Luther was born at Newark, Kendall County, 111., in 1845 and at present makes his home in Davenport, Iowa.

He is now in Concordia visiting Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hodgson, Mr. and Mrs. James Mr.

and Mrs. French. Mr. Luther enlisted in Company 141st Illinois Infantry on May 10, 1864, and was mustered out at Chicago on September 28, 1S64, when he went to Clinton, Iowa, later removing to Davenport. L.

R. BroWn, of Nebraska, who is here visiting his daughter, Mrs. Eugene Loomis, served in the civil war as a member of Company 8th Ohio of the third division of the 17th army corps, lie was one of the boys who shouldered the musket and went forth to do or die and has reasons to be proud of his record. Ijames, who is an ex-Confederate veteran, was born in Davie county, North Carolina, on May 4, 1S43, and came to Cloud County from Montezuma, Iowa, in April, 1S74, and now resides in Concordia, at 133 East 11th In August, 1SG2, Mr. Ijames enlisted in Company of the r.th Virginia Infantry, Pickett's Division, Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief. Mr. Ijames was taken prisoner at the battle of Gettysburg in July, 1SC3, and remained a prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland, until the end of the war.

Joshua Fisher is a resident of Concordia who thinks there is no better place on earth to live. He says he is "going to stay here as long as he is permitted to stay on earth." Mr. Fisher, who is an old soldier, was born on November 1, 1843, in Hamilton County, Indiana, and came to Cloud County on November 1, his birthday, 1879. He took a claim south of Concordia, living there ten years, and in 1SS9 moved to Concordia, and has lived here continuously ever since. At Indianapolis, on August 25, 1SG3, he enlisted in Company 8th Indiana Cavalry, and was discharged, after serving a year to the day, on August 23, 1SC4.

Mr. Fisher saw very active service. He was wounded on March 9, 1S64, at the battle of Ringgold, and was sent to the field hospital at Chatanooga, where it was found necessary to amputate his left foot. Mr. Norris Lewis Narcisse Chartier was born in County Baggot, Canada, on August 9, IS3S.

He removed to the United States, making his home in Wisconsin until 1S72, when he removed to a farm in Shirley Township, Cloud County, where he resided until September 1891, when he removed to Concordia, where he now resides at 203 State street. On March 28, 1864, he enlisted in Company 37th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, in Jefferson County, and on May 26, 1S64, was transferred to Company of the same regiment. In the assault on Petersburg, June 18, 1864, he was so severely wounded in the right ankle that the surgeons at the field hospital found it necessary to amputate the foot. The succeeding day Mr. Chartier was sent to the Finley Hospital at Washington, D.

and thence he was transferred to Madison, where he remained until June 26, 1S65, when he received an honorable discharge, on Kansas in 1871, removing later to Cloud County. Mr. Rice was born in Walworth County Wisconsin, in 1846, and on February 6, 1864, he enlisted in Company 12th Wisconsin Volunteers. After nearly two years of valiant service, he was mustered out on August 16, 1865. Charles A.

Wells was born in Henry County, Indiana, on December 4, 1842, and came to Cloud County on February 8, 1880, where he has since resided. His home at present is in Miltonvale. On July 15, 1863, he enlisted in Company 118 Indiana Volunteer Infantry, at Indianapolis, and after a year of service was discharged at Indianapolis on March 1, 1864. On October 1, 1864, he re-enlisted at Indianapolis, and after another year of service, was mustered out at Mobile, on September 30, 1865. Mr.

Wells is married, and has three children. John H. Ashley was born in Huron County, Ohio, on August 23, 1842, and came to Kansas in 1879, settling in Cloud County. On August 24, 1864, Mr. Ashley enlisted in Company of the 2d Michigan Cavalry, completed a term of eminently satisfactory service and was discharged at Nashville, on June 20, 1865.

George Robins was born near Hard-ensburg, Indiana, on May 18, 1843, and has been a resident of Cloud County for twenty-eight years, having come here on July 22, 18S4. He en account of disability. Mr. Chartier comes of a military family. His brother, Joseph, served in the civil war in the 16ih Wisconsin, and was killed in battle, and his father served as a nurse in the same regiment.

Both of his grandfathers served in the French army. His wife is a member of the W. R. C. Mr.

Chartier was married on March 10, 1858, at Watertown, Wisconsin, to Miss Mary Jane Perry. Mr. and Mrs. Chartier have five children, as follows: Lewis Narcisse, Charles Dunning, Edmond Edward, Perry Albert, and Ada Lilly Charlotte. One of those heroes who responded to the call of his country and went forth with his countrymen to do or die when the terrible struggle of the civil war began, was Lyman W.

Wilder who is now a resident of this county. Mr. Wilder was born in New York State on August 13, 1846, and came to Kansas in 1873, residing in the state continuously since that time. In 1900 he came to Cloud County to makes his home, and lives hero at the present time. On January 22, 1864, he enlisted in Company of the 8th Illinois Cavalry, and saw a year of hard service, being finally mustered out on August 17, 1865.

One of Concordia's veterans of the civil war who likes to recall the days of that terrible struggle, but who says he is certainly glad they are over, and hopes such days will never come again, is L. Rice, who came to listed at Hardensburg, Indiana, on December 24, 1863, served gallantly and creditably for two years, and was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 24, 1865. Mr. Robins now resides in Concordia. He is married and has three children, all of whom are married.

S. C. Wheeler was born in Greenfield, Huron County, Ohio, on February 1, 1846, and came to Cloud County, in 1879, and now is a resident of Concordia. Mr. Wheeler enlisted in the 191st Ohio Infantry on February 9, 1S65, and, while in the hospital at Cumberland, Maryland, received his discharge as the result of a general ordere issued on June 19, 1865.

Mr. Wheeler i sone of the prominent citizens of Concordia having served as state senator and mayor of our city and is always found at the front, working for the interests of Concordia and Cloud County. Franklin A. Stilson was born on January 23, 1842, at Sugargrcra, Warren County, and came to Kansas in 1871, settling in Sibley Township on May 7 of that year, making his home on the farm there continuously until he came with his family to Concordia in March 1897. Mr.

Stilson was averse to party with the old home farm, however, and still owns it. On November 7, 1861, he enlisted in Co. 111th Pennsylvania, and after seeing four years of service, was discharged on May 29, 1865, at Chatanooga, Mr. Stilson is mar-(Continued on Page 17).
