SCHOOL COOKS, E5LAKK BOO! vT.TIi A Ckaace. rVitwrday we had be pleure of taking a troll through the various departments of one of the most extensive retail crVothing estab-hshment in Western York. We refer to Bteinfeld' popular one-price clothiog boos, mnaber 8 Main street bridge.

This bowse baa been located at number 5 Main street bridge for several year past bat owing to the rapid increase of trade, was forced to leave the old stand and seek larger quarters. The store it now occupies, number 8 Main street bridge, three doors above the old location, is by far the largest and best arranged clothing boose in this city, and it will well repay any person for the trouble to take a walk through tbe bmlding. The third story is devoted' exclusively to man acturin g. Here is tbe catting room, where vast quantities of cloth, cassimerea, etc, etc are cut into garment for men, youth, boys and children, and where a large force of strictly first -cistss cutters are constantly employed. This room preaentaan aspect of busy activity, and to one not conversant with tbe extent of the trade rjossessed by this popular clothing house, it would seem irupoetsibi to dispose of the immense quantities of goods daily cut and trimmed in this department.

To "make np these goods require a large number of tailors and tailor-esfiea, and we were assured by the gentlemanly foreman in that tha hands employed by this house could be counted by the hundreds. The room is well arranged. Tee Bailrwa Crtevaae. When we call attention to the fact that for at Wart a month past trains carrying paw-n 1 gri and mail have been detained daily for aa tuireasonable time, at both tbe street and East Bocbeater yard of the 5 York Central and Hudson River railroad company in this city, we are aatieSed that it will not appear Dew to thousands of passengers, including many of our own citizens who have arrived here during that period from the East. Tbe cause of this detention, which ha sow continued so long a to assume tbe form of a grievance that calls for speedy redress, a tbe accumulation of freight cars on the tracks at the points we have named.

But why those car or train are allowed to so obstruct tbe tracks ia not plain. Tbe railroad company are, no doubt, prepared to furnish reasons in abundance. It will probably be said, for instance, that tbe recent floods which in some instances have resulted so disastrously are the main cause. But in fact this state of affairs antedates the first spring freshet by some weeks. The traveling and business public bore tbe infliction with patience until that commendable quality ceased to be a virtue and now the business and traveling public unite in one loud call for reform.

For ourselves we may say that in common with ethers we have much to complain of. have on several oe-caacri lately been deprived of our Tork paper which we should receive between 9 10 o'clock, nn-til midnight or even later, thus causing us amount of inconvenience that the public can r-JTCT armreciate. The stat of affairs that we have depicted is not at known to officials of the road who ought to be able to effect a reform. Superintendent Tillinghast and Ipham, we are informed, were both victims, some time since, of mismanagement on i unary-aiACS-Io Ras CVarlrwwa. Atrf! 1, rr l't Sir.

i A a -i fsjnc we have learned all the fact tbe ease of George Clark, who died at hi real -iVty-e cumber TO Cluton street, oa fSetorday, from tbe effenta of a Arim of laudanum ad-mintotTed by hJmself, we are at a low. o-irewm thmigh tt be, to distinguish the affair by any other term than that which we have placed at tbe bead of this article a eaae of involuntary saicidia. The fact aa we have them from Coroner Harder, who Investigated tbe matter are follow Clark, a mamfd man. tbe father of one hi 1.1, and about forty-four years of age, bad been laboring under aome mental drngetr-n for aix months past partly tbe reeult, aa we learn, of religkxa excitement. He had been beard to say that he was too great a sinner to leave him any hop that be could be saved, and that be would throw himself in the Genesee but for tbe fact that such an a would certainly result in his perdition.

Buajueea troubl then came, and had tbe effect to increase hi derangement, aud, to crown all, tbe unfortunate man wba attacked a few days since with severe sickness. Cm Friday he sent an acquaintance to procure aa ounce of laudanum as a remedy for the dtseaae diarrhea, with instructions to learn bow many drops he might take with sareCJ. lue party woo oungni the drrsAj was told by the cWk at tbe store where he called that he mifcbt bike ten d-r-ps. His tricZ, perhaps frorn an appreher.scr; tLat be mlgat Dive mistaken the elfrk, told him that he should take no more than five; but at 5 o'clock on Saturday morning Clark arose and took the entire ounce at a single dose. So sooner had he taken it however, than he became 'alarmed, and told his nephew, who in turn b.ld hia wife.

