A Thoroughly Artistic Performance of 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

It was an audience worthy of aiodjeska which filled every seat in the Opera House last evening, to witness the revival of The Two Gentlemen of Verona which the great artist has essayed this season. This play is cue which has gone almost out of vogue since the development of the star system and those who saw last evening's production can well understand the reason. Those who went, therefore, simply to see Modjeska, may have been somewuat disappointed. Those wno went to see one of Shakespeare's best productions, worthily rendered, had their highest anticipations more than equaled by the thoroughly satisfactory and complete rendition which it received. But the part of Julia, which is taken br Mine. Modjeska in "The Two Gentlemen, is not an ungrate ful one and though it gave her but little opportunity to display the genius and passion which she so eminently possesses, j-et here and there, in delicate touches, she gave plain indications of the powers so skillfully held in reserve and subordinated to the artistic perfection of the noble whole. Her reading of the letter from Proteus in the second scene was so delicious, so real, a portrayal of wayward and inconsistent love, that in itself it formed more than recompense for braving the inclement evening.

In the later acts, when Modjeska appeared in page's costume, she seemed a beautiful picture of youth and gracefulness, delighting the eyes and hearts of her audience es completely as did the exauisite modulations of her voice, their ears, and the manifestations of her genius, their minds. But never do the limitations of the English tongue seem so great as when attempting worthily to describe Modjeska. Adjectives are all too few and all too weak to do her justice. Genius animates her words, her slightest motion, and genius alone could do her justice. Tho excellence of the supporting company has already been noted and it is no small task to rank any one of those who took the leading roles above the others.

Sir. Vanderfelt possesses a dignity of presence and an intelligence in the reading of his lines, well qualifying him for the difficult part of 1-otevs, which, in turn gives him lull opportunity for the display of his talents. Frank Clements was good as Owen Fawcett and James Cooper expressed well the subtle quaintness of (Shakespeare's clowns. Miss Mary Shaw gave a thoroughly artistic interpretation of Silvia, and the other parts without exception, were well sustained. It is many a day since RocheHter has seen so good a performance as The Two Gentlemen of Verona and the size and character of the audience, as well as the calls before the curtain to which Mmo.

Modjeska so gracefully responded, and the flowers which formed fitting tribute to her genius, showed well that Rochester appreciates true histrionic merit. READINGS FROM THE BILLS. The Lathers Organized. The lathers of this city held a meeting last evening, it was largely attended, thirty-seven lathers being present.
