IUP Adds Two More "Centers" Two additional school districts are now affiliated with the Indiana University of Pennsylvania's student teacher program. They are the Greater Johnstown Area Vocational Technical School District and the Altoona Area Vocational Technical School District.

The addition of the Johnstown and Altoona schools brings the total number of schools participating in the IUP student teaching experience to 96. Known as "centers." these cooperating schools are located within an 80-mile radius of the Indiana campus. Since the student teaching experience constitutes the heart of any teacher education program, each center must meet specific requirements established by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction as well as standards developed by the IUP School of Education. There are also special quali fications for "cooperating teachers," the experienced professionals who guide the student in his initial teaching assignment. In many cases the qualifications of cooperating teachers affiliated with the IUP student teaching program exceed the minimum standards required by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction.

There are currently 810 IUP students doing their student teaching. They are spending this semester working full time in a cooperating school or in the University School oh campus. Having had an opportunity to indicate their chokes of school assignment, most of them are now teaching in a location of their preference and. in many instances, in Die grade of their choice. diana.
