Hawkins went off right tackle from the 2 for Pitt's fourth touchdown of the opening period after Jackson had blocked a punt by Army's Joe Sartiano on the Cadets' 43. After Pitt made it 35-0 on Marino's 16-yard touchdown pass to Collier at 5:54 of the second quarter, Army finally got on the scoreboard when sophomore halfback Gerry Walker ran 85 yards for a touchdown after taking a pitch from Allem. No. 9 Penn State Manhandles Temple Marino was 20-for-30 with 292 yards and four interceptions.

Split end Willie Collier caught two touchdown passes, one each from Trocano and Marino, while Artrell Hawkins caught a 32-yard pass from Marino for one touchdown and ran 2 yards for another. Pitt scored four touchdowns in the opening period, capitalizing on an interception and a fumble by Bryan Allem, Army's freshman quarterback, for the first two scores. Defensive end Ricky Jackson, formerly of Pahokee High School, intercepted an Allem pass on the Cadets' 33 on the opening series of the game, and four plays later, Trocano connected on a 7-yard pass to freshman flanker Dwight Collins to make it 6-0. With that touchdown, Collins, who later left the game with a pinched nerve in his neck, set a Panthers single-season touchdown pass reception record with 10. The next score came after Allem" fumbled on his own 30.

Hugh Green, Pitt's outstanding defensive end, recovered on the Cadets' 14, and after Joe McCall carried to the 1, Wayne DiBartolla went straight ahead to make it 13-0 at 8:19.
