Palm Beach Post-Times, Sunday, April 9, 1978 E3 Skiffs Departure Marks Channel 12 Facelifting Larry Dorman metic change around here in quite awhile and it's certainly time we did." If the reshuffling at WPEC is to be effective, it seems the changes will have to be more than a mere facelifting. Since the station doesn't have the capability for a live remote broadcast, as both WPTV and WTVJ do, WPEC will have to compensate by shooting more and better film of local events instead of devoting so much time to talking heads. Certainly the loss of Mrs. Skiff, who has given to things like wondering why the score of a game that wasn't going to be played until the next weekend wasn't available will not hurt. How much the addition of Gizinski will help is something which remains to be seen.

In the end, however, there can be no doubt that the people who'll benefit most from the WPEC shakeup, and the resulting competition it's sure to ignite between the two local stations, will be the viewers. among sports, news and weather watchers, it's no secret that sports is one of the most widey watched of the three segments. Thus, WPEC began to ponder the sports changes, Markham says, when it became apparent the station wasn't making the kind of advances it had hoped for in the ratings. "Everything we do is an attempt to gain on the other stations," Markham said. "We haven't had a cos In addition to helping out with filmed interviews, Gizinski will anchor the 11 p.m.

sports. Gallagher, who formerly did both the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. shows during the week will now handle the noon and 6 p.m. anchor.

Gabby Bell will no longer be doing his noon repartee with AnEta Sewell. He'll be switching to the weekend anchor position May 1. Reporter Charles Caudill will be filling in on weekends until then. "We're going to increase our coverage of some of the WPEC (Channel 12), whose 6 and 11 p.m. news programs are the perennial last place finishers in the three-way race for ratings with front runner WPTV (Channel 5) and WTVJ (Channel 4), has begun a major face-lifting operation starting with its sports department.

The first head to roll was that of Linda Skiff, who had been anchoring the weekend sports program at the ABC affiliate. Mrs. Skkiff, whose knowledge of sports often appeared spotty and whose inexperience was painfully obvious, left the station Friday. The official explanation is that she resigned. WPEC news director Bill Markham, who hired Mrs.

Skiff, said the station has been planning a revamping of its sports staff "for a long time" and that Mrs. Skiff was aware she wasn't included in the plans. "We're completely revamping our sports department," said Markham. "Linda knew it was coming. Whether she resigned for that reason or not, I don't know." The changes at WPEC, part of an overall effort to close the gap in the ratings, will begin May 1 with the return of Greg Gizinski.

Gizinski, who left WPEC last' June for a job with the ABC affiliate in St. Petersburg, will be returning as a fulltime sports reporter in an effort to beef up local sports coverage. "It will give us a pretty strong sports staff," said Channel 12 sports director Jim Gallagher, who no longer will be saddled with the one-man band role of sports director-reporter-anchorman. "It will look a little different than the situation we have now where I'm the one anchoring the show and doing all the filmed interviews." local things people in this area are interestea in, nice golf and tennis," said markham. "We're planning to do in-depth features, and Greg wil really be able to help REGISTER NOW FOR 1978-79 Kindergarten (all day) thru 1 2rhGrade us out.

He a real hustler. Surely the changes at Channel 12 are long overdue. Although the station made some nominal gains on WPTV and WTVJ during the most recent rating sweeps, WPEC still has a long way to go. According to the most recent Arbitron and Nielsen surveys, Channel 4 continues to run ahead of Channel 12 despite the fact it carries very little, if any, news of interest to the West Palm Beach area. If Banks is to stop the Express attack, he'll need far more help than he got last week from his defenders.

Tony Whelan aside, the Striker defense was a sieve. Alan Hamlin, Roberto Aguirre are the key figures who must combine with Whelan to cut off the Express attack before it can bore in on Banks. "I'm hoping now we can get the kind of endeavor we got last year at home. The excitement of playing before the home crowd will help. But we're pretty thin going into the game." How much the return of mid-Fielder Colin Fowles will help the Strikers slow down the very quick Express attack is uncertain. George Nanchoff still has not returned to the lineup, and Newman said last week was devoted to simply "getting fit." "They are a very fast, aggressive side," Newman said of the Express.

"They've won their first game and that probably will give them a lot of confidence. I think once we get our first goal, we'll be OK." Getting that first goal won't be the easiest of tasks. Express goalie Steve Hardwick, 21, was a first division goalie in England with Newcastle United. Paul I nter, who was the Cosmos' No. 1 draft pick in 1977 before being purchased by the Express, is an excellent defender, moves well on the attack, and could create problems for the Strikers.

Ian Davies, a 21-year-old defender who played in the English first division at the age of 16, is another large obstacle in the path of the Strikers' first goal. Steve Sargeant, also a former first divi Sears Automotive rf 26 Vaninger and Gordon Fearnley will be the forwards. "Needing that first goal puts some pressure on us," Newman said. "When you're trying to get that first goal, sometimes you press a little too hard. Once we get it, we'll be fine." Furphy said his team won't decide how to attack the Strikers until the game gets under way.

"We've got speed where we want it," he said, "and we'll wait and see what happens. We haven't really seen enough to have anything planned. "We try to impose the way we play against opponents." Newman, meanwhile, will be trying to impose the Strikers' style of play on Detroit. The problem is, the Strikers have yet to develop a specific style. lilnt Uull Nebular SI Plus SI.
