Ukiah Daily Journal, Uklah, Calif. Dick Bass mark falls Monday, December 12, 1977 GARY PLAYER'S GOLF CLASS: Pro grid races get very close By GREG AIELO UPI Sports Writer No matter how you figure it, and it certainly takes a lot of figuring, the New England Patriots came out the biggest losers on a day when they won their most important game of the year. Despite defeating Miami 1410 Sunday, the Patriots wound up with the most difficult task among the three teams fighting for the AFC East's playoff spot because Baltimore lost unexpectedly to Detroit 13-10. The Patriots had figured they would qualify with victories over Miami and Baltimore in their final two games. But that, it turned out, depended on the Colts beating Detroit Sunday.

Ironically, Baltimore's loss their third straicht when Detroit's Leonard Thompson blocked David Lee's punt at the 10, picKea it up at tne two and ran it in for a touchdown with nine seconds play. Detroit Coach Tommy Hudspeth called for an 11 -man rush on the play. In Oakland, Ken Stabler converted three of seven Minnesota turnovers into scoring passes and Mark Van Eeghen ran for 112 yards to increase his total to 1,202. Stabler threw 10-and 32-yard touchdown pasSes to Cliff Branch and a 2-yarder to Carl Garrett. The loss left the Vikings at 85 and dropped them into a firstplace tie with Chicago in the NFC Central.

Miami wil playoffs if it Saturday and defeats Baltimore Sunday New England makes it only if Buffalo upsets the Dolphins and the Patriots beat Baltimore.

The reason it works out that way is the NFL's complicated formula for deciding playoff spots among teams with equal records. Baltimore, Miami and New England all have 9-4 records. In the event of a tie for the division title, Miami has the edge on New England because of a better division record while Baltimore moves into the playoffs ahead of Miami based on their superior conference mark. Only one team (pom the AFC East can qualify for the playoffs because Oakland downed Minnesota 35-13 to clinch the AFC wild card spot with a 10-3 record. The defending Super Bowl champion Raiders reached the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

"I can't believe they let Detroit do that," New England defensive back Bob Howard said about the Colts' loss. "That eliminates us. We were so happy a few minutes ago, but this is no good. They eliminated us by losing. That doesn't seem fair." The Patriots' only hope is for Buffalo to upset Miami.

With all the possibilities, New England must rely on one of the biggest improbabilities. Ike Forte and Sam Cunningham each capped two long first-period drives with 1-yard TD runs and New England's defense survived Bob Griese's second-half passing performance in the game at Foxboro, Mass. At Baltimore, the Colts lost In other games Sunday, Buffalo edged the New York reach the Jets 14-10, Houston beat beats Buffalo Cleveland. 19-15, Philadelphia New England topped the New York Giants 7-14, Chicago defeated Green Bay 21-10, Seattle outlasted Kansas City 34-31, Denver downed San Diego 17-9 and Los Angeles beat Atlanta 23-7. Dallas hosts San Francisco Monday night.

Rams 23, Falcons 7 At Los Angeles, the Rams scored the most points against Atlanta in a single game this season and the victory gave Los Angeles the home field for the opening round of the playoffs. Pat Haden threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to John Cappelletti in the opening quarter and Sprinted 13 yards into the end zone on a keeper in the third period. The Rams, 10-3, also got a 145-yard rushing performance from Lawrence McCutcheon, who broke his own single-season club rushing record and Dick Bass' all-time Ram career rushing mark. Bills 14, Jets 10 At New York, Buffalo ended a four-game losing streak when Joe Ferguson threw his second touchdown pass to Bob Chandler, an 11-yarder, with just 40 seconds left. The Jets had taken a 10-7 lead on Richard Todd's 9-yard scoring pass to rookie Wesley Walker with 1:57 to play.

Oilers 19, Browns 15 At Cleveland, Billy Johnson returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown early in the third period to send Houston ahead 19-6. Ron Coleman.scored on a pair of short TD runs as, Houston improved its record to 7-6. The Browns, 6-7, lost five fumbles and four interceptions. Services set for Rupp LEXINGTON, Ky. Ukiahi cage girls score costly triumphs Ukiahi's Varsity basketball girls won all three games they were called upon to play Friday night, Saturday afternoon and night at Mendocino High School's Basketball Weekend, and thus the "championship." But at what price? The girls now play Clear Lake's strong team here at 5 p.m. tonight, then play Friday and Saturday at the Clear Lake Invitational Tournament minus at least two first-string players, Cindy Petersen and Teresa Bushby. Cindy was hurt 'in Friday night's lopsided, 69 to 47 victory over South Fork; while on Saturday Teresa suffered a knee injury in the final game.

Cindy is sidelined for a week or more with a bad ankle and Teresa's knee needs rest, if not more. Saturday afternoon the girls turned back the challenge of Ferndale, playing with three Walker girls who tallied 25 points between them, by a final 46 to 35 margin. Thomas announced today that tonight, when the 49ers host the Dallas Cowboys, has been declared "Jimmy Johnson Night At Candlestick Park" Thomas said the club plans to hold an official ceremony at halftime of the Monday night game at which Johnson's jersey No 37 will be permanently retired "in tribute to his 16 years as not only one of the greatest 49ers who ever played, but also one of the finest defensive backs ever to play in the NFL." Johnson retired prior to the 1977 season at age 38 after 16 seasons as a 49er starter, during which time he was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl five times, won the NFL's George Halas Award denoting courageous play in 1971 and won the 49ers' Len Eshmont Award twice, the first player ever to accomplish that feat. "Jimmy Johnson hag not only been a great football player," said Thomas. "He has been one of the game's finest citizens throughout his career. There is no one in the NFL who does not have the highest respect for him, both as a player and a man." Former 49er quarterback John Brodie, one of Johnson's closest friends, will handle the ceremony and Jimmy's brother, Rafer, the former Olympic decathlon champion, will also take part. Johnson was a San Francisco No.

