SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 12, 1991 THE GALVESTON DAILY NEWS 11-D National report Life goes on In Palm Beach 2nd Roxanne Pulitzer scandal unfolds Palm Beach, socialite Roxanne Pulitzer, almost 10 years after her sensational divorce, is testifying as "the other woman" in her boyfriend's custody fight. Associated Press PALM BEACH, Fla. Even though the Kennedy rape case has monopolized the headlines, another scandal involving Roxanne Pulitzer has unfolded here, as life in this dazzling but often naughty town goes on. As police issued an arrest warrant for William Kennedy Smith last week, Pulitzer returned to a familiar venue: The county courthouse where she is the "other woman" in a messy divorce and custody battle between her married boyfriend and a Canadian heiress. Pulitzer, 40, took the stand in defense of her latest love, 30-year-old French count and sometime race car driver Jean de la Moussaye.

She testified for three hours last week in a case involving accusations of cocaine and alcohol abuse, sex parties, bisexualisrn, physical abuse and suicide attempts. Over lunch at Hamburger Heaven on Friday, a favorite with the town's Old Guard, Pulitzer said she regrets the similarities to her divorce from publishing heir Herbert Pulitzer in 1982. "It's a very small town so people are talking about me in connection with this," she said, interrupting the conversation at times to blow kisses at friends. "Everyone knows everyone's business. But I think they see rne differently now.

They don't see me as a bimbo anymore." Bimbo or not, Pulitzer still has a knack for kttracting attention. During her testimony, she complained that her lover's wife has taught their daughter to "Everyone knows everyone's business. But I think they see me differently now. They don't see me as a bimbo anymore. Roxanne Pulitzer call her bad names.

"She has three names for me the slut, the whore, and Pulitzer testified. Attorney's for Francine de la Moussaye, 34, questioned Pulitzer about her nude photo session for Playboy, her admitted cocaine use in the late 1970s and her sexual history. Mrs. de La Moussaye said Friday that Pulitzer appeared in court to spite her. Mrs.

de La Moussaye called her husband a lousy race car driver whose philandering drove her to drink. "I was in such misery that whole marriage that I got smashed a few times, I couldn't help it," she said. "I was supporting the whole family on my trust fund and he was out cheating on me. Then he calls me an alcoholic." Talk of the the Pulitzer case has begun to circulate in the town's tony restaurants, beauty salons and posh boutiques. "People don't have anything to do here," said Pam Perry, the great-granddaughter of one of the founders of Miami Beach and a friend of Pulitzer.

"They don't work so they sit around and gossip all day. The gossip in this town is out of control." The start of summer is normally very slow for Palm Beachers. Even the local newspaper, The Palm Beach Post, does without a society columnist during the hot months when many flee to their summer homes in Newport, R.I., or Southampton, N. Y. If it weren't for the Kennedys and the Pulitzers, the only real news would be the annual three-week invasion of sea lice, which even keep the lifeguards away from the ocean.

"It seems like there's always some weird thing going on here," said Wahid Mahmood, 28, of Boca Raton, who was shopping with a friend on ritzy Worth Avenue. "First I see all the stuff about the Kennedys and now Roxanne's in the papers again." Pulitzer, who has written several books and does motivational lectures on divorce and custody battles, now speaks with the fervor of an evangelist. "I didn't want to even get into this," she said about the divorce trial of de la Moussaye, who is battling his wife for custody of their two children, ages 1 and 3. "I didn't want my kids to have to hear about their mother again. But I feel what I'm doing is right." Pulitzer lost custody of her twin sons, Mac and Zac, now 13, after her acrimonious split from her husband in 1982.

They live with their father and stepmother in Okeechobee. Roxanne Pulitzer said she makes the 90-minute trip to see them several times a week. But Pulitzer said it's tough to keep a low profile in Palm Beach. Michael Landon appears on 'Tonight' show Thursday Michael Landon jokes about cancer treatment on Johnny Carson show Associated Press BURBANK, Calif. Michael Landon, battling inoperable cancer, joked with talk show host Johnny Carson about his coffee enemas and said he felt good.

The former star of "Bonanza," "Little House on the Prairie" and "Highway to Heaven" was greeted with a standing ovation and wild cheering as he walked on stage during Thursday's taping of "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." Landon, 54, said he felt "very good" despite learning last month he has cancer of the liver and pancreas, which usually is fatal. The TV star said his treatment includes coffee enemas, a regimen he joked about with Carson, a longtime friend and neighbor. "You ever taken a coffee enema?" he asked the studio audience. When someone answered they had, he joked "You must be fun to have breakfast with." Pointing to Carson, Landon added, "I invited John over for a coffee enema. He wanted cream and sugar, and I'm not pouring." Since Landon's April 8 news conference announcing his diagnosis, he has stayed close to his Malibu ranch home.

Besieged by paparazzi and requests for interviews, Landon agreed to appear on the show because "You're my buddy" he told Carson. Landon said the outpouring of fan letters more than 50,000 overwhelms him. "I must tell everybody 'Thank he said. Besides coffee enemas, Landon's treatment includes chemotherapy, highly concentrated doses of vitamins and light exercise. "Mentality is more than 50 percent of your medicine," Landon said.

Carson said Landon had faced his cancer with "humor and honesty ahd a personal sense of dignity that characterizes the man." "If prayer helps at all, you've got the prayers of everybody in the nation," Carson added. COLLEGE OK THK MAINLAND TEXAS CITY, TEXAS Accrttiiltd by the Soutntrn Association of Callege.i and Scnooln 7th California condor hatches in Los Angeles Associated Press LOS ANGELES A California condor chick pecked out of its aqua-colored shell at the Los Angeles Zoo, the seventh condor hatching at the zoo this year, an official said Friday. The chick hatched Tuesday, after 58 days of incubation, said zoo bird curator Michael Wallace.

The chick's sex will be determined in three months. "The offspring is healthy and feeding well on minced mice," said Wallace. Two more eggs are incubating at the Los Angeles Zoo and two are expected to hatch this spring at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The two facilities currently house all 49 known California condors. Zoo officials plan to meet with geneticists in June to determine whether the 11 breeding pairs have enough genetically different young among them to release some of the vultures into the wild.

The last wild California condors were captured in 1987 in an effort to breed them in captivity and increase their numbers. At the time, the species had dwindled to just 27 birds as a result of poachers, pollution and the condor's consumption of hunters' lead shot.
