(fl1) Responsible Finnish sources said Sunday the new Russo-Finnish security pact had its origin in Finland's desire to save some of the almost impregnable defenses hewn in the rocks along her coast and off-shore islands. The first step was taken in September, 1944. after the armistice between the Soviet Union and Finland. Marshal Carl Gustav Man-nerheim. then Finnish president, expressed the hope of salvaging something from defeat which could serve Finland later in helping her defend herself and maintain her independence.