Clark himself, ran for some of hia neighbors, and in an excited way called for some mustard, which wa furnished him, and he swallowed some of it eagerly, expecting, a is supposed, that it would operate as an emetic Ir. Jone was then called aa soon aa possible, and administered remedies suitable to such a case. AB effort, however, proved unavailing and Clark died between five and six o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Coroner Harder was called and after learning the fact as we have stated them, and at the urgent solicitation of the family of tbe victim, deemed it unnecessary to hold an in jufst. 1 The Ola aa the CeaariL Eleven members of the old board of aldermen retire from office to-day, the three others whose terms of office expire having been re-elected.

An Important change will thus take place in the permonnal of the council. We are free to say Jit look like a change for tbe better. Even in those cases where good and capable men withdraw, they are displaced very generally by others who promise to be their equala in everything save experience. This, time will supply. In the representation from the first ward there is no change, and none was needed.

Mr. Aldridge was re-elected without opposition a compliment to his character and capacity which it would have been 13 than justice to withhold. As president of tbe board, he filled the chair with dignity, his rulings have been impartial, and we remember no case in which an attempt to appeal from his decision was successful, and but one case in which an appeal was even moved. The alderman is a practical bturineaa man, possessed of strong common sense, tact and thorough familiarity with city affairs. In the second ward Aid.

Gould is superseded by A. H. Cushman. The latter wrong politically, but in every other point of view, the right sort of man for the position he now assume. His integrity may be relied upon implicitly, and af ter making all due allowance for the dangers of official life, we think it safe to say that hia record two years hence will be as cleanjas it is now.

We regret exceedingly the retirement of that active, efficient councilman from th; third, Aid. Pond. We never heard him say or do a foolish thing in the board, much less a questionable one. It may be said that tha first observation could apply to a man who wa incapable of arguing a subject or of a decided opinion. We need not say that Aid.

Pond, however rarely he took up the time of the board with long speeches, waa always ready to give an intelligent, clear and cogent reason for his actions, and that aa a member of committees be did his full share of the work of the board. In every measure which came up, he took an independent stand and voted according to hia judgment whether left in a minority or not. He has striven hard for economy in expenditures and therein also shown that he had the interest of the city at heart. From the fourth ward, we welcome to the hoard, George Hereberger. Our estimate of his character waa given on his retirement from the board last year.

Hia experience, good sense and attention to the dutiea of the Iiu win make him a valuable member of tbe new board. In the fifth. Aid. Caring gives place to Col onel; Briiiker, a gentlemen whoe character is wel) known to need praiae at our hands. The worst we can aay of Aid.

Brinker is that he is a Democrat. It is hardly necessary to add that his only object will be the welfare of the city tha interest of the tax -payer. Aid. Stern like Aid. Aldridge, ha been re- and rightly.

Although he finds it difficult to express exactly what he is anxious to say, in Fjiglisn, a fact which evidently annoys him excessively, his boaest purpose and kindly nature show themselves so unmistakably tit At be is always listened to with marked respect. Aa chairman of the finance committee, he has filled a moat important poAitk'B and filled it ably. There is not an alderman in the twenty-eight, who is, and to be, held in higher esteem. From the seventh, William G. Anthony takes tbe place of Aid.

MeConnell, and from the eighth. D. M. Anthony supersedos Aid. Craig.

Botntbenew aldermen are reputa ble cituteu and win aid giving character to tie board. From the ninth, William Satin take the place of Aid. boiye. The souud judgment and guod mum of the retiring alderman are acknowledged even by hia ene-tniea, and the city can ill aff ord to lose oi9- i3la of his capacity. Hi successor ta, however, a justly popular man, and miles we are greatly mistaken, will not lose th respect of his fellow citizen by his future atiua aa aldenuan.

Snot of Lh new aldermea eaa taka precedence in character of John Bower, who su-pertwae Aid. Btape from the tenth. Mr, Bower ia one of tha claa of sua who we have always contended ought to be rhrim alderman men whoae private life, buainaa habit, age and experience insure that wisdom and care in managing municipal affairs which have been wanting of late in the pro-portRffl they were so greatly needed. From th eleventh, AM. Gerling niAkes way for George FWkenstein.

The latter is a successful business nun, respected by the peofile of ms ward. It can hardly lose by a change of representative. From Uw twelfth. Aid. WhHmore is returned to the board, a deaervad to be, and from tbe thirteenth Jacob Margrander takr tha pUce of Aid.

Stada. Mr. Mar-grander well tttongbt of, and we believ him to be worthy of the good opinion in which be ia htid. We are sorry thai Aid Aikenhead retire a the representative in tha emaed from the fourteenth. It is, however, aausfactory to know that Meoeeded by so active and reputable a euiaen a V.

