Bill Sye In the Laramie Boomerang. hie of the peculiarities of the latest United States style of feeding the noble red man, is tlie Tact inat ne is given Government rations, and at the same time appropriations are made which are supposed to maintain him. Some times a wild Indian, who don't know much about groceries and how to prepare them for food, comes in and draws his regular soldier rations this way.

tor Instance, up In the fcittuig juii country, a while ago, an Indian came in from the war-path who had never seen any of the pale faced style of food, and drew his rations. He made a light meal of nnground coffee the nrstuay, and as he overate and the coffee sweUed in him, he had diffi culty in buttoning his jiants around the pain he had on hand. He felt very unhappy for a-day or two, out laid it -to uie fact that he hadn't ex ercised much, and the consequent ennui and indigestion resulted therefrom. As soon as he succeeded hi getting the interior department quieted down a little be tackled his ration of caudles. These he decided to partjjgil in order to avoid trouble from indigestion.

The dish wts not so much of a glittering success as he had anticipated, aud as he remorsely picked the candle wicking out of his teeth with a teut pin, he made some remarks which grated harsluy on tlie asthetie ears of those who stood near. He then tried a meal of yeast powiier with vinegar. He ate the yeast pow- dur, and then took a pint of extremely potent vinegar to wash it down. At first there was a feeling of glad surprise in his stomach, wmen rapiuiy gave place to unavailing re morse. A can or yeast powder in an Indian's midst don't seem to be prepared for a pint of vinegar, and the result of such an unfortunate circumstance is not gratifying.

tvery little wr.ue a look or pain would come overtliefcaturesof the noble child of the forest and then he would jump about seventeen feet and trv to kick a cloud nut of tlie sky. Then he would sit down and thiuk over his past life. It took about a week for him to get back to where he (tared to get np another meal for himself. Then he fricasseed a couple of pounds of laundry soap awl ate that. Soap is all right for external purposes or for treat ing a pair of soiled socks, but it does not as similatewith the gastric juice readily, and those who have tried it as a rehsh do not seem to thirk that it will ever arrive at any degree of prominence as an article of diet.

That is why this untutored child of nature swore, He had never received the benefits of early training profanity, and his language, there fore, was disconnected and rambling but when we consilor that he was ignorant of our language, and that every little while he had to stop aud hold on to his digester with both hands and dig great holes in the earth with his toes, the remarks didn't geetn alto eether out of place or irrelevant. hen gallon or so of agitated baking powder and vinegar is singing its tittle song in the inner most recesses of an Indian, and this has been followed by a treatment of laundry soap, the student of human nature can find a wide field for observation in that locality. The earnest and occupied look, the troubled expression of uie countenance, louoweu try tne quick, nerv ous twitching of the muscles of the face, and then the swelling up and tta bursting of the suspender button, the deep-drawn sigj and the smothered cuss-word, all betoken the gatrio agitation guiug on within. This is- why an Indian prefers a link of bologna sau sage and a two-year-old dog to the high priced groceries so common to our modern civilisation. BKHEK THAN HE THOVGHT.

The Financial Methods of the Late Colonel John W. Forney. Philadelphia Press. Colonel Forney was supremely and curiously indifferent in money matters. One instance that strongly illustrates this trait has caused many a hearty lauglijiimong his acquaintances.

Despite the advice of many friends, among them lierce Butler, the husband of Fanny Kemble, he determined to invest a large sum of money in a new enterprise a rice-cleaning machine or something of that sort. He felt firsncially able to do this by rvoson of having made a tale of some Lake Knperior property. He filled out a check on the Girard bank for a very large amount, and intrusted it to a friend for collection. When the piece of paper was presented to th- paying -teller, tliat official first scratched his chin and then went to see the prrsidi nt of tlie tank, who at that time was Mr. Bokcr.

father of Hon. George H. Boker. Mr. came forward smilingly, aud said that while Colonel Forney had quite a large sum of mcney on deposit in the bank, the amount to his credit was not ermal to that called for by the check; but still, if Colonel Forney would step down to the bonk himself the check would he honored.

The friend returned to tlie Press otlice in anindiguant frame of mind and told Colonel FdrneJ- tluit he had made him the beaier of a check that hod been dishonored, tor the reason that there were not sufli-hnt funds in the bank. Some mistake, sir some mistake, re -p! ied the big- hearted editor. I have much more than that amount on deposit in the bank, and he uttered the name of a familiar depository other than the Girard. But I did not go there, replied the friend in amazement. The check is drawn on the Girard bank.

My my 1' said Colonel Forney, "did I make such a silly mistake I Why, 1 have not a penny in the Girard bank. I did not intend to send there, 1 Oh, yes you have a large deposit in the Girard bank, answered his friend uui it was not sufficient to meet this check. mistaKe, sir a mistake, replied the co onel 'I have not a penny there. A visit was made to tlie Girard bank, however, and Cciouel Forney found, to his aruasement; that he was much richer than he thought. In the same Way, when the Longaeres' bank, in Lancaster, failed, Colonel Forney found that he hai a long-time deposit there that he had Known nothing of.

It was this indiirurenee in money matters that exemplified probably as weU as any other trait the lavish disposition oi uie man now mourned lavish not only with "osuui, uui im me more precious tieas ore of his heart, THE TENACITY OF FIUHTIMi DOC1S A Ncnbursh Dos; Death rlp on the noae oi tne nog- Who hipped llin. New York Hun. Tieo. S3. For some time past the owner in this city of a brtndle bull terrier, three years old, named Jack, has offered to match him against any dog in a pit.

The dogs were put in the pit at o'clock The referee was a well-known New York sporting man, who has not missed a dogfight for th. last twenty years. Jack was the favorite at fifty to forty, but during the first half hour of battle Samuel J.

Tilden showed such gameneas and cleverness that the betting became even. It, however, gradually became apparent that Jack was the stronger and most wary fighter. He stopped Tilden' rushes at every point, catching him by th ear, throat and nose, and dashing him ou the floor of Uie pit, evidently determined to strangle him to death. Although Tilden was a game dog, he had no chanco. Finally Jack caught TiUk-n's under jaw in his month and crunched it, Tilden howling with pain and UKer.

It was- thought, at this stage, that Tiki had begun to weaken. Jack, got a bold on Tilden's throati and dragged hi ra around tlie pit. It looked as if Tilden was dyjng, ami the crowd Defame clamorous that he should be taken out of tha pit, when suddenly th old dog snapped hold of Jack' nose, end, cleDchlng his teeth, held on for full fifteen minutes, while Jack struggled desperately to get away. A soon as be got loose, Jack sprang at Tilden again and dragged him about the pit.

At the end of on hour and fifty minutes the dogs were parted and sponged. It was Jack's turn to cross the pit, and he rushed over into Tilden 'a corner with alacrity. An other turn, was had at seven minutes. It was Tilden time to ctm to the scratch. He tried to go across the pit, but on reaching the middle, fell, showing that' he was game, but weak from loss of mood and severe punishment.

The referee then decided that Jack had won tlie fight. Time of battle, two hours and three minutes. Good judges consider this one of the best-contested dog tights thai ever took place in this country. It is expected thit Tilden will die. tOJlKM AT THE POLLS.

23. The school meeting in this town was very exciting, the contest for trustee being between Alvin House and Lydua bramer.
