She was a teacher and served in other capacities in Good Shepherd ministries in Carthage, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis and Detroit. She was instrumental in the planning and building of Pelletier Hall. She was superior of the Contemplative Community in Detroit for seven years.

9 at Villaspr- ings Health Care Center in Erlanger. She was a retired nursing assistant with the former St. Luke Hospital in Fort Thomas. She was a member of St. United Church of Christ in Newport.

Her husband, Charles Shay daughters, Donna Shay and Debbie Zelwesky; grandson, Christopher Shay; granddaughters, Christine and Carrie Shay; brother, Grover Riley and sister, Ollie McElhaney died reviously. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Stacey) Greenert; ons, Charles Shay, Jr. and Bruce Shay; brother, Fred (Dorothy) Riley; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Burial was at Evergreen emetery in Southgate. Memorials: Wood Hudson Cancer Research Lab, 931Isabel- la Newport, KY 41071.

Bernice Turner Bernice Turner, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Oct. 10 at Carmel Manor. She was a member of the First Church of God in Latonia and she enjoyed collecting dolls and crocheting. Survivors include her husband, Denver Turner; daughter, Beverly Taylor; and a grandson. Interment was at Forest Lawn emorial Park in Erlanger.

With many hiding on the islands trying to kill him, Ed Kerkhoff of Highland Heights built airstrips for B-29s to take off and land on bombing missions as part of the Seabees during World War II.

He risked his life on the South Pacific islands Tinian and Okinawa, right after the Marines gained control from the Japanese. In 1949 he married Mary Kerkhoff. They raised seven children several of whom still live in the area. On July 19 the family gathered at the Hof- brauhaus in Newport to celebrate 90th birthday. The celebration included his large extended family: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and more.
