Venezuela fully recognizes the, great military strength of Great Uritain.

lint it is declared that her people are ready to see their homes and tlu-ir cities de-olalcd and laid in ashes rather than submit to what they regard as national dishonor. It is snid that the contention with Great Britain is not so much one of territory as of the Bcntiim-ut and honor involved. So firmly iiupro.s«u have the people hoeonie with" this Unit the opinion is expressed that they would rather sen their country tiu out of existence than pass into thoprac- tii-Jil control of a foreign power. l.ittl.- il.ml.t is felt under theso rircuni- Ktaiiccs thai will forcibly assert her rights to the disputed Orinoco terri- torvas soon as I i real Britain's rejection of settlement is definitely communicated. This territory extends -alioul loci miles along tin- roast, rtinuiiiK hack miles to what is known as the S-lumiliorg line.

Through the niiddle of this runs the Orinoco river, conducting commerce to the interior South America. Groat Uritain is already well intrenched there, with a naval station nt tho mouth of the river. The interest of the United States in tho controversy has pioyr.ssed steadily in recent days. It hcnan with tlie friendly RUgcestion through Mr. Bayard of a settlement and a request from congress that Groat Britain submit ho matter to arbitration.

The United States squadron, under Admiral Mea.le. was accorded an ovation at ports quite recently, and steps were taken to imemorate the Monroe doctrine hy erecting a statue to President at the capital of ene- zuela Within recent days Venezuela has granted large concessions of the Orinoco country to i-liizi-ns of tho United States. A strung liopi- seems to ho entertained on tlie part of Venezuela that the United States will not- stand idly hy if a resort to force is made. Itritain'i Keaiona. It is understood that the position of Great Uritain in Oil-lining the suggestion of the United-States for the scttlemont of the troul.l.-Vvith Venezuela is substantially as follows: Hritain takes tho position that the question of arbitration was onco baton- proposed hy Venezuela.

At that time the foreign office gave the subject careful consideration aud then submitted reply embodying a propositiou to arbitrate certain deliultf- subjects of controversy. To this proposition Venezuela has never inndo a reply, neither accepting nr rejecting the proposed Iwislsof arbitration Under tin-so circumstances it is not desirable to proceed to a second proposition of nrl.itration when the first remains un- linsworod. any event, there are certain portions of territory lo which Vcnrauela lays claim which under no circumstances will he made tho subject of arbitration, us thev are and established por tiolis of tlio lirit ish domain, and are not therefore a sul.j.-ct on which the judgment of arbitrators could be Invoked. subject matter is ono between Groat ISritaln and Venezuela, so that the good oflices of tho United States are nut regarded essential to a suttlr-- inent as it is understood that the United States has not assumed a protectorate over Venezuela or has other interest than that of a friendly power. The Eagle stocking factory of I. S. Furry Son, at Mverstown, which had successful operation for a number of years, shut down on April 1, and the plant will be sold or removed to Shamokin, where the firm has a much larger factory in successful operation. This throws out of employment about 45 funds who have to seek employment elsewhere as there is no other factory of the kind in tlie place. The scarcity of hands to operate the is one of the causes that led the linn to removal.

There is no such industry located in our city. Why will not some enterprising person or persons invest money in an enterprise of this kind. We feel confident that tlie necessary hands could be to build up a large business. Read New Commonwealth ad. Second page.
