The Grange or country seat which was built by Hamilton soon after he removed to this city, is now threatened by the march of improvement and will probably soon be destroyed.

This fate, indeed, would have overtaken it long ago, had it not been protected by its rocky elevation. Hamilton sought the latter because it afforded a fine view of Harlem plains, and in fact the beetling crag seems to defy both builders and contractors. Hence the street which is laid down on the map has never been cut through, but it is now probable that this will no longer be delayed, for dynamite coming merely a rich drone which, however, The editor of the Times, of Jasper, Ind. is very much elated by the alleged election of Cleveland. To these, as history records, Hamilton gave the name of the 4 Nine Muses." Into what pleasing real of fancy does the mind wander on recalling this one item singled from the many pages of the great man's life. THE FACTS. How Hamilton would have smiled at such a blunder. Instead of worshipping the Muses the hero of the revolution was devoting himself to the perpetuity of tliat republic which had just been founded and which was struggling for a permanent existence.

Had the reporter counted the number of trees in the enclosure he would have found it to be thirteen instead of nine and his statement that. tentional error in the final vote. The reader must not suppose that I am advocating or excusing such errors, my object being merely to mention a strange historical fact. The privilege of Habeas Corpus is contained in the Magna Charta, but its operations had been nullified by royal authority and this was one of the causes which led to the civil war in which Cromwell reached distinction. In 1674 the house of commons passed a bill fuliy defining the nature and power of Habeas Corpus, but the l9 of lords opposed it until it was carried by in the above mentioned i.frnner.

When the vote was taken the ayes were 57, nay3 5o in all 1 1 2 whereas the journal shows that the whole attendance at that time was only 1 07. This discrepancy is explained in the following manner: Lord Grey, who was one of the tellers, favored the bill and as a very corpulent nobleman voted Grey exclaimed, 4 you ought to pass for five. The recent suicide of Charles Parker, cashier of the Fifth avenue hotel, is ascribed to malaria. It will be well if this tragic event lead to some reform in sewage. The facts are as follows Hamilton was so intensely interested in the new constitution and the establishment of a permanent government, that when the former was adopted by the thirteen states he planted this group of trees one for each state.

How remarkable it is that while not one of them died, their growth has been varied like that of the states themselves. They are all of the same kind (planes) to indicate that the states are alike in nature, and Hamilton had the pleasure of seeing them become flourishing saplings. At present they are among the oldest trees in New York and their destruction seems almost a sacrilege. OTHER ASSOCIATIONS. From the Grange, Hamilton went to the fatal duel on the morning of the 11th of July, 1804.

It wa3 a drive of five miles to the place where the skiff awaited him, and he never returned. From the Grange his wife was summoned a few hours afterward to see him on a bed. He had been, after receiving the fatal shot, brought back to i his city, and was carried to the country seat of a friend (William Bayard), where he died the next day. This building is still standing. Lanci-otti, president of St. Mary's college in Kentucky, involving the rights of Amercan citizens abroad, is an interesting one. He was born in Italy, emigrated to this country thirteen years ago and has been a citizen five years. Desiring to return to his native country, he wrote to the state department asking if the Italian government, which requires military service of its citisens, could rightfully interfere with his personal liberty, and requesting that the proper passports, etc. be sent to him.

The uralization as extinguishing the obligations of its former subjects to military service, nor has the government any treaty stipulations with the United States which in any way modify the case so far as our citizens (like yourself) are concerned.

If, therefore, such native, so naturalized, returns to the jurisdiction to which he was once subject, the American passport which will be given him, on proper application, will ensure the earnest attention of our diplomatic and consular offices, in case there may be any proper opportunity of service to him. Charles Parker owned and occupied a house in 127th street, a spot which once wa3 a swamp and which was filled with garbage from the city. He naturally suffered from maleria and this led to such use of quinine that he became insane and the result was self destruction.

Nothing will save this city from wide-spread poisoning but a careful examination of the sewers and a reconstruction of all that are defective, which in deed is their general condition. It is now estimated that more than a thousand deaths besides incessant illness, annually can be ascribed to this cause which is constantly on the mcrtiase. SOCIAL HATTERS. Society is based on wealth and as soon as one loses his money he is naturally dropped. Here, for instance, is Hugo Freitsch, who at one time was a dashing member of the Coaching club and sported a splendid turnout.

