Wit Destrored Chicawe To the Eiritor of the Democrst snd Ch-o-Icle: Aixording to the reports in your issue of this morning, tbe great Calamity was the common topic in our pulpits last Sunday. In perusing those reports, I noticed that one point of vital iotercAt was loft by most of the speakers in considerable, obscurity, while ore, at least, presented it in a positively erroneous light.

Allow me, therefore, a very brief space to add a word on the point. It is announced from Heaven, we will suppose, that tbat populous city shall become a heap, aod its pleasant dwellings and magnificent warehouses an extended ruin. And bow is this to be brought about If God shall destroy it, mut it not be by a miracle I Its streets are spacious and well laid out; it buildings reany of them are of marble and iron. Its area is intersected by thiee navigable streams, forming a junction in its very centre; one entire side lies contiguous to tbe lake; and in addition to all this, it i well supplied with water by artificial means in all it parte. It ha at eom-njaod a corps of firemen and also of police, well diilVd and active, together wit'u every other means of safety that modern ingenuity baa bees able to invent.

So fax aa human sagacity can diacovrr, no city ean be more favorably situated, or in any way better provided against ar. extended conflagration. But what takes plaoe' Xo rain ha fallen for many days. A great ranfaetion of the air is produced by beat in tbat region of country tbe cold air rushea in to fill the Tacuuni; creating a strong wind from the south-west. Just while this prevails, in the south-west quarter of tbe city a little lamp is upset in the otit-house, and eeta it on fire.

The wind eom-tunnicate the flame to adjoining buildings, ard these to other still, and in apite of all bums efforts tbe devouring ware ia driven diagonally in a north-east direction, tbrongh tbe very heart of tbe city till it has reached the opposite side lea Ting behind it $15), 053, 0 JO of property in ashes, 80, 0 JO of the inhabitant houseloss, and hundreds of blackened corpse; among tbe smouldering ruins. Awful aod overwhelming visitation Had an accredited prophet announced it tbe day before, who would have believed it probable Though no miracle has been wrought, jet we say and deliberately say, "Tbe Lord bath done this tbiDg. Is there anything unreasonable or unscientific in this. Not lit all. While every agent and element concerned in the eitastra-plie acted freely aecordiog to the established law of nature, we can readily conceive that the all-wise and omnipotent Gad had every link in this long aud complicated chain a "just cd with a special view of bringing it abjnt.

Lock at the links for a moment: tbe went her must be dry, tbe utmcephrric ratification must take place, and take place in a particular region tbe fire mutit originate io just the quarter of the city it did the wind must blow, and blow from a cer tain direction and with aurb a force; now, any one of these being wanting, or being essentially different, the terrible sweep of dostruetion would not bare taken place. All are necessary links. It is in this rmrurrtnee, adjustment and eosnofsurtson of natural law that we are to look for tbe hand of God it ia Acre the divine Providence holds empire fortbeacoomplishment of ita special purposes toward individuals and toward communities it is from (Ais bidden and and inexhaustible mine of combination tbat the governor of tbe world draw, with unfathomable skill, the materials of his dispensation to ward every living man. To talk of this fearful event, involving tbe highest interest of hn- munity, a bring brought about by tbe laws of nature merely, is to talk nonsense, and to make an assertion tbat receive no aupport either from science or the bible. What is a law of nature! Not an agent, or an efficient cause.

A law, of whatever nature, ean effect nothing. I he law of nature possess no inherent intrlli-gtnr or inherent power. The intelligence and tbe power are external of these laws; the law are bwt expression, uniform expression of that intekigeuee and power. Laws cannot in any intelligible sense be regarded as primary or independent causes of tbe phenomena of the physical world. A law of nature conducts us straightway to an agent bsr'ad that law and to a being above that nature to ita author, it God.

True science, therefore, no less than inspired scripture, teaches us to believe implicitlv that the band ot the almighty is concerned in eTcry event among men from the fall of a spar row to tbe crash of an empire, i "The very hairs of your bead are all numbered. B. w. at. A 1-KTKiriKi) rarcacn.

There is building in tbe village of Mum ford, in this county, a church, for tbe Preabytertaa organisation of tbe place, which will be a decided curiosity as well as a beautifnl place of worship.
