yesterday made a short excursion to test a new system of beating.

The plan is briefly this:" A small boiler and engine are placed in one end of the baggage car attached to ea train, and occupy a spas of not more than six feet of the length of the car, leavinz ample room for baggage purposes. Along the sides of the cars run ouutcd pipes alout two inches in diameter, and with stretch at each end sufficient to allow f.ir the strain on the plat forms on starting or at curvea. The pipe ia so arranged as to form a continuous circuit around tl.e entire train, and tlie engine Is set to w.rrk hot water Is pumtied through the tubes, passing along one aide of the train and returning hy the other to the boiler. The pipe are hy w.sklen lnm, under which they ate attached in each car to cubical wooden boxes with valves attached, through which a constant stream of fresh air can enter whichever way the train Is thus combining heat and thorough veutilation tltruugh the entire ear in an equal degree. nlrreach passenger seat ia a nemi tuba of ccrrugated iron, with a regulator at tie.

THB KERB WH.U The deciiqon of the courts in tli is matter is a rrefih proof of the danger of rrortponing beneficence until after death. Every man wno desires to accomplish any benefit of the should do it himself and thug become his own executor, instead of leaving it to th pont-hnmoos uncertainty. How often we see the elaborate plans of benevolence, which may adorn a will set aside hv the mimt.i. ztetA Such was the case in the will of the late Henry A.

Kerr, concerning whom a number of curious point may be given. He was for instance the -icfae(t grocer this city ever contained, having left an estate estimated at a million. Never before has such a fortune been achieved by the most successful of this branch of trade. For many years I knew Kerr as a Broadway shopkeeper, but how little did I dream of his immense wealth. This shows how rapidly men mar get rich when they have got into the proper track and also how secret the stream of wealth, may be kept from the public eye.

No one who knew Henry Kerr as a plodding grocer, imagined him to be worth more than other leading men in the trade. He was. however, not nn)r richer than any of the jobt-ers aud importers of whom he made his purchases, Imt also richer than any of his customers. He had a good run of trade, lived economically and invested his profits in real estate and in other productive investments, which in the course of a long life made the retail grocer a millionaire. in the same secret manner wealth flowed iito the hands of John Jacob Astor, who was really worth a million before any one supposed that he was in any more than a well-to-do condition.

HOW sKWET Iff HA OK. This is done by getting into the channels of weaitn. home men make monev out of friendship. Shak.speare. for inatance.

so won tlie admiration of the Earl of Soutiiunpton. inat me laiter mane mm a present of what really was a great fortune. To go further back, it is said that the Poet Horace received of Ma-cenaa, his wealthy patron, a present of his Sabine farm, If the reader thinks uiese sMHements overarawn, let mm turn to the hKtory of Judge Hilton. This man obtained his immense wealth, aa the premium of friendship. He cottoned up to a rich merchant with such suo-em as to obtain a legacy of 11,000,000.

this being the targest bequest on record ever made for mere friendship. Soon after Stewart's death Hilton made an exchange with Mrs. Ktewart by which he obtained the entire stock of goods and other personal property belonging to the late merchant priDce, to the value of $8,000,000. This is rather hand) me pay and shows how profitable this paine can be made. If you can thus play into the affections of a rich man then it is im-partant to iret into the channels of wealth as they may be found either in commercial or pmfessional life.

Many a man has struggled years to attain sucress and has been almost ready to alndon hope when some lucky chance has tfaitwn him into a train of circumstances which led to wealth. Grant Thor-burn for imtance found him ruined as a nail maker when cut nails were introduced. One day a stranger pniriased of him a rose which be was carrying hom and thus led him to become a florist in which business he made a fortune. One of our richest law firms (Dav I Lford) was fourided under similar adversity. lantel Lord a anindastrirmsvonnelaw-yer.

but bis profession hanlly supported him. On reachiiig forty he seriously thought of alndoning the struggle for siicoess in Newr York, but before doing this he counselled with a veteran member of the bench. The latter urged him to remain, and the result was that Mxn aft-rward Uie way of patronage opened and the once struggling lawyer became a man of great wealth. He waa afterward John Jacob Alitor 's lawyer and drew his will, and the firm hich he fiunded is still empkyed by the Astor family. It was in the office of Day Ijord, izhteed, that Waldorf Astor pursued ou legal rtuuiee.

OTHER TSTMtCX. Our best men often struggle in poverty till their destiny is turned by some unexpet-ted incident. Tlie man who built the New York hotel began life very poor and was employed on a brig which sailed to the AVest Indies. One day an old Vuaker who saw th cargo put imo i lie noia, noticed some vacant space and made the remark, Friend, fill that witfa brooms and I will pay thee all thee lonea. The advice was taken, and the venture was so that it hd to a traJiV in wnich Hi-k.

in Field became noted for wealth. Iu this manner the shipi-r of brooms becanw the builder of the New York hotel, which is worth a million even in these dull times. How men are to get into the lej-t channels is a question which cannot he answered here. It implies proper elements of character, which may be develop, rnto ac-efw but it may be said In ncluiUon that until a man make his way into some such channel as above referred to bemnv Uat around the metroitolis all his life and "iCT the ttan MAf FINANtlAli AND tX3lUCClAX. He brought suit to recover damages in the amount of 10, 000. The case was flnalJy tried in the supreme court circuit.
