The small liberal arts school in Winter Park is planning to expand the museum and the Cornells were the first to help, donating $1.5 million to the college this month. Museum Director Arthur Blu-menthal said the $3.5 million expansion will quadruple the space of the facility, providing areas for permanent and visiting exhibits, student activities and community events. The museum has more than 6,000 works of art in its collection but because of limited space can exhibit only a small number at any time.

"We're very proud of the museum," Harriet Cornell said Thursday. "They have a lot of beautiful paintings in storage that nobody gets to see." The Cornells have made various gifts to the college through the years, including the endowment of a teaching position. The museum, as well as a campus center and social studies hall, bear their name. George Cornell, who is a descendant of the founder of Cornell University in New York, is a 1935 graduate of Rollins. He and his wife also have donated money to local groups, such as Old School Square and the Morikami Museum in Delray Beach and Dreher Park Zoo in West Palm Beach.
