't 1 Palm Beach Post-Times, Saturday, October 14, 1978 D5 Tennis is the Only Thing Liess Wants To Do 7 can't settle for less. If I can't be best, I don't play. Like cards. I don't like cards because I always lose. I don't like to do something I can't win at so, like poker, if I can't win I don't Zenda Liess The United States had clinched the cup with Kathryn Jordan's win over Anthea Cooper of Great Britain 6-2, 7-5, earlier yesterday.

gave the United States an insurmountable 6-1 lead in the best-of-11 matches (eight singles and three doubles.) In other matches yesterday, Barbara Hallquist of Arcadia, defeated Kate Glan-cy of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-4, and Pam Shriver of Lutherville, the United States' No. 1 player, beat Anne Hobbs of Cheshire, England 6-2, 6-2. Shriver said she was elated with her country's victory, though her performance last night did not directly determine that win. "To win the matches so decisively over Great Britain was an honor and I was glad to have contributed to that," said Shriver, who beat Great Britain's Durie, 6-0, 6-4, Wednesday night. "It was a pretty nice feeling to be on the team.

Though if this match tonight would have been the decisive match, I might have tried a bit harder, for my pride. I didn't want to lose to them." Liess differed in discussing her match which also came as an insurance to the U.S. triumph. "I don't think it would have mattered; I would have played just as hard if we hadn't won it yet," Liess said. In the final doubles match, the U.S.

team of Pam Shriver and Kathy Jordan defeated Anne Hobbs and Joann Duries of Great Britain 6-2, tona Beach all she had was about $2 cash and a checkbook. On the way home, the Datsun twice puttered to a stop and once suffered a flat tire. But Liess, who was due at her Spruce Creek High School to keep score for the boys' basketball games, and her car never gave up. All three times she flagged down help, pleaded for a battery jump start and, after writing out $5 checks to all those who helped her, finally made it by the third quarter of the junior varsity game. "Any other girl would have given up," Liess said proudly.

"But not me. The car would putt-putt-putt to the side of the road but I knew I'd make it. Some other girl would have been scared to death." Liess said that incident best typifies her action on the court never giving up, never crying in agony before the final point. Liess showed that unrelenting quality yesterday when she disposed of JoAnna Durie of Cheshire, England 6-2, 6-3, on the newly-built clay courts at Deer Creek before a crowd of 1,200. It was Liess' second victory for the United States team for which she was playing in the annual Connolly Cup matches against Great Britain.

But though Liess fought with all her gusto, her victory last night was just a cushioning of the United States' cup victory for the fifth time in six years in the event named in honor of Maureen (Little Mo) Connolly Brinker, the first woman to earn the Grand Slam of tennis title (winning Wimbledon and the U.S., French and Australian opens.) By PEGGY GOSSETT PMt Stiff WriUr DEERFIELD BEACH Zenda Liess is a lot like her old car, "the Little Blue Putter." When either she or the 1970 Datsun runs out of gas, they run on sheer determination. "I don't do anything halfway; when I go for something I go all the way at all costs," Liess said yesterday at the Deer Creek Club where she was competing in the Connolly Cup International Tennis Matches. "I can't settle for less. If I can't be best, I don't play. Like cards.

I don't like cards because I always lose. I don't like to do something I can't win at so, like poker, if I can't win I don't play." So when Liess, the 18-year-old from Daytona Beach, begins losing energy in a tennis match, she pulls down deep within her resources and draws on her innate determination to settle for nothing but the best. Just like her Datsun, the ramshackle heap in which she made it home from Miami despite three breakdowns and an empty wallet. The story of her impossible ride home would take too long to retell in its entirety. But in short: Liess turned 18 last Dec.

13. She celebrated by tearing through the Miami Jai-Alai fronton, the dog tracks and the bars in which she sampled her first legal sips of alcoholic beverages. Her 28-year-old brother Dennis and his wife escorted Liess through her birthday escapades, and when it came time for her to return to Day- Live On WEAT Radio 850 Ifinsiila Slate Piiwes'slt AT 1 i i Mississippi Slate Saturday, October 14th Airtime 2:15 PM Kick Off Action 2:30 PM EDT 4 fy PURDY LANE PUB PURDY LANE MILITARY TRAIL CONTINUOUS ENTERTAINMENT 1 I 11 AM TIL I SrWHWJM HWOWRDjS rflHMnWB WtHmnkM BBWWW WMHII BWPlJ FTi Bj'ffJMMM PWWM PWWIM PMWM(bW fPWM jiJ IkMaMiWifl LtHtiilfliM IbMMiuakkfH battUkglM (amf jnjugjf BlMHMattHi BiiAUitaWafl MifcMWMw KtlUiiitjMfta UMUUuiiia PkhjiM P-'f11 "itlj lUttUHItliH lltlKltt" 1 li 1 I i it. (AP) Bob Lanier set a club record with 21 points in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough for Detroit as the Pistons dropped a 107-105 decision to the New Jersey Nets. The game marked the NBA coaching debut of Detroit's Dick Vitale and it was the first basketball game ever played in the Pontiac Silver-dome.

Last year, the Pistons played at Cobo Arena in Detroit. The crowd of 13,688 was a record for a Detroit home game. The old mark of 13,121 was set Dec. 4, 1959 at Olympia Stadium. Lanier, the 6-foot-ll superstar center, scored only nine points in the first half before finding the range.

His 21-point final period surpassed the previous team mark of 17 set by Kevin Porter at Buffalo Nov. 25, 1976. Lanier finished with 38 points. A78-13 Blackwall Plus 34C Fed. tax exp.