In reflecting on your method of doing good in this way it seems almost strange that it should not" be done in every city. It takes the people of Rochester, however, to originate and act, as I well know. At a meeting of this association held April 5th, 1673, the following resolution wa adopted: Resolved. That, admitting the importance of an abundant supply of water for the city, the great expense of bringing it from Hemlock lake will impose a burden of taxation wnich ww tar outweign tne aa vantages to oe gained thereby. That while it win heavily tax the sections remote from the center without any equivalent benefit, the general effect will 'be to discourage the infiux of population and capital, reduce tiie profit of labor, depress enterprise, commerce and manufactures, and drive them out to leas taxed and more favorable places. That in view of the fact that our city taxes have increased four-fold in the last ten years, and that the debt proposed by the water commissioners will (with the other new debt already authorised) add, for interest alone, one-half to the city taxation. We earnestly protest acainst such an enormous addition to our public burdens.

Passing down one flight of stairs to the next floor, and we find ourselves in thee- jobbing room, or wholesale department. Here is to be seen a stock of all kinds of clothing, which, in point of numbers and neatness of arrangement, surpasses anything of the kind wa have ever witnessed the room is well adapted for tbe purpose intended, being large, light and nicely fun, 1b lied, and present an appearance which J00 credit on the gentleman in charge of this depaa the store other stairway, and we are in the retail department. We would tTUungij linger here, and give an extended description of this truly magnificent establishment, but have only space for a passing glance. We see before us a large, well-lighted and beautifully arranged store-room, completely filled with all the different varieties of clothing for men, youth, boys and children, and furnished in a manner which for neatness and elegance cannot be surpassed; and it must really be a pleasure to deal in such an apartment. Here every garment is marked in plain figures, and it is no trouble whatever to make a selection.

The one-price system strictly prevails, and there is no bantering or overcharging under any circumstances. We trust that they will see to it that from whatever cause this state of affairs arises whether from inefficient management at the yards, a lack of tracks, or the like that a remedy will be promptly applied. Before concluding, we "would observe that since tbe engineers of freight trains are detained with their trains those of passenger trains in a lesser "degree they are of course deprived of that time for rest which, to secure efficiency and vigilance, is perhaps more necessary to them than to men of any other calling.

The idea may not appear striking at a glance, but some terrible accident would arouse the public to the fact that it win not answer to keep an engineer on the dack of his engine at a time when he should be recruiting the energies so essential to the proper discharge of his arduous duties. Bewtae freas Raia. Friday evening an unfortunate and misguided young girl was snatched from the jaws of a moral death, and unquestionably an early physical death, by Captain Sullivan and Detective Hughe of the police force. We will not atop to moralise on the perverted tenden cies of the growing generation. Such moral ising seems to be of no benefit, and only ac tive measures, tike those in the present instance will be of any service.

Two weeks ago a young girl, Ifellie Keef only fifteen years of age, sought and obtained admission to a house of kept by Jennie Doty, there to become one of those vile creatore who pan der to the unlawful passion they seek by ev ery means to arouse, one is a neat, tidy-looking girL of so small stature as to resemble only a child. Her father, a respectable, hard -working man, learning where she was, called at the police office Friday to obtain the assistance of law in taking her from the vile den. The mission was entrusted to the officers stated, and calling at the house in the evening they arrested and brought her to the station. Strange to say she waa unwilling to leave her life of disgrace, and became so excited over being forced to do so that she went into a fit and hysterica. Her father is deeply pained by the strange conduct of this erring child, and will meet with the sympathies of all in hi effort to reclaim her to the paths of virtue.

With reference to the woman who keeps the den of infamy, no language would be too strong to be used in condemning her. Any woman who will knowingly offer temptation to a young girL beneath the eyes of parents, brothers and sisters, and provide her with means of self degradation, needs to be visited with the greatest indignation of the community. Hhe ought to be driven from the city, bag and baggage. A ISerieae le. On Saturday evening, William Richardson, who resides on East avenue, met with a seri ous loss in the form of a pocket-book contain ing t-jO.

He had called at the store of ohn C. Koesterer, corner of Andrews and Clinton streets to make some purchase and having transacted his business departed, but discovered some time afterward that he had, as he supposes, left hi pocket-book and its content in the store behind him. Ha, however, failed to find it there and was unable to anything about it. The matter was brought to the notice of Captain Sullivan and be, together with Roundsmen Rowarth and McConnick, proceeded to investigate. They found that a German and two Frenchmen were in the store at the same time with Mr.

RichardVm. The former, it was supposed, was the owner of a cart which was left the store containing some cut clothing bearing the mark, as was afterwards learned, of M'DoneU, Burrell and a quantity of sausage. The clue afforded by these fact waa followed, but the owner of the cart and content proved to be a person who wa able to give a satisfactory account of himself. Tbe whereabout of tbe two Frenchmen referred to is as yet unknown, and whether innocent or guilty the officers are very des-row of finding them.
