March 5. 1972 Makarios May Drop The Reins NICOSIA, Cyprus AP) -Archbishop Makarios will resign as president of Cyprus if the Synod of the Cyprus church insists despite his overwhelming popular support, informed sources said yesterday.

Observers feel such a development might push the island into chaos or evn civil war.
