Mama, don't let your babies grow up toie cowboys. Unless they're like Mark Harrison. He's one of the ecologically sensitive men on the range. Harrison, the nephew of rancher Bud Adams, grew up in Miami but spent his summers on the sprawling Adams Ranch, 12 miles west of Florida's Turn JRN RIGHT I I 1 i 1 i 1 i I- 1 r. pike in Fort Pierce.

"I'm part of the clan," said Harrison, whose mother is Elaine Adams Harrison. In February, Harrison, 43, began giving tours of the Adams Ranch in an open-air, canopied, camouflaged former school bus. The Braford is a cross between the Brahma and the Hereford. In 1969, it was officially recognized as a new breed of cattle, with a pleasant disposition and a tolerance for Florida's summer heat.

"The Brahma can be mean," Harrison said. It was one year ago today that the West Palm Beach-based WPBZ, home to the time-warped format known as Z-Rock, changed its tune and tone to The Buzz, "Florida's New Rock Alternative." Gone was the long-haired sound of '70s and '80s rock. In was the esoteric, in-your-face stylings of alternative rock, a catch-all term that incorporates everything from the roots-based Blues Traveler to the bizarre Ben Folds Five. A woman sings of swallowing a jagged little pill. A band of men praises the virtues of canned peaches. But the music is just the starting point.

Their sweet faces made me think it will be hard to eat another hamburger. Within two hours of bouncing over the rutted ranch roads, we had seen deer scamper, a little fawn give us a long stare, five wild hogs grazing, lots of cattle egrets, ibis, mallards, wildflowers and finally a red-tailed hawk, ticked off because we interrupted his meal. Rolling pasture, a citrus grove, oak hammocks, canals, a spring-fed pond, a cypress cabin, stables and an auction barn give you a true picture of modern cattle ranching and Old Florida. this isn't a zoo," Harrison said.
