The calamari was good, the breaded shrimp basket and cheeseburger were good, too, but the fried fish was the favorite.

The light, white fish was fried just dark enough in a tempura-type batter. It came with a small dish of coleslaw and French fries. All three of us started with two pieces of fish, then we each asked for a third piece. It was quickly brought to the table. The Seafood Shanty is connected to Sandy's Seafood in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Melaleuca Lane and Jog Road, but ifs the lower-cost alternative to Sandy's.

There were six of us there that night, and all but one of us ordered seafood, with three getting the all-you-can-eat fish.

"In 2000, our pantries served almost 12,000 people, and last year it was over 21,000," Bryant said. "We went over our food budget by $10,000 at the Delray pantry." Block, which has helped with the food drive since 1998, urges clients to donate canned vegetables, meats, fruits and tomato sauce, as well as rice, pasta and beans, said food drive coordinator Deborah Silverstein.

"One or two cans can make a difference," Silverstein said. Food drop-off locations are at the following Block tax offices: Lantana 1319 S. The company has teamed up with the Community Food Pantry in a massive effort to restock the shelves of six pantries from Delray Beach to Riviera Beach. "We desperately need the food, because the demand is so high," said Juan-ita Bryant, Community Food Pantry's south county coordinator. In years past, the food drive was held to keep shelves full for the summer months when donations are traditionally slower, Bryant said. But the current economic crisis has dramatically increased the number of families served, and now Veterans, here's your chance to tell us your story.
