Career-high rushing of 135 yards by junior Mike Augustyniak and 103 yards by Jones, a freshman, keyed an unexpectedly strong Purdue ground game after starters John Macon and Russell Pope were injured early in the game. Sophomore quarterback Mark Herrmann, meanwhile, who was a doubtful starter after suffering a neck sprain a week earlier at Michigan, directed each Boilermaker scoring drive and passed for 135 yards. The Boilermakers led 13-7 at half-time and scored the clinching touchdown by Jones, his first, seven plays after the Hoosiers fumbled away the ball at their own 36 midway through the third quarter. Mike Kalasmiki passed for 173 yards and three touchdowns while Ira Matthews scored on a 31-yard run and on a 64-yard punt return, giving Wisconsin a 48-10 win over Minnesota. The victory gave MSU a 7-1 conference record, tying it for first place with Michigan, which defeated Ohio State 14-3. The 14th-ranked Spartans finished 8-3 overall.

Despite its record, however, Michigan State is ineligible for a post-season bowl bid because its three-year NCAA probation for recruiting and other football program violations does not end until Jan. 18. The defeat dropped Iowa to 2-6 in the Big Ten and 2-9 overall. The game was never a contest, as Michigan State scored the first two times it had the ball and built up a 35-0 halftime lead. Although the Spartans' league-leading offense sputtered at times, particularly in a lackluster second half, it had several big plays to set up touchdowns.

Iowa, meanwhile, had little luck moving the ball. Stopped by their own mistakes and a rugged MSU defense, the Hawkeyes never threatened to score until late in the third period. Michigan State scored on its third play from scrimmage, as Smith found flanker Kirk Gibson open up the middle and he outran the Iowa secondary to complete a 54-yard touchdown pass play. Hayes finally turned to Senior Rod Gerald to quarterback the Buckeyes in the fourth quarter, but he had no more success than Schlichter. Gerald's running had led Ohio State to Big Ten title shares with Michigan the past two seasons. Schlichter returned to throw an interception in the final moments.

Ohio State will take a 7-3-1 record to the Gator Bowl against Clemson Dec. 29. fense for two touchdowns, more than enough to halt the Buckeyes record of six straight league titles or co-titles. Leach passed 30 yards to wide receiver Rodney Feaster to wipe out a shortlived 3-0 Buckeyes' lead in the first quarter. Ohio State had gone ahead on Bob Atha's 29-yard field goal.

The Michigan quarterback, who has accounted for a collegiate record of 81 career touchdowns, threw an 11-yard scoring pass to tailback Roosevelt Smith in the third quarter, wrapping up the victory. The largest crowd in Ohio Stadium history, 88,358, and millions more on Reminded that he had held the Buckeyes without a touchdown for the third straight year, Schem-bechler was asked if he had Ohio State's number. "No, I don't have anybody's number," he said. "But I must admit I never thought this would happen. I just hope the touchdowns don't come in flurries now." Sixth-ranked Michigan earned a share of the Big Ten Conference championship and will carry a 10-1-0 record against Southern California in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day at Pasadena, Calif.

Junior quarterback John Marzo engineered two second-half drives to help Colgate rally to upset Rutgers 14-9 yesterday. Rutgers jumped to 9-0 lead at half-time on three field goals by junior Kennan Startzell. The third was Startzell's 13th of the season, a school record. Marzo started the game but was replaced in the second period.

He rected his team 82 yards on Colgate's first possession in the second half, and scored on a 5-yard run. As the fourth period began, Marzo found wide-receiver Dick Slenker open and connected for a 28-yard scoring play. The touchdown concluded a 12-play, 99-yard drive that began after Rutgers' punter Deron Cherry trapped the visitors deep in their own territory. The Scarlet Knights, who completed the regular season with a 9-2 record, had two opportunities to score late in the game, but a hardhitting Red Raider defense stiffened. Halfway through the final period, Rutgers' linebacker Jeff Blanchard intercepted a Marzo pass at the Colgate 5-yard line.

However, Rutgers was stopped as quarterback Bob Hering was sacked in a fourth-down pass attempt. Late in the fourth period, Rutgers took over again near midfield but a desperation pass by Hering was intercepted by Colgate's Paul Lawler at the Red Raider 16-yard line. The loss ended the Scarlets 20-game home winning streak, while Colgate finished at 3-8.