1 draft choice from UCLA prior to the 1961 season, along with Billy Kilmer and Bernie Casey, and promptly broke into the 49er starting pre-season, Jimmy was asked to switch to wide receiver. He did, became an immediate starter, and wound up as the team's leading pass receiver with 34 catches for 627 yards. The following season, he was back in the defensive secondary as a starting cornerback, a job he retained and refined to near-perfection the remainder of his career. At retirement, Johnson held all the 49er career records for interceptions, in spite of the fact that, during most of his career, opposing quarterbacks were reluctant to test him and seldom threw passes in his direction. Prior to his outstanding career as a professional, Johnson, who was born in Dallas, but grew up in Kingsburg, Calif, had been an outstanding athlete at IJSLA, both as a football player and track man The retirement of Johnson's jersey bring to six the number of 49er jerseys retired in honor of former outstanding players.

He went 3 for 6 from the free throw line to halt a streak of 37 consecutive chanty tosses. He quipped that "if 1 had made those three, we would have had 100 points and our losing streak of games under 100 would still be going." Kansas City jumped off to a 13-0 lead and still led 54-42 at the half. If they aren't, from the time they tip-off Thursday night in the fourth opening night game against El Molino, and certainly from Friday through Saturday, they are likely to get blown off their own court! That, alas, was the case Saturday evening, or late- afternoon to be exact, at, Healdsburg when Montgomery's Vikings got little argument from Ukiah in the one-sided battle for fifth place. It was only for fifth, but personal and team pride should have caused the Cats to put up more of a struggle than they appeared to do in a game in which they made only 14 field goals, took just 36 shots from the field in a 64 to 47 loss! to often, or very accurately and it couldn't all be laid Montgomery defense. Where Ukiah moved the ball and shot the eyes out of the basket in the first half Friday at Tennyson to take a 55 point halftime total into the lockerroorri, Saturday the Cats scored just 14 field goals; a more respectable 19 of 27 from the foul line, but failed to hit even 50 points for the game.

Motgomery had 26 field goals and a lot more shots and points. Joe Hurlbut with six field goals and three free shots topped what scoring Ukiah had. Doug Daut scored eight points, Mark Levy eight, half from the foul line; Marty Murphy had four for four from the line; Craig Ulrich just four points; John Gulyas four; Pat Prine, three points; and Butch Hammell a free shot. El Molino might beat that total Thursday night! Ukiahi Jayvees lose Irish top Bruins By United Press International It usually isn't much of a surprise when a team ranked third nationally downs a fifth- ranked team, but when it happens at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion and in front nf a national television audience, there is some cause for comment. The score was 69-66 as No.

3 Notre Dame rose to the occasion for its sixth victory Ukiah's Jayvees landed Sid Maurer and Pat Fetzer on the Santa Rosa Junior Varsity Tournament All-Tourney basketball team, but dropped a 58-57 Consolation Finals game to San Rafael it had, and should have won! The Jayvees of Coach Bill Heath made just nine of 29 from the line, saw a later four- point lead vaporate, and just didn't have it when the final buzzer sounded. Fetzer had 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss; and Maurer, 13 points and 14 rebounds, but like the rest of the JV Cats couldn't get the big late free shots or field goals needed to frustrate a rallying Bulldog team. Brett Preston contributed eight assists and nine points; Greg Shear and Tom Wilson, eight points each, and Robert Hawkins two points. But a technical foul on Shear and a couple misses meant defeat, not victory. without a loss while handing the fifth-rated Bruins their first loss in five games.

Elsewhere among top ten teams, No. 1 Kentucky downed No. 15 Kansas, 73-66; second-ranked North Carolina crushed Rochester, 101-43; No. 4, Marquette defeated Florida. 81-67; sixth-ranked Arkansas downed Oklahoma, 64-53; No.

9 San Francisco beatCal State-Santa Barbara, 63-57; and tenthranked Syracuse beat St. Bonaventure, 107-81. Kansas was within two points of Kentucky at 66-64 with 1:36 left in the game but forward Ken Koenigs missed a pair of free throws and Kentucky then outscored Kansas 7-2 over the final 90 seconds. Kyle Macy scored 15 points and Mike Philips added 14 for the Wildcats. Insurance Agency THE UNBRELLA POLICY If you are a success in life, you may very well be the target of extraordinary demands in personal injury damages awarded by the courts.

For example, the $350,000 award to the parents of a child who drowned in a well-to-do contractor's pool. An award of $275,000 against a chain store executive in Texas resulting from personal injury in a car ac cident. The widow of an ex ecutive was granted $450,000 in damages against a business associate after her husband was killed in a company airplane Most liability policies wouldn't pay anywhere near those amounts But now there is the umbrel la policy which covers al most every risk under the sun for amounts between one and five It is inexpensive because it is in addition to your regular liability coverage. But if you happen to be success, you may find it's nice to have an umbrella for that rainy day.
