'1 hey know, as well as we do, the under-workins cf the movement are ter kiti Genesee Mind, we do not say, that Symrne University was started for ties purpose of killing Gennse that is not it but tuo hole design of the Svraettse advocates is to incorporate, some means or other, tiie life of Genesee to. in the institute that is about stablisbed. licad their regulations (speci- bed in particular to statlents ot tincseci tor aiimisi-ion. and yon wiil get the gist of the whole, nfiair, so far aa Geneee coiicerneL We coi'V from a letter just received from liiomiier of 71 there: "Students of Gtn- etce- are to be receivcu autt crediteil with all the studies thev have passed in at Genesee with out fin examination; so Genesee college will be taovett in tact, if not in name." So-tii-e, if you lease, no such jirerogatives are ex-t.

The united infiueu of the Mothotlist denomination can never be ce ntered at Syracuse, nor upon the nniversit sity al- tu be r-stiiLlishrd mere. In part we nave ici.tiv stion wbv this cannot be. Further than tliat, it is not characteristic of that church to muted iu any local movement, so iiir as our of its history is net mi d.

iNo college ever started out uith laii'-r prospects than the dying Genesee. liiiernl, the location was pleasant, in1 the prime ministers iu its cause itii- us eiitbusiaetie as these now seem, who toe of Syracuse, Harmony in the ti nih'-nei; orai.isai;on of conferences was outing, the toliege begun to dee.ty. The as vested in too many lniuds it was nominally the -d. E. College of the Btate hut it could not receive the interest of all.

Had it bet under a jurisdiction other than that of the whole christian society of a state as large as this, it might have lived. We do not say that it would; bnt a diversity of interests could not have led to its overthrow it then would have died a natural, rather than a violent death. Had the supreme power been vest-td in oue nir-n, subject only to the authority of a lew iuhucntuti aud interested men, it might seeu a rie obi age. As it is, it stands out lis a warning perhaps the men who conduct the eflairs of the coming progeny may heed the story that it tells. Vet, with careful delitteration, we ass.

rt ibat the six of the nine trustees, who are not to be members of the M. E. church, will give it its Hie, and can only save it from an untimely min by keeping its control from tbe several conlerenees. The opposition that tbe western bretbern will bring against it, will prevent asuccesstul action ot its supporters. Third 'I he niovemeut is not mature enough menwii-hto plui the fruit before it is ripe.

Toeslaolbh an mntitutien that shall be au equal to the old-time ones that dot tbe state in a bali-scre of places, needs more than a scant ear's consideration of plans and operation. A Loi-houMi growth caunot be healthy nor can an institution pluck up courage, or develope living muscle upon scanty food and from half-housed quarters. The enterprise- undertaken, though worthy of success, has assumed such gigautic proportions that it will crumble its foundation of to a it-nny's worth of dust before it geta begun. No not a atone Lud, but tbe bare ground is all they have to start a university on this eoming August I Well, there is room to clow as long as they have the free air of heaven, we hope for health. Everything is to be tt tniMirarv and, we tear, the university it- soft.

As soon as the excitement of the moment i over, im inert uce will mark the course of the present euportera. Like tae lU-fited Genesee, it course will bo run before it is half begun. I pon the very same principle of haste uud enthusiasm waa the organisation of Genesee college dependent. That col lege was orie-ned bet' tbe buildings were ed funds lowered, and. since the spirits of the enihn-iitsts had assumed a natural tone, no uiore could be raised.

Genesee college, as a consequence, stood half completed, a monument to tne treaetiery ot naste ana lii-ati vised timeliness. iu this hail mature condition, with cramped aud narrow privileges, her doors were thrown open. asking patronage of tbe state. For a time the novelty of the atluir gave her support; but she could not compete with her sister the uiireagoiiaole reasoning ol her once ardent sup-IHiru-rs led them to condemn the locality, rather than their natures, as the cause of her dow nfall. We do not intend to say that this is to tie the fate of the coming auiversity uor do we wish it to be.

Hut the analogy between the two is very striking; Geneaee was modest in her pretensions, aud hail, relatively, as sound a mianciai touatiaiion. Syracuse is prodigal tier intensions, and wishes to comtiete with her sister, I ii ion. bo has nearly I -1 (W.iHjO endowment antl onlv professes herself eouai for two courses, the arts and civil engineeriug. Perhaps we may have misled some in our statement that Syracuse had no buddings; she bas none regularfy intended for the students but owns the SL Charles Hotel property which is designed to be so altered this summer as to accommodate, tbe pressing wauls of the comiug two or three years, it ia then designed to have a building eighty to ninety feet Uet iu tireactth by 108 in length an sixty teet in height in readiness. It may be; we hope so.

Hut tbe admitting of students when it ia iu so ptesriug demand, will, we fear, lead to a hastily cotuuoeud building. When this ia done, and siuce the "golden number" of students, that the louuders had eiectcd. is found to be reduced to li) (the average attendance of our college now -a days) we predict tbe other buildiuga will as the trow forgotten ones that were to deck the esmpua at Genesee, and that the St. Cliark-s, with the single building of OnonilsKii iimeetuue," will be all that is be seen of the Syracuse University. From the examples we have had, we know the opening of tbe doora of a college to students.

the building are convenient and ready for tbem, to be pernicious in its fleets. In those pood old times the ''frl of the period" was not afraid of dish water, and used to drea in ''home spun' and thick shawls, and our fore fathers and fore children mothers did not bring their cp to dcapiso house-toil. What a contrast between tbe industrious girl then, and tha sickly, miik-and-water jrirl of to-day. who lives to dress in a fashion to make herself bok as bid.
