Hurricanes Come To Life, Trounce Tulane By BOB BALFE Post-Times Sports Editor MIAMI (AFN) The sleep-log giant of the pre season football polls awakened Friday night in the mud of a soaked Orange Bowl as the Miami Hurricanes trounced Tulane, 3414. Outscored 14-7 In the first half, the Miamians finally came to life with four touchdowns in the closing periods to get their first win after losses to Northwestern and Penn State. It was a miserable night for 27,510 drenched fans and for the tiring Tulane team, which faded badly in the stretch. But for the Hurricanes It was like the end of a rainbow. For the first time, Miami's running game clicked, despite the rain and mud, gaining 226 yards and another 117 passing fc 22 first downs, 14 of them in the second half.

Tulane outrushed the 'Canes with 229 yards, but collected only 27 by air. It was Dave Olive who pulled the Miamians Into the win column. He hit on half of 18 passes, and directed the running game with John Acuff and IVnce Opalsky pounding the Tulane line repeatedly as the Greenies weakend under barrage of SI running plays. Tulane was as relentless as the rain in the first half with a TD in each quarter. They marched 51 yards from the opening kickoff only to fumble at the 24, recovered by Ken Corbin for Miami.

But it was a shortlived chance. Miami losing 16 yards on a third down pass attempt, and with fourth and 24 failed to get a punt away. Tulane took the ball at the 10, sent Jim Tra-' han around right end for two and Chuck Loftin around the other end for one, then Bobby Duhon swept to his right, found a hole and cut through for the first score. Ewe Pontius kicked the 7th point. For the first time this season Miami's offense began to show promise.

Olivo hit three passes to Opalsky for 13, to Larry LaPoInt for and from the II hit Jim Cox la the end sone. Tulane stayed on the wet ground and tried only two passes in the first half but took the lead after a costly penalty opened the door. Miami's Rich Robinson intercepted at the 15 to stop Tulane but Olivo was called for inten-tlonaly grounding a pass, the ball being put on Miami's one. When Hank Collins tried to punt out the ball slipped off the side of his foot and went out of bounds on the 25, sotting up a Tulane field goal attempt which was wide. Then Olivo tried a screen pass, but defensive end Seolt Haber picked it off, returned yards to the eight, and Tulane failed In four plays to get It across.

They did better the next time, taking a Miami punt at the S3 and from the 27 Duhon ran a sweeper to his right to score. Pontius added the conversion. But the Hurricanes needed only a few minutes after the intermission to tie it up. Olivo hit LaPoint for 19 to the Tulane 31 and from the 28 sent Acuff through the right side on a trap play. He slipped away from two tacklers to score and Ray Harris kicked the points for a 14 11 deadlock.

Big Ted Hendricks pounced on a fumble by Tulane's Lof-tin at the 24 to set up the go-ahead TD late in the third period. Olivo passed to Acuff in the flat for 20 to the four. Opal-sky ran for two and Olivo car ried the final two. Harris' kick was wide. In eight minutes of the final period Miami added two more scores.

Olivo ran and passed 85 yards to the thtree, from where he passed to Cox for a TD, and moments later Bob Abbott intercepted a Warren liankston pass at the 42 and then ran it back for the final score.
