The Rosa Tusa Scholarship Tucker By Mary Ellen Flannery Palm Beach Post Staff Writer I During the past six years, Walteria Tucker has written hundreds of stories for her school newspaper, while juggling editor-in-chief duties this year, plus essays and reports for all her classes and she handed them all in neatly typed.

Her journalism teacher at Dreyfoos School of the Arts was stunned to learn Tucker doesn't have a home computer. Despite the huge amounts of writing she was required to do, she never complained, said teacher Sharon Hubbard. "I probably should not have been surprised that Walteria mastered journalism and desktop publishing without a computer," Hubbard wrote in Tucker's application for this year's Palm Beach Post Minority Scholarship. "Instead of attending a neighborhood school (in Belle Glade, 50 miles from Dreyfoos) where she could undoubtedly be the best with very little effort, she chose this school." Tucker, who is also an assistant editor for Dreyfoos' yearbook, won the $4,000 Post scholarship Wednesday night at the 2000 Pathfinder Scholarship Award ceremonies. She plans to use the money at Florida Atlantic University's Honor College and work at the Post this summer.

She was 77. Mrs. Graves immigrated to the United States from Croatia as a small child.

She began her writing career at 17 by winning a short-story contest sponsored by Mademoiselle. During World War II she served in the Army as a recruiter and public relations officer. She was a peace observer for the United Nations in Guatemala and president of the Palm Beach Community Action Council during the late 1960s and early '70s. Mrs. Graves was the society editor for The Palm Beach Post before starting her own newspaper, the Palm Beach Mirror.

Although at one time her paper competed with five other society publications, Mrs. Graves was proud to have cordial relationships with her competitors. Mrs. Graves is survived by her husband, Dr. Elwood Graves, former pastor of First Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach; her children, Stephen Graves of St.
