Ann-Margret is that exceptional glamor girl who has beaten the odds.

Most Hollywood sex symbols, relying on beautiful faces and alluring bodies, make a splash hyped by publicity, appear in a few movies and fade quickly. The cycle takes from five to 10 years. The exceptional ones, girls who are particularly tenacious and talented, may even stretch their longevity to 15 years, but that's about tops. Few reigning glamor queens stretched their dynasties to 20 years. At least not as sex symbols.

Youth and beauty are perhaps Hollywood's most perishable qualities. Room must be made at the top every few years for a new crop of beauties. How much time remains for Far-rah Fawcett? Bo Derek? Sex symbols are a breed apart from the rare, outstanding actresses who enjoy lengthier careers the Hepburns, Davises and Fondas. But Ann-Margret, who has starred in 30 movies, has maintained her glamorous, sexy image for 19 years and promises to set longevity records for youthful beauty as she goes along. She was dewy fresh in her Benedict Canyon home the other day, wearing coarse knitted blue and yellow striped woolen knee socks and boots, blue jeans and a V-necked navy blue pullover sweater.

Her long, rust-red hair tumbled provocatively over her eyes. If anything, she was more lithe and lovely than she was as a teenager in her first movie, "Pocketful of Miracles," with Glenn Ford in 1961. You may see for yourself on ABC-TV this weekend (Channels 10 and 12 at 9:30 p.m.) when she sings and dances through her 90-minute special. Ann-Margret has a few serious moments, too, in which she displays her dramatic talents. The Swedish-born beauty has, after all, been nominated twice for Academy Awards.

"After we completed this special, I did an extra added scene so people could see me as myself instead of as a performer," Ann-Margret said. "We shot it on the back lot at Paramount where I did 'Pocketful of I've seen the decline of big studios, the growth of small, independent producers, the departure from back lots to locations. "But most important of all and I say this on the show I've seen the development of women's roles from sex symbols to symbols of their sex." There is a profound difference so far as Ann-Margret is concerned, a distinction which probably accounts for her continuing success.
