He was 64. One of the top ends in the NFL during his playing days with the Chicago Bears, Wilson served several years as a Lions assistant before taking over the top spot from Buddy Parker in 1957.

The Lions won the NFL championship that year. Wilson remained with the team until the end of the 1964-65 season, and after a break took over the top coaching job with the Miami Dolphins for three seasons. He retired to enter the real estate and construction business in Florida and operate a par-3 golf course near Miami. He returned to Michigan several months ago, planning to move into a new home he had built in Howell. Survivors include his widow, Claire, four daughters and a son.

A funeral Mass will be sung Monday in suburban Farmington, with burial following in Dearborn.
