Quattlebaum said she was always curious about the washboard when she saw Cooke playing it, but didn't pick it up herself until three months ago. Tm honored to do it," she By RANI GUPTA Palm Beack Post Staff Writer WEST PALM BEACH Longtime Clematis Street fixture Washboard Bill will be missing from Friday's Fourth on Flagler festivities, but a handful of musicians will pay tribute to his classic sound. Friday's parade will feature six washboard players from as far away as Michigan and Maryland playing in tribute to Washboard Bill, whose real name was William Cooke. Cooke died April 27 of colon cancer. Friday would have been his 98th birthday.

joyed making people happy, and I do too," Sanborn said. Fort Lauderdale musician Stan Street agreed to play because he was intrigued by Cooke's story. Cooke left his home of Dupont, near Sanford, at age 12 and worked mainly on farms and railroads before discovering the washboard, which he played in bands. He recorded songs once with legendary folk singer Pete Seeger and traveled by train to his gigs, eventually settling in West Palm Beach in 1974. He soon became a local celebrity, tunes, road blues and bawdy ditties.

"I like folk roots musicians, people who are a little bit eccentric, and this guy sounds like he was," Street said. "I'm interested in finding out more about him." Russell Hibbard, who plays in the Banyan Street Jug Band, likes that the Fourth on Flagler parade honors the type of musician who is usually ignored. "In any place in America you can come across people of phenomenal talent who are not known outside their area," Fourth on Flagler starts Friday at 5 p.m. on Flagler Drive between Fem Street and Banyan Boulevard. The Wishy Washy Parade starts at 7 p.m.

Katherine Jeanne Ferguson Boaters get customs site at marina for holiday By LARRY H0BBS Palm Beach Post Staff Writer When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to take the Sea Ray to the Bahamas for the Fourth of July weekend, boaters should have the right not to spend hours waiting to clear customs on the way back.

In the spirit of the holiday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection have come up with an alternative to widely unpopular regulations that forced boaters returning to the country to park their boats and go through customs at the Port of Palm Beach or Palm Beach International Airport Instead, recreational boaters returning Sunday to Palm Beach County from the Bahamas and other foreign ports can clear customs at the Sail-fish Marina on Singer Island, the agency announced Wednesday. A team of customs agents will be there from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. to process boaters. Customs spokesman Zachary Mann said the agency plans to offer alternative check-in points on all holiday weekends.

All boaters arriving from Fort Pierce to Key West must go through customs, Mann said. Memorial Chapel, Boynton Beach. Funeral today. Gise, Ethel, 93, of Boynton Beach, died Sunday. Neptune Society, Fort Lauderdale.