He has recently lost his money and his name will no longer be paragraphed amid the gay men about town. These fellows make a tremendous struggle to keep up for they know that when they sink it is forever. Another social incident of interest is recalled by the death of the late S. C. In communicating this fact to him, Mr. Hunter, acting secretary of state, said 4 4 The rule of which you so justly complain a3 hard is maintained by Italy, and by Russia also, against all nationalities and is understood to have been enforced without exception in the case of subjects of those countries who, being liable to military duty, have left their original allegiance in any other country. George VanderbQt was the oldest and best beloved of the commodore's boys and as long as he lived William Earl of Chatham, who defended the claims of America so faithfully in parliament, was born on the 15th of November, 1708, while Baron Steuben, who proved so efficient during the revolution, was born November 1 5, 1730, which made him two years older than Washington. Next comes the name of Thur-low Weed, who was born November 15, 1797, and who brings the record of patriotism down to present times. Steuben was the only foreign general who brought to America a high professional reputation.

He was 4 7 when he came hither and had been a soldier from his seventeenth year, having won the rank of grand marshal by his service to old Fritz during the Seven Years' war. Thurlow Weed was also in early life a soldier and the same genius which gave him success in manipulating political powers would have insured him distinction had he remained in the military profession. Earl Chatham was buried in Westminster Abbey. Steuben fo'ind a grave on his farm in Oneida county and Thurlow Weed's grave gives distinction to the Albany cemetery. An honored grave is the highest boon that anyone can ask of his country.

These three men, though of different nationalities, united in love for America and perhaps even in death contemplated the still increasing greatness of our republic reminding one of Scott's lines "Oh, may I give adventurous fancv scope. Patti 's appearance as liosina in the 4 4 Barber of Seville attracted only a moderate house, but the favorite prima donna received her usual meed of applause. The Barber of Seville holds distinction as the first opera ever performed in America. This took place in 1820 when Manuel Garcia and his accomplished daughter (better known as Madame Malibran) produced this opera at the Park theater. Madame Malibran died in her 27th year and is still cherished in GO TO GOULD'S FOE Heelers. A WORD WHY Stocking Heel Protector was kept on the Staten island farm.

To return to General Hawley it may be mentioned tliat his illness was brief and its fatal result was at once predicted by the phjsieian. 11 came home election day suffering with a chill which was followed by pneumonia. The physician told the family that the case was hopeless and a consultation was held.

The patient had the full use of his faculties and was in such good spirits that the family could not believe that death was so near but after a day or two of increasing weakness he gently expired. Pneumonia is always highly dangerous but age increases the risk to an almost hopeless degree. Among the noted victims to this disease may be mentioned William B. Astor, Peter Cooper, Marshall Jewell, William E. Dodge, A.

T. Stewart and other men of social and financial prominence. ANOTHER DEATH. Lieutenant Colonel Armstrong, who has just died at the age of ninety-three, was the uncle of William and John Jacob Astor and the question arises how this will affect the nuptials between William's grand -daughter and Orme Wilson. The deceased colonel was a brother of the late Mrs.

William B. Astor and son of General John Armstrong secretary of war under Madison. His mother was sister of Cliancellor Livingston, who administered the oath in the inauguration of Washington. Goddard, who studied with the late Professor Parsons, declared that while he liked the science of law, he did not like the practice, and he proceeded to study for the ministry, a course which was also pursued by Mr. Farley. rSL la. slL memory as one of the early lost children of genius. I well remember many years ago attending Palma's opera house one night when the 4 4 Barber of Seville was performed, but unfortunately the enjoyment was almost spoiled by a strangely repulsive countenance which riveted my attention by its very ugliness. It was a soulless countenance, grim and Gorgon like, in which one would never expect pity or sympathy or anything that savored of the softer forms of human nature. As soon as my eyes rested on this object the opera lost its power and I could not but look on the strangely repulsive countenance which mastered me like a spelL Reader, it was my first sight of the senior Bennett, the founder of the Satanic press, and thenceforth I never was surprised at its venom and malignity.

Vtica Herald. We assume in the matter of the United States senator who is to be elected by the legislature of New York this winter, that the Republican members of the two branches of that body will hold a caucus on the matter as usual tliat various candidates will be named in this caucus, and that one of them will receive a majority of all the votes there cast. We assume that, as is customary, the voice of the majority of the Republican members of the legislature will be binding upon the minority, and that the voice of the majority of the caucus will subsequently be ratified by the Republican majority of the legislature. There is nothing in the present political siruation wlaeh warrants any other assumption. The Republican party has not the slightest intention of going into political bankruptcy, and distributing its assets among those who were it opponents at the recent election.
