it THE PALM BEACH POST WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1996 9C Stars top D.C.; ex-Mutiny official charged with embezzlement The Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Peter Vermes scored in the 11th round of a shootout Tuesday night to give New York-New Jersey a 3-2 victory over D.C. United in the first game of the MLS Eastern Conference series. Vermes' low bouncing shot I eluded Jeff Causey, giving the Me-troStars a 6-5 edge in the shootout. New York-New Jersey can wrap up the best-of-three first- round series Friday night Giovanni Savarese tied it 2-2 in the 75th minute, just a minute after he entered the game as a substitute.

Savarese beat defender $100,000 from the Major League Soccer team. Authorities said Mark Fortunat, 30, brother of MLS international player coordinator Monique Fortunat, is suspected of taking the money between April and August. The Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office charged him with grand theft. Team officials fired Fortunat Aug. 9 following the audit.

Investigators from the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office arrested Fortunat Monday night and charged him with grand theft. He was released from the county jail a few hours later after posting $25,000 bail. According to an arrest affidavit, Fortunat took cash from ticket and novelty sales that was supposed to be deposited into the team's bank account and, instead, put it into his personal account. Then Fortunat doctored accounting records to hide the theft, said Assistant State Attorney Robert Shimberg. "The team came to us about two weeks ago with a nice packet of information they'd prepared for our investigators," Shimberg said.

Shimberg said investigators turned up bank records showing how the money was stolen, but the missing cash has not been recovered. "It's all circumstantial right now," Fortunat told the Tampa Tribune Tuesday. "We'll see when we get to court." Mutiny officials declined comment. The Mutiny left Tampa Tuesday for tonight's playoff game against the Columbus Crew in Ohio. Fortunat worked as a part-time volunteer assistant for World Cup '94, and joined the MLS league office in Los Angeles in December 1995.

The Mutiny hired Fortunat in February after he served as a volunteer at the MLS player try- outs. SOCCER WORLD CUP India 1, Sri Lanka 1: Carlton Chapman scored with six minutes left in the first half Tuesday night, giving India a tie with Sri Lanka in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. India (1-0-1) must beat Qatar (2-0) on Friday to advance to the second round of Asian qualifying, which will include 10 nations. Sri Lanka and the Philippines have been eliminated from Group Ten. Sri Lanka went ahead in the 14th minute when Anthony Silva scored after a poor clearing pass by defender Jiju Jacob.

Eddie Pope to a low cross from Antony De Avila. United's Raul Diaz opened the scoring in the 24th minute, and De Avila tied it in the 38th minute. United regained the lead 11 minutes into the second half on Jaime Moreno's header off a pass from Arce. Frank Centolella, former GCBCA executive director, said the decision of the six Don Carter centers in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties to pull out of the sweepstakes made it unfeasible to continue. "The key to the whole thing was numbers," said Centolella, who started the program in 1991 as the executive director of the Palm Beach County Bowling Proprietors Association.

"Without the Carter chain, you're taking away six of the 16 centers and about 40 percent of the bowlers who participated." More than 12,000 sanctioned league bowlers in the tri-county area paid $10 each to enter last year's sweepstakes. Almost 10 percent of them 1,145 won a minimum of $50. Quarterfi-nalists received $100 each, semifinalists $200. The five bowlers who reached the stepladder finals competed for $19,000 $10,000 to the winner, $5,000 to the runner-up, $2,500 for third, $1,000 for fourth and $500 for fifth. "It's a shame," said George Pryor, secretary-treasurer of the Palm Beach County Bowling Association.

"That pins over average was the best thing that's come down the pike for the bowlers." Four of the six $10,000 winners were from Don Carter centers. John Graves, who averaged 151 at Don Carter's All-Star Lanes in Lake Worth, won last year's top prize, and three of the champions were from Don Carter's in Jupiter Diana McKellip-Gauthier in 1991, Heather Adams in '93 and Patrick Loveland in '95. The Don Carter Management Co. has replaced the event with a pins-over-average tournament called League Bowlers Bonanza for sanctioned league bowlers at Don Carter centers in Jupiter, Lake Worth, Boca Raton, Sunrise, Tamarac and Kendall. "We were maybe 75 percent of that event," said PBA Hall of Famer Frank Espo-sito, director of Florida promotions for the Carter chain.

"We got no cooperation from the association with our pro tournament (the $300 Comfort Inn Classic) for two years. So we decided to structure it as a Don Carter event for league bowlers." Esposito said Carter's people thought too much money had been taken out for salaries. "We took in $120,000 in entry fees last year and paid out $104,000," Centolella said. "Eighty-eight cents of every dollar went back to the bowlers; only 12 percent went for expenses. Most tournaments take out about 30 percent for expenses." Entry fee for the Carter tournament is $10.

It has two divisions one for averages of 179 and under, the other for 180 and over. The winner of each will receive $5,000. Entry deadline is Nov. 1. Better than average: April Costa of West Palm Beach won the $300 first prize in the women's division of the Average Scratch Bowlers Classic six-game sweeper at Green-acres Bowl, averaging 231.6.

Runner-up Corinne Ham of Cocoa (217 average) won $75. Mike Azcarate won the men's division ($500, 233.3), beating Ryan Boyd ($250, 232.6) by four pins. Shawn Evans was third ($100, 231.1), and Ron Costantino was fourth ($75, 230.6). Colleges Markham and Darlene Thompson had 10 kills apiece for Northwood.
