Dei Rin News-Herald Thursday, Novmntor 18 ,1990 12 Release is important In the Monday night ladies league, we still have a tie for first place between Cutters Unlimited and Dunkin Donuts while Gateway Safety Systems stays close behind in third. The standings in the Tuesday night league are also close with the Grand Mothers in first, followed by Arrow Sheet Metal in second and Rockin' in third. Most of us "ate the dust" of Elm a Brown, who was really smokin' Tuesday night. Her high game was 62 pins over her average, and her series was a fantastic 121 pins over average. Over the weeks, I've covered just about every aspect of bowling that I thought might interest the bowlers of Del Rio.

I'll continue to write, but if you've been a faithful reader of this column, you'll see some repitition. However, maybe you'll see something you missed the first time around, or maybe there'll be something new or different added. The release is one of the most important aspects of bowling. There are three basic types of release: The backup, or reverse hook, the straight ball, and the hook. The position of your thumb at the point of release determines whether your ball backs up, rolls straight, or hooks.

If your thumb is pointed to the right of 12:00 at the release point (for a right- hander), the ball will back up. If your thumb is pointed at 12:00, BcjwUr't Bog Writer the ball will roll straight. Should your thumb be pointed to the left of 12:00, it'll hook. The hook ball is the ideal release, because the ball will break toward the 1-3 pocket. A strong hit there results in less ball deflection and better pin carry.

The best way for a bowler to develop a strong release is to learn to keep the wrist straight and firm throughout the swing. This means even while you're holding your ball before the pushaway, the wrist should be straight. A bent wrist makes it harder to hold onto the ball in the downswing, and the bowler often drops the ball just at the foul line, and sometimes even before the foul line. To develop a good release it is important to keep your wrist firm, stay down with a good knee bend, extend follow-through toward target, and practice wrist curls using small dumbbells or cans of vegetables from your kitchen cupboard. reboard NFL Toronto 4 16 1 59 Smythc Division Los Angeles 13 4 1 27 82 S3 Calgary 12 7 1 25 86 62 nil Football League At A Glance fey The Associated Press All Times EST ERIC AN CONFERENCE East Vancouver Winnipeg Edmonton 9 10 0 18 66 711 311 2 16 64 69 8 44 54 Pet.
